THE IRISH CENSUS FOR 1901 SHRAVOKEE

(SRAWICKEEN, COUNTY CLARE)


We know that the following Lane Families occupied land in the old Town Land of Shravokee at the time of the
Griffiths Valuation in 1855 for Srawickeen.

Thomas Lane (Moloney) - 38 Acres plus House & Office
Thomas Lane (Mulqueeny) - 33 Acres plus House & Office
James Lane  - 23 Acres plus House & Office

The adjacent Town Land of Garraun had the following families occupying land.
Griffiths Valuation in 1855 for Garraun

Patrick Lane & Michael Madden - 21 acres. Land only
John Malone - 18acres plus House & Office.

Working back from records we can trace the family of our grandfather Michael Lane b1838, who arrived in Australia and farmed at Koroit in Victoria, back to Shravokee to his Grandfather, Michael Lane b1788.

Michael Lane b1838 married Ellen Moloney.
Thomas Lane b1818 d1891 married Elizabeth Gleeson.
Michael Lane b1788 married Catherine Moloney.

We do know that a descendents of this Michael Lane b1788 (Noel Madden) still  farms at Shravokee on the property held by Thomas Lane /Moloney listed in the Griffiths Valuation.
DNA testing has proved our relationship to this Thomas Lane/Moloney line.

At the time of the 1901 Census in Ireland there were 6 families living in the Town Land of Shravokee (Srawickeen) of which 3 were Lane Families. The other families being those of John Madden, Patrick Cusack and Bridget Mulqueeny.

There is a headstone in the Lane Cemetery at Teampail which is adjacent to the 1855 Lane Farms listed in the Griffiths Valuation for Srawickeen.

It reads -:

ERECTED BY THOMAS, PATRICK & ANNE LANE
and their COUSIN
THOMAS LANE
in memory of
JAMES LANE
who departed this life
10th February 1855
aged 45 years

This headstone links the Lanes who held land in the Griffiths Valuation of 1855.

The two Thomas Lane's listed on the Headstone are believed to be cousins, Thomas Lane (Mulqueeny) and Thomas Lane (Moloney) who both occupied farms at Shravokee and Mt. O'Donnell at the time of the Griffiths Valuation of 1855.
The location names changed at the time of the Griffiths Valuation to Srawickeen.
The Patrick Lane listed is probably Pat Lane of Quinpool.


It should be noted that Patrick Lane and Michael Madden held land at Garraun, which is the Township adjacent to Shravokee.
Michael Madden of Quinpool married Margaret Malone of Shravokee in 1851.
Anne Lane who was the widow of James Lane, above, was a Malone from Shravokee and most likely a sister.

The holding of James Lane in the Griffiths Valuation of 1855 was previously held by Thomas Lane/Mulqueeny.
It is the property at Mt. O'Donnell at the time of the Tithe in 1824 and The Freeholders of 1829.

We believe that James Lane was a son of Thomas Lane (Mulqueeny).

The property which James Lane, who died  in 1855, held was, after probate, passed to his wife Anne Lane (Malone).

It is believed this is the farm listed as House 8 below in the 1901 Census for Srawickeen (Cappavilla, Clare) and at the time of the Tithe was noted as Mt. O'Donnell..


Margaret Lane & Mary Anne Lane who came to Australia and married the Gleeson Brothers were Grandchildren of James Lane & Anne Malone.
 

The Holdings of properties held by Thomas Lane/Moloney and Thomas Lane/Mulqueeny are referred to in The Tithe Applotment Records of 1824.
The index to Freeholders of 1829.
The Griffiths Valuation of 1855.

The use of the surname Moloney and Mulqueeny after the name Thomas Lane was we believe to differentiate between the two property holders.

By Using the Census 0f 1901 and 1911 we can show the families that descend from both Thomas Lane/Moloney and Thomas Lane/Mulqueeny.

 Thomas Lane / Moloney Descendent.

