Elizabeth, after being widowed, and at least 7 of her children moved into NW Arkansas during the early 1840s. But for the artificial geographical boundaries of man they would have settled initally in Carroll County, Arkansas, instead the area they settled had been removed to help form Madison County. The Berry family for the most part settled in Township 17, Range 25, of Madison County. Hugh Berry resided in Section 14; Thomas D Berry, chose Section 20, as did his brother, William Martin Berry; and John Berry settled in Section 28, Township 18, Range 25.2

Thomas Berry married Elizabeth Martin Mc Ferron on 4-18-1799. The marriage was performed by Charles Cummings, the Presbyterian minister who figured so prominently in early Washington Co. history. The record was found on p. 4 of D. E. Brown's book, "Marriages of Washington Co., Virginia" Their first 2 children were born in Virginia. Then, during 1803, the Berrys, like so many of their peers, heeded the siren call to move west. Words that were used in a Berry family history to describe those Americans who moved into Tennessee could well be used to describe a future generation who would bring civilization into Carroll County, AR. "Dominant among the immigrants settling the over-the-mountain country were the Scotch-Irish, defiant and aggressive, who seldom neglected an opportunity to better themselves. They had undying confidence in their manhood, were as bold as Romans, and as Indian fighters won even the Shawnee's admiration. They were Presbyterians, though in the wilderness many turned Baptist or Methodist. They believed in freedom and equality, resented class distinction and the leisurely life. They preferred the useful to the beautiful and even required the beautiful to be useful." The land upon which the Berry family settled in Rutherford County, TN came to them through a land grant from one John Hartley, who was a veteran of the American Revolution, and Thomas Berry became his assignee. As such, Berry received one hundred acres of land on Cripple Creek, about eight miles east of Murfreesboro. Thomas Berry saw military action during the War of 1812, as a wagon master. His widow would receive another land grant in Jackson County, AL because of his military service. About 1824, the Berry family returned to the eastern part of the US, settling this time in Jackson County, AL. It was here that Thomas died. He had sired 11 children.
