MAIN FAMILY SURNAMES

FAMILY PAGECOMMENT
Banks
The Banks family are connected to my wife's family of Crowe through the first marriage of her father Eric Louis Crowe in Canada in 1920. The family were based in Longbridge Hayes, Staffordshire, England where John Charles Banks kept a Public House at 1 Peel Street. They emigrated to Canada after 1904 and settled eventually in Victoria, British Columbia. John died in 1920 but Mary Ann his wife survived until 1950 still living in Victoria, BC.
Bishop
The Bishop family are connected to me by marriage into the Simmons family in 1813 when Hannah Bishop (1789-1879) married William Simmons (1788-1858). George Bishop was my 5G Grandfather. There are still Bishops living in the village of Priddy.
Chell
At the moment I can trace my branch of the Chell family back to 1784 and I have found that they originated in Fritchley, Derbyshire. However the information regarding the Chell family is increasing all the time with snippets of infomation from one source leading to fresh discoveries. For instance since publishing the original Chell family page in April 2001 I have received a copy of Edward Chell's obituary (available from the Chell family page) which caused me to modify my original findings. Also the 1891 census for Norfolk pointed me to a Sarah Chell in Bolton.
Acknowledgements: I am indebted to Alan S Flint, webmaster of the Crich Village Pages from which I have used for some of my pre-1881 information. Information given to me by Margaret Patton has contributed most of the information about Edward's family. Selina Chell's family was found with the help of Stephen Chapman . Another source of information is Jaqueline Bushell of Sussex who gives me snippets of information as she discovers them whilst researching her own branch of the family. Now (June 2002) I have been contacted by Kim Rogers (Jaqueline's sister) and also Betty Shillingford who corrected my assumptions regarding the origins of Mary Ann Pearson, Thomas Chell's wife
Crowe
My wifes family always thought that there were relatives of her father's (Eric Louis Crowe) somewhere in North America. At last after many years we made contact with her cousin Margaret Crowe (Grove) and alos discovered some surprises. Thanks are due to Ray and Margaret (Crowe) Grove who supplied me with a book they had compiled about the family which filled in many details enabling me to complete this family page. I can do no better than quote from their book regarding the origins of the Crowe Family.
"... Our search for the origin of the CROWE family ended with the birth of the first family member in Ireland and based on his place of birth and the family history of military service it is possible that [he was not an only child]. Proof of this still eludes us but it is logical to assume that Timothy was the son of a serving soldier stationed in Ireland so his parents could have been [from elswhere in the British Isles]..."
Dobson
I am only in the early stages of researching the Dobson family. Because Arthur and Alfred were common forenames in the late 1800's I am awaiting more definite information before I can go any further.
Fowell
The Fowell family came to my notice because Sarah Fowell married Edward Chell my Gt Gt Uncle. However other Fowells were discovered through Edward Chell's obituary and I carried on from there using the census to add to my information.
Some of my information was incorrect and I must thank Richard Green and his Fowell Family Pages for putting me back on the 'straight and narrow'. His pages cover the Fowell family in greater detail than I have together with the connection with other Norfolk families. He also includes an insight into the Traction Engine businesses in Thetford.
Goff
The information that I have about my Goff line is sparse at the present. I know that my GtGt Grandfather was born in Pontefract, Yorkshire and that he moved to Christchurch, Hampshire where he married and had three children. My Gt Grandfather was the only one of the three to move to London where my Grandfather was born in Bethnal Green, my Father in Marylebone and me, because of WW2, in Stafford. One of my Gt Gt Uncles (John) stayed in Purwell a village near Christchurch, where he was brought up and was still there in the 1881 census. My other Gt Gt Uncle (George) had a son George Henry in Christchurch in 1870 but the family does not appear in the 1881 census. Did they emigrate??
Goodwin
The Goodwin family started out as Goodings but the name changed to Goodwin either through design or misspelling at some time in the mid 1700's. Thomas Gooding was my 5G Grandfather on my maternal grandmothers side. This branch of the family was researched by my cousin Diana Freeman who gave me her results for which I am grateful.

Charles Haughey and Timothy Crowe, my wife's GtGt Grandfather, were both in the same Regiment in Ireland. Charles' daughter married Timothy. Both the Haughey and the Crowe families had a military background both being posted to India in the mid 1800's before returning to retirement in England.
Langdon
My second name results from the marriage of Elizabeth Langdon to my Gt Grandfather Charles Goff. The Rankin name supposedly originated in Flanders during the twelfth century. Although the family came to America in 1750 the family's connection with our Crowe family was through marriage in 1925. Robert Rankin was involved in the setting up of Johnson County, MO and was one of the first justices of the county court.<