This property we believe is the original Thomas Lane (Moloney) property shown in The Tithe report 1824 and Griffiths Valuation 1855 and handed down to Thomas Lane b1839.
Descendents of the family, The Maddens, still farm it today.

Residents of a house 5 in Srawickeen (Cappavilla, Clare)

This is the Family of the Thomas Lane b1839, who married Mary Ward
of Castleconnell on 13th January, 1870.

He was the son of Thomas Lane b1818 and Elizabeth Gleeson and the Grandson of Michael Lane b1788 and Catherine Moloney from whom we are descended. He was a brother of our Michael Lane, b1838 who came to Australia.

The following children not listed in the census.
James Lane was born in 1877.
He died on 5th November, 1894 from TB aged 17 years.

Thomas Lane was born 13-1-1874
 


Note 1 -: The husband of Mary Lane, Thomas Lane died 23rd October, 1895 aged 56. from a Lung condition. (Hemoptysis)
                Death registration does say he died aged 45.
Probate was granted to his wife Mary Lane.

Note 2 -: Mary Lane is shown in the 1901 census as born in Co. Clare, but shown as born in Co.Tipperary in error in the 1911 census, as she came from Castleconnell, Co Limerick which is close to Shravokee .

Note 3 -: Mary Lane is shown in the 1911 census as being married 40 Years with 6 children, 4 still alive.
                They were shown as Residents of house 8 in Srawickeen (Cappavilla, Clare).
                Living with Mary at the time of the 1911 Census were John aged 29, Mary aged 27, Michael aged 25, William aged 23 and Margaret Moloney aged 72.

Note 4-: Mary Lane (Ward) the widow of Thomas Lane died at Shravokee in February, 1923 aged 80.
                The informant was her son John Lane of Shravokee.

Note 5 -: John Lane was baptised 4th April, 1879
                 He married Ellen McMahon on 13th February, 1923.
                 He died in 1934.

                Their daughter Patricia Lane b1926 married John Madden.
                Patricia Lane's brothers included Father Tom Lane and Father Michael Lane. 

Note 7 -: Willie Lane is listed in the !911 census as William Lane. He emigrated to the USA and he married Joanna Spaight in the USA..
                He was born 12th January, 1884.

Note 8 -: Michael Lane was born 12th November, 1881 and died 2nd August,1919, aged 37 of TB..
                He was a bachelor Farmer. His brother John Lane was the informant.

Note 8 -: Maggie Maloneys is listed in the 1911 census as Margaret Moloney, relative.
                She is shown as being blind in both census.
                She was a cousin of Thomas Lane b1818 and brought to Shravokee by his wife Elizabeth Gleeson..

Note 9 -: Mary Lane, the daughter, also known as Babe was born 8th May, 1875,  remained on the farm and died in 1947at the age of 71 years.

Note 10 -: Michael Lane, the son, was born 12th November, 1881 and died of consumption 2nd August, 1915.

In the1901 Census the house was a Class 2 house, brick construction, with a thatched roof, 4 rooms with 3 windows in the front.

The farm had a stable, a cow house, piggery and a barn.

The neighboring farms in 1901 were occupied by John Lane (1) (Dillon), John Madden (2), Pat Madden (3) land only, Patrick Cusack (4),  Mary Lane (5) (Ward), Patrick Lane (7) land only, Bridget Mulqueen (7) and Mary Anne Lane (8)( Keane).

 

In 1911 Census the Property was designated as House 7, which was larger and was a Class 2 house, brick construction, with an iron or slate roof, with 7 rooms and 5 windows in the front.
This was Shravokee House.

The farm in 1911 had a stable, a cow house, a calf house, a piggery, a boiling house and a barn.

The neighboring Farms in 1911 were occupied by Jeremiah Ryan (1), James Sullivan (2), John Madden (3), Bridget Mulqeen (4), Mary Anne Lane (Keane) (5), Daniel Madden (6),  Mary Lane (7) (Ward), and John Lane (8) (Dillon).  
 

