The purpose of this section is to list some of the events that occurred during the older generations of Langford/Lankford families in the North Carolina region. Elizabeth Langford is the earliest Langford/Lankford that Poldi has found in North Carolina to date. Bath County was absorbed into other counties and records disbursed.

In the name of God amen, I, James Lankford of the county of Surry and Province of North Carolina, finding myself very sick and weak in body at present, but of perfect mind, and memory, thanks be to almighty God for it, calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, I do appoint this my last will and testament, and of the things that it hath been pleased God to indue me  with temporarily, I give and bequeath after the following manner:    First I give my soul to Almighty God who gave it to me, and as for my body, I give to the Earth from whence it came, to be buried in a Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors.
An as for my personal estate, I dispose of it after the following manner; First, I give and bequeath to my loving son James Lankford, my land that I now live on lying on the North side of Dan River in the aforesaid county and province which I do entitle him with to a certain branch running into the aforesaid river at the upper end of my plantation.  Second, I give to my loving daughter Susannah Dickes all my land extending up the river from the aforesaid branch Third, Of my moveable estate, I give and bequeath to my dear and loving wife Sarah Lankford to dispose of as she shall think proper. Fourth, That my loving son William Lankford shall have free liberty to live on the aforesaid land during his lifetime if he shall think proper.  In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of October in the year of our Lord 1772. Witnesses present: Joseph Cloud, Jr, John Henderson, and John Lankford.  This will was proven in 1778 in Surry Co NC

It would appear that Granville County, NC is our weakest area of information.  I will need to figure out how to get more data for these area Langford's.

The Deeds for Bute County, NC are loaded with the families of Surry and Lunenburg counties Virginia. It reads as a virtual who migrate where.  Note that there was a Langford/Williams marriage. What relationship was Catherine Williams to these Williams men in land transactions with Langford's? We will need to find Wills for the Williams in the chance they mention Catherine and her relationship to them.

I know that in my particular case, the Lunenburg County, VA to Bute and Warren County, NC are especially important.  Bute County didn't house my Langford/Lankford ancestors for very long before I find them in Warren County, NC.

I have noticed that Isle of Wight County, VA fell under the religious Parish of Newport Parish.  Researching these Parish records would in all certainty contain even further information on these Lankford's.

"John Martin and Thomas Lankford of Captain Joseph Cloud's company, of Cleveland's regiment, while out spying, were waylaid near Broad river, by a party in ambush, who fired at them, severely wounding Martin in the the head. Lankford escaped unhurt. The shot had penetrated through the skin of his temples, and John Deatheridge succeeded in picking them all out of the the wound."
