Edward Barnes

Edward Barnes

- Mary Brooker

Edward Barnes was born in NSW in 1816 to convict Richard Barnes and Mary Whitton, daughter of Edward Whitton and Anne Slater.
He married Mary Brooker in South Australia and the family moved to Victoria in the middle of the 19
th Century.

Whilst he was born in NSW the son of a convict it appears he kept this from his family.

Edward Barnes was born August 11th, 1816 at  Campbelltown, NSW. the eldest son of Richard Barnes and Mary Whitton.

On December 12th, 1840, aged 24, he married Mary Brooker  the daughter of Michael and Hannah Brooker which was almost 12 months after the Brooker family arrived in South Australia.

Their marriage certificate states -:

Edward Barns, bachelor of  Gawler and late of the Parish of Portsmouth, England, and Mary Brooker, Spinster of   Thebarton, and late of the Parish of  Hackfield, Sussex, England were married in this Church by Banns this twelfth day of December in the Year One Thousand eight hundred and forty.

By me Chas. B. Howard. Col. Chap.

Edward signed the Certificate and Mary used an X as her mark. Witnesses were William Best and Mary's sister Martha Brooker who also used an "X" as her mark. William Best and Martha Brooker were to marry six days later.

There is no record of Edward arriving into South Australia from overseas so it must be assumed he traveled overland from New South Wales and that he perhaps did not want people to be aware of his parents convict origins which was a common deception in those days. His death certificate suggests he was 19 years old when he arrived in South Australia.

After the marriage, Edward and Mary settled at  Gawler where their first child Mary was born on March 25th, 1842. She was  baptised in Adelaide on December 29th, 1842 at which time Edward stated he was a carpenter and still living at Gawler.

Their second child Jane was born in 1843, however no registration of the birth can be located.

Between 1851 and 1860 the family moved to Victoria settling at Penshurst where in the 1863 rate book Edward is listed as a carpenter and the owner of a weatherboard hut on an 1/2 acre allotment. He is shown as owning or leasing various houses or small farming properties at Penshurst or Yalimba up to 1880.

Edward and Mary Barnes had a total of 10 children and all of them with the exception of Anne and Emma had the same names as Edwards’s brothers and sisters and stepbrothers and step -sisters.
With the exception of their daughters Mary and Emma Isabella, it appears none of the other children's births were registered.
Searchs have been carried out in SA, NSW, and Victoria without success.

An interesting entry in the rate book shows that Edward Barnes in 1872 and 1873 leased 4 acre and 16 acre paddocks from James Staunton who was the brother of Myles Staunton, who is a relative on the Lane Side of the family, and who is mentioned in the Warrong Tragedies.

Edward Barnes died on April 10th, 1880 and the informant is shown as Francis Dodds, son-in-law and Saddler of Penshurst.

His death certificate states that his father was Richard Barnes, Captain in the Navy, and his mother was Mary Barnes, formerly Whitton. It would appear that Edward Barnes kept from his family that his father came out to NSW as a convict, however the certificate does state he was born in Campbelltown, New South Wales and that he spent 19 years there, 20 years in Adelaide, South Australia and 20 years in Victoria.
This suggests arrival in Victoria about 1860.

Edward Barnes was buried on April 12th, 1880 at Boram Boram Cemetery, Penshurst.

Mary Barnes and her son Richard both appear in the rate books for various properties, Mary up until 1891 and Richard under the occupations of Carpenter, Registrar of Births or as a Grazier up until at least 1910. There was also a John Barnes listed in 1882.

Mary Barnes died on June 22nd, 1892, aged 72 of cancer. The informant was her son-in-law Patrick Duncan Baxter who incorrectly stated her parents were John and Mary Brooker and possibly was not aware that her parents were Michael and Hannah Brooker. Mary’s mother Hannah had died in Collingwood the previous year, aged 91.

The certificate showed that Mary was born in Sussex where she lived for about 19 years and that she lived in South Australia for 14 years and Victoria for 39 years.
This would suggest arrival in Victoria about 1852.
At the time of her death, her son Richard was Registrar for Births, Deaths and Marriages in the District of Penshurst.
The only children alive at the time of her death were Mary, Richard, John and Emma.

Mary was buried at Boram Boram Cemetery, Penshurst on June 24th, 1892.

The local Hamilton Spectator reported on Thursday, June 30th, 1892 -:

"Since I last wrote you another old identity of Penshurst has passed to the great majority. Mrs. Barnes, mother of Mr. R. Barnes, register of Births etc. for the area was the mother of a large family and was highly respected by all who knew her. Well advanced in years the immediate cause of her death was cancer. Her funeral was well attended not withstanding the inclemency of the weather."