Thomas Lane / Moloney Descendant.


This is the Family of Patrick Lane b1849 who married Mary Lynch 
of Ballvareen, Co Limerick on 13th May, 1869.

He was the son of Thomas Lane b1818 and Elizabeth Gleeson and the Grandson of Michael Lane b1788 and Catherine Moloney from whom we are descended.

He was a brother of our Michael Lane, b1838 who came to Australia.

He was also a brother of Thomas Lane b1839, of Shravokee, who married Mary Ward.

At the time of the 1901 Census Patrick Lane held land only at Shravokee and was living with his family in Limerick where he was operating as a butcher at 8 Roches Street.
Patrick Lane was to die as a result of an accident in the slaughter of cattle.

Residents of a house 8 in Roches Street (Shannon Ward No. 8 Limerick City, Limerick)

The 1901 Census shows Patrick Lane as born at Starvoice but the actual Census document shows this was transcribed incorrectly and it should read Shravokee.

Patrick Lane and Mary Lynch and their family at the time of the 1901 Census were living in a brick or stone house with an iron or slate roof. The house had 10 rooms with 4 windows in the front.

It also had a Slaughterhouse, a stable and 2 farmsteadings.

Mary Agnes shown in the Census was actually born Mary Martha on 13th March, 1878.
 
Agnes Lane married John Joseph Neville after she emigrated to Chicago.
It is believed she arrived in the USA on the ss. Caronia on the 16th October, 1907 and she was to meet a cousin Mrs. Kelly of Greenwood Avenue, Chicago.
John Joseph Neville was from Rathkeale, County Limerick and was born 16th July, 1885 as noted on his Draft Registration Card.

There were two children Dennis Lane b1912 who died during World War 2 on October 21, 1944 and John Vincent Neville b1913 who married Vivian Faulkner in 1937.
They had a son John Vincent Neville born 28th Sept, 1938
The 1930 Census for Chicago shows Agnes living with her two children and also her brother Michael Lane aged 49.


Michael Lane b1879 is shown on The Arrival List & The Ship's Manifest, Line 15, for the Saxonia which arrived in New York on the 10th October, 1911. the list shows Michael Lane, aged 27, laborer,
It shows his nearest relative as his sister Kathleen Coleman of Limerick.
It further shows he was to meet his sister Agnes Neville of Chicago.
Michael Lane lived with his sister for many years according to the Census in 1920 and 1940. He did not marry.
At some stage Michael Joseph Lane returned home to Ireland as the attached Report on the Death of an American Citizen shows he died aged 79, 19th March, 1955, at the home of his sister Catherine (Kathleen) Coleman.
Other known relatives listed was a nephew - Vincent Neville of Indianapolis, USA & a niece Angela Lane of Lisburn, Northern Ireland. 

Catherine (Kathleen) Lane was baptised 18th Ocober, 1871 and lived at 4 Killuran Terrace, Catherine Street, Limerick.
She married John Coleman who was a widower on 19th January, 1911.   
 She died in 1958. 
She is listed as Kathleen Coleman, married, in the 1911 Census for Limerick
She supplied most of the early information re the various Lane Families to Father Michael & Father Thomas Lane.. 
She had no family but one of her brother Tom's children, Joe, lived with her.
He worked at Boyds of William Street up to about 1956. ( Joe had a sister Angela).

Tom (Thomas) Lane was born 19th July, 1870 and baptised on July 20th,1870 and was not shown in the 1901 Census as he was married to Gretta Lyons.

It appears from the Census that he was Thomas J Lane, a butcher, aged 29, from Ballyvareen, when he married on the 26th June, 1900, Gretta Lyons, whose address was  4 Barrington Street, Limerick.
He stated his father was Patrick Lane.

At the time of the 1901 Census they were living at 4 Barrington Street, Limerick with 3 Boarders.
Tom, aged 28, was described as a Horse Dealer and Gretta, aged 25 was a House Keeper

Tom and Gretta appear in the 1911 census living at 9 Henry Street, Limerick which was a 10 room Class 1 Private Dwelling.

