The Door County Advocate notes that he was searching for a Christmas tree for the church in back of the Fountain cottage in Riley's Bay. He was accompanied by his brother's in law, William and Herbert Lenius. He took his shotgun with him to hunt for rabbits while he searched for the tree. After finding one and cutting the tree, he put the axe under his arm and started to pull the tree. He grabbed the gun by the barrel and it discharged, hitting him in the head and killing him instantly. The shot was heard by Peter May, who investigated and found him dead. The brothers called the District Attorney and the undertaker who removed his body.
