Anacortes Lodge of Elks, 1204, conducted the final rites for Fred R. Bullock who passed away last Saturday at 7:15 p. m. at his home 16th and D avenue.

The funeral was held Wednesday at 1 o'clock from Haugen Funeral Home, with officers, of the lodge officiating. Mrs. Arthur Burgett and R. B. Lowman, accompanied by Glen Bliss, sang. Pallbearers were Andy Kvelland, William Blankenship, Ross Sparks, A. E. Schreiber, Roy Snyder, Joe Davis, and Nick Bessner. Cremation was made in Washelli.

Mr. Bullock was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, December 15, 1866. He came to Anacortes in 1899 and has lived in this community for 37 years. At one time he served as police judge, later he was a steam boat engineer, and for many years was machinist at Carroll's Cannery.

Until about a year and a half ago, Mr. Bullock served the previous four years as secretary of the Elks Lodge here. For the past year he has been failing in health. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Marion L. Bullock; one daughter, Mrs. Frank Kimsey of Anacortes and one son, Frank Bullock, of Berkeley, California.

Mrs. Clara M. Carpenter, wife of C. F. Carpenter, of 1253 East Morrison Street, died last Sunday at the home of her sister, Mrs. Clarence J. Wheeler, 657 Broadway. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Portland Crematorium.

Mrs. Carpenter was born in Chicago and was the daughter of the late Captain Edward Martin, a veteran of the Civil War. She came to Oregon with her father, sister and brother 40 years ago and made her home in this city until her death.

Mrs. Carpenter was active in Red Cross and was a member of Martha Washington Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.

Edward Martin, a well-known Portland resident, died at 6 o'clock yesterday morning at his residence, 1170 Ivon street, after a long illness. Cancer was the cause of his death. He was born March 13, 1831, in Philadelphia, where he resided until 1854, after which he removed to Chicago. In 1861 he enlisted as a private in Company E. Fifty-seventh Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and rose to the rank of First Lieutenant. After the war Lieutenant Martin engaged in the business of stair-building in Chicago until 1877, when he came to Portland. He had resided here continuously since that time, being engaged in stair-building and also sash and door manufacturing under the firm name of E. & J. A. Martin. He retired 10 years ago from active business.

Mr. Martin was a member of Washington lodge, A. F. and A. M.; Sumner Post, G. A. R., and A. O. U. W. He is survived by a widow and four children by his first wife: Edward E. Martin, Mrs. C. I. Carpenter and Mrs. C. J. Wheeler, of Portland, and Mrs. F. R. Bullock, of Anacortes, Wash.

The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Dunning's chapel, East Sixth and East Alder streets.

Edward Everett Martin, Oregonian 22 May 1944

Edward E. Martin, one of the oldest members of the Multnomah Typographical union and veteran Portland newspaperman, died Saturday at The Dalles hospital following an illness of several months. He was 82.

Born in New York City April 17, 1862, Mr. Martin came to Portland in 1877 and that year began his career as a route carrier for the old Evening Telegram. The first issue of the paper, which he delivered, was published the day before his 15th birthday. He applied for membership in the typographers' union in 1884 and was a continuous member since. He was known to other members of the union as "one of the best make up men in the business." He retired about 15 years ago. The family was at 1831 NE Broadway.

J. P. Finley & Son are in charge of funeral arrangements.

Mr. Martin is survived by a son, Dr. Walter I. Martin, Seaside, and a sister, Mrs. C. J. Wheeler, 1801 NE Broadway, Portland. Two grandchildren also survive.

Frances Selena Martin Wheeler, a resident of Portland for 70 years, died Thursday night in her home at 1801 N. E. Broadway, which she had occupied for the last 58 years. The funeral will be Monday at 1 p. M. in the Morninglight chapel of J. P. Finley & Son. Born in Chicago March 4, 1867, she was married in Portland October 18, 1888, to the late Clarence J. Wheeler. Surviving relatives include two sons, Chester A. Wheeler and Dr. Collister Wheeler of Portland, four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
