1773 William Lankshear - son of William and Peggy

Comments from Jane C Aug 2003

William Lankshear, a surgeon, married Peggy (or Margaret) Batt in 1773 at Witney; Peggy was from a well-known family of Witney surgeons. According to announcements in a newspaper called "Jackson's Oxford Journal", William died in Chelsea in 1817 aged 65; Peggy died the next year and was buried at Witney.

That Peggy Lankshear burial has been niggling at me so I had a look on a BATT family tree which comes from a book about the Batt family. It has the following on Peggy: Peggy was the daughter of Augustine Batt (apothecary) and was baptised at Witney 18 Dec 1743; married William Lankshear at Witney 21 June 1773; mentioned in her father's will made 1778; buried at Witney 5 January 1818 aged 74. I haven't checked the details against the original registers, but if she is mentioned in her father's will 1778 then she can't be the one buried at Witney in 1776. So maybe the NBI entry is incorrect. Perhaps William & Peggy had a daughter Peggy who was died young? I will check next time I'm in Witney library to see what the register says.

Another little discrepancy is that William, son of William & Peggy, who was baptised 16 Sept 1773*, must have died soon afterwards as he was buried on 29 Oct 1773* at Witney. I guess that William and Peggy had more children after this, including another William. They apparently were still in Witney according to the 1790s trade directory entry you've found, but apparently not getting their children christened at the parish church. What is possible is that they became non-conformists and started going to one of several non-conformist chapels in Witney (Independents/Congregationalists, Methodists, Quakers). The Independent chapel was in the lane where John Lankshear lived and was established by 1712, I think, but there are no baptism records from before about 1800 unfortunately.

Since William Lankshear the surgeon died at Chelsea according to the newspaper announcement I mentioned before, it seems very likely that he is connected to the Edward Lankshear who had children christened in Chelsea. My hunch is that Edward was the son of William and Peggy, and may well have been named after Peggy's brother Edward Batt, a surgeon. Perhaps Edward Batt and William Lankshear even worked together? (Ron was wondering if Edward was son of John and Elizabeth as Frances also married in same place)