A daughter Mary Josephine Lane died on the 26th October, 1902 and she was described as a Book Keepers daughter.
The informant was Gretta Lane.

 Thomas Lane / Mulqueeny Descendant.

This property we believe is the original Thomas Lane (Mulqueeny) property shown in The Tithe report 1824 and The Freeholders Registry of 1829 as located in Mt. O'Donnell and in the Griffiths Valuation 1855 shown as Srawickeen (Shravokee) and handed down to James Lane Lane b1810.
At the time of the Griffiths Valuation in 1855 it was occupied by James Lane who married Anne Malone in
 

James Lane b1810 & Ann Malone had at least 4 Children.

IRISH CENSUS 1901
Residents of a house 8 in Srawickeen (Cappavilla, Clare)

This is the Family of Patrick Lane b1849 who married Mary Anne Kean

 Patrick Lane who married Mary Anne Kean on 15th February 1873 at Doonass would have inherited the property of James Lane & Ann Malone.
Witnesses at their wedding were John Madden & Mary McNamara.

Patrick Lane died July 10th, 1885 of a Gastric Ulcer.
His Brother in Law, John Madden, was the informant.

The 1901 census showed the following family members -:

Mary Anne stated in the 1911 census she had 7 children all of whom were still living although only 5 were living with her at the time of the 1901 census.
Mary Anne (Anne) Lane died 9th January, 1925. Probate was granted to Patrick Lane.

Their son John Lane b16th July,1875 was not included in the census. He would have been 26 years old at the time of the census.
Their son Thomas Lane b3rd December, 1876 was not included in the census. He would have been 25 years at the time of the Census.
 
Of the children James (Jim), Mary and Anne (Annie) did not marry and remained on the farm at Shravokee for many years.

Annie Lane died on the 31st January, 1953. Memorial card.
She was born 1st November, 1878.

Mary Lane was born 14th September,1882. She died on the 9th February, 1953. Memorial card. 

By the time of the 1911 census Margaret had left for the USA & Bridget (Delia) immigrated to the USA not long after.

Bridget (Delia) was shown as 23 years old at the time of the 1911 census.
She was born 21st October, 1884.
She was a passenger on the ssCedric which arrived in New York on 26th October, 1912, aged 24 and stated her mother was Mary Lane from Shravokee, Clonlara, County Clare and she was going to meet her sister Maggie Lane (Margaret) in Brooklyn.

Margaret and Delia both married in the USA.

Margaret Lane married Martin Madden. Margaret Lane was baptised in 1880.
She was born 25th September, 1880.

He was baptised Nov 5th, 1868.

Delia Lane married a Dan Clancy. They did not have any family.

Delia's address in the USA was 31 Sterling Place, Brooklyn 17, New York.

Margaret's address was 245-12 Newhall Ave. Rosedale, New York.
 
Margaret's obituary notice was in the Long Island Press on 17th December, 1966 and read -:
Margaret Madden (nee Lane) on December 16th, 1966. Beloved wife of the late Martin, devoted mother of Martin J. and James P. loving sister of Mrs. Delia Clancy also survived by four grandchildren. Reposing at Rosedale Funeral Home 245-01 Francis Lewis Boulevard (at Sunrise Highway), Rosedale, LI. Solemn requiem mass Monday, 9.45am. St. Pius X. RC. Church. Internment Holy Cross Cemetery.
Family will receive friends 2-5pm and 7-10pm.

According to her Death Certificate she had resided in New York for 60 years.

Interred in Plot No. 93-95 with Margaret are -: 
Martin Madden d.26th September, 1945, aged 75.
Daniel P. Clancy d.24 November, 1954 aged 63.
Bridget Clancy d.9 December, 1972 aged 88.
Catherine Madden d. 21 February, 1991 aged 68.

The farm had a stable, a cow house, piggery and a barn.
