Ellis was issued for his death on 14 June 1899 at Binghamton, Broome Co., NY.2,12 Per The Robin NYE GEDCOM: Information obtained from Cousin Joyce Roberts French: 'a funeral item in the The Democratic Weekly Leader (Binghamton, NY) dated 22 Jun 1899 under the heading "Whitney's Point" reads: "Miss Carrie Ellis was buried at Riverside cemetery Friday [16 Jun 1899] afternoon."; a second Whitney's Point item reads "Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ellis of Lestershire were at the home of William Ellis from Friday until Sunday.8' Newspaper article on Carrie M. Roberts death from The Democratic Weekly Leader (Binghamton, NY) dated 22 Jun 1899, page 8:

"Tale of Suffering and Death

Former Wife of Policeman C.F. Roberts Killed Herself"

Miss Carrie Ellis of 9 Miles street, Lestershire, the divorced wife of Policeman Charles F. Roberts, died at her home Thursday at 9:15 o'clock from the effects of carbolic acid taken with suicidal intent. The woman's death agonies were frightful, her screams being plainly heard throughout the neighborhood. Despondency following the loss of her two little boys, Ray and Roy, who were given into the custody of the father at the time of the divorce, and failure properly to provide for herself, is believed to be the reason which led the woman to take her life. About a month ago she rented the house at No. 9 Miles street of Willis J. Chamberlain, who recently lost his wife. Her purpose was to open a boarding house, but her only guest was Mr. Chamberlain. Yesterday the woman was alone in the house, where she remained throughout the day. Late in the afternoon, about 4 o'clock, children of the neighborhood entered the house. They returned very shortly and hastened to inform a neighbor, Mrs. Smith, that Miss Ellis was lying on her bed up stairs, apparently ill. Mrs. Smith and other neighbors after looking at the prostrate form on the bed lost no time in sending for Dr. F. D. Gridley. When the physician arrived it was clear nothing could be done for her. She cried continually for water and suffered intense pain. An ounce and a half bottle, containing a few drops of carbolic acid and bearing a label of Cleves Drug company, Court street, was found. Near by was a cup partly filled with milk with which the poison had been mixed.
Previous to drinking the poison the woman wrote a letter addressed to her sister, Mrs. Kate Jackson, of Whitney's Point, and left it lying on the bureau. It was dated at 8 o'clock yesterday morning, which gives rise to the belief that the woman had lain on the bed for several hours before the children found her. In the letter she said that as soon as she finished writing she would drink carbolic acid and wrote that she told this in order to avert the necessity for an autopsy. She declared she had tried to make Mr. Roberts a good wife, and would have done so if he had let her. ' Could I be allowed to have one of my boys, or even to see them occasionally," she wrote, "I believe that I could keep up; but when even this comfort is taken from me, it seems as if nothing is left." She said she fully realized what she was doing and believed that her Maker would forgive her as she forgave those who had wronged her. The decedent was about 35 or 40 years old and is survived by her parents and a sister and brother, all living at Whitney's Point and another brother residing in Lestershire.''; [Article dated 22 June 1899].11 She was buried on 16 June 1899 at Riverside Cemetery, Whitney Point, Broome Co., NY.13,14,15
