Flintlock Rifle of "Lick Creek" Stephen Langford

Stephen Langford, 1788-1852, Gunsmith, Blacksmith and Grist Mill owner, made this Flintlock Rifle in his blacksmith shop on the Rockcastle River in Laurel County, Ky. It was dated circa 1830 by Shelby Gallien, one of the foremost authorities on Kentucky Long Rifles. The stock is Curly Maple. The dog's head originally had silver teeth and a gold chain around it's neck.

. Grandpa Benjamin Langford's Flintlock rifle.

Grandpa John Will called it a hog rifle. This rifle has seen some use. It has been shot so many times that the barrel split and had to be sawed off about 6 inches at the rear, where the explosion takes place. As a matter of fact, it may be the rifle he carried in the Civil War.
