Sioux County Herald

Orange City, Iowa
February 22, 1899

Sunday last was the 44th birthday of Alice A. Blood. She may never see another one.
On Nov. 16th 1898 at 7:30 o'clock a.m., at her home four miles northwest from Hull, Mrs. Blood fired two revolver shots into the back of the head of her husband resulting in his instant death. A coroner's jury was impaneled and reported, "we do further say that said homicide was premeditated and done in cold blood." The woman was arrested and admitted to bail by the examining magistrate in the sum of $5,000, which was promptly furnished. On Saturday last she came to the county seat accompanied by her mother, sister and daughter, and all are now at deputy sheriff Henry's awaiting the trial.
On that fatal day of Nov. 16th Mrs. Blood said to THE HERALD representative, "Oh, we've had an awful time for 22 years and I made up my mind to stop it. I got up this morning and prayed for strength." At that time she was tossing about upon her bed, scarcely a dozen feet from the dead body of her husband. At noon today THE HERALD representative greeted her again. She remembered him. As before when he saw her, so now she was lying in bed, this time dressed in a dark suit. There is little difference between her appearance today and that of Nov. 16. The head is rolled back and forth as if the bed tired her, but the eyes are clearer and not so prone to tears. There is a listless indifference to external affairs about her that is pitiful. The face is white and pinched and the little finger of her right hand is constantly moving to and fro. In reply to a question as to how she stood the trip last Saturday from Hull, Mrs. Blood replied, "pretty well; I didn't get much tired except it made my head ache here," -rubbing her forehead. "I want to get over with it" -speaking of her trial- "how are they getting along with that doctor? Yes, I think I am strong enough to go up there - I don't fear it - I haven't thought about it except that I want it over and then maybe I will feel better." Asked as to whether she feared the result of the trial Mrs. Blood said, "Oh, if they think I ought to be punished, I must stand it."
The trial will probably consume nearly the balance of the term. It is not expected that the selection of the jury can be completed before Friday morning. The case will be called immediately upon the conclusion of the Mosher case today.
