"My
grandfather's brother was Philip Veness Rider born in Kensington, London in
1876. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1895, having committed a misdemeanor and
settled in Wellington.
It is known that he married a Minnie Lankshear in 1917.
Wellington Electoral Roll - Philip and Minnie Rider 1919
It would appear that they were divorced.
Philip died aged 63 in 1939 intestate. He was buried at Karori.
In 1931 a Minnie Rider married a Charles Redman Woolcot. He died in 1959. Minnie
in 1978. That is about all I know. I
would love to know if Philip and Minnie Rider had any children.
From Ann"
Philip was the second son of Thomas Philip and Isabella Rider. Born at Lancaster Road, Netting Hill in 1876, he was one of his mother's favourite sons. Much to the displeasure of his father he failed his exams and emigrated to New Zealand in 1895 causing much distress to his poor mother.
Nothing more was heard of him. In 1909 his father, Thomas Philip, died and his Will reveals how upset his father was. He left Philip a legacy of 50. a year for life but also added 'I desire to censure him for his gross ingratitude in not having written to me for the last ten years".

We take the following from a Home (UK) paper - Philip Vaness Rider, son of an
estate agent at Notting Hill was articled to a solicitor. Tempted by betting
men, he robbed his father of 66 pounds, ran away and was arrested at Cambridge.
Brought before a magistrate he was released on his father promising to send him
to New Zealand
see also Philip Rider who married Minnie Lankshear mentioned re being missing from UK and several other of the so called black sheep of the family...

1917 military call up: First reserves. Philip RIDER of 176 Thornton Quay,
Wellington. Occupation - Driver.
I am not sure if this is him - not the address of 1919 electoral roll perhaps
agrees with marriage. Rolls show him as tram conductor so driver perhaps....
Records found by Ron and confirming above.
Only child found looks like died as infant
Appears to be only one child
1917/3630 Rider Phyllis to Minnie and Philip Veness but alas Death 1917/5487 Rider Phyllis 5H
The NZ BMD site does not allow birth searches within one hundred years so could
not check that but no one appears with Minnie on Electoral Rolls when they might
be old enough.

Maurice Desmond Woolcott 19321934 Birth 1932 Wellington, New Zealand Death 29 JUL 1934 Wellington, New Zealand
But from Electoral Rolls there looks like a Barry Redman Woolcott who is in 1957 rolls so perhaps born 1936 and married an Alma Gladys unknown c1960 and they may have a daughter Linda
