GROOM OF ONE WEEK DROWNS AT BRANDON

George Harvey Hanson, Unable to Swim, Meets Death While in Whiskey Lake Last Saturday

The death by drowning of George Harvey Hanson of near Brandon last Saturday afternoon was one of the most tragic in the history of this county. The drowning occurred in Whiskey Lake where George Hanson with his bride of a week about, his brother, Hans, and other relatives had gone on a picnic party.

About four o'clock George with his brother, Hans, neither of whom could swim, went in the lake with the boat. The young men hung from the sides of the boat in about six or seven feet of water. Evidently George let go of the side of the boat, and his brother who noticed he was struggling in the water went around to him to his help. George grabbed his brother by the neck, and would have pulled both of them under, but Hans managed to free himself just in time. His brother went under and never came up.

Searching parties dragged the lake immediately afterwards, but the young man's body was not recovered until about twenty-two hours afterward, which was about 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The depth of water where the body was found was about twenty feet.

Funeral services were held from the home, one mile west of Brandon, at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon, and following that fromthe Chippewa church. The church choir sang special numbers. Rev. H. A. B. Winther conducted the service. As a mark of affection for the unfortunate youth most of the business places at Brandon closed during the hours of the services. The church was unable to accomodate much over half of the friends of the family who attended the services. The floral offerings were bountiful and of great beauty.

The Legion post of Alexandria assisted by the local guard unit furnished a military escort, consisting of a firing squad, a color guard and a bugler. The following exservice men acted as pall-bearers: Delphin Knutson, George Stene, Conrad Berg, Amos Elness, Clarence Sanders and Clarence Newhouse.

George Harvey Hanson was born in Brandon on Jan. 16, 1898, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Hanson, and was 24 years, 5 months, and 1 day old at death. He attended high school in Fergus Falls. In the spring of 1917 he enlisted in the Mounted Police of Canada, but in the following spring, he got an honorable discharge from that branch of service and enlisted in the U. S. Navy, in 1919. Following his discharge from the navy he was carried as a reserve in the same branch of the service.

On June 12 of this year he was married to Miss Esther Jenson at Mitchell, S. Dak. On the 14th of the month he with his wife came to Brandon where he had planned on entering business. Previous to returning to Brandon he had been a route carrier out of Lemmon, S. D.

Surviving the young man besides his wife and parents are four sisters and two brothers who are Mrs. Alexander Gillespie of St. Paul, and Hans, Gillman, Ida, Gladys, Evangeline and Vernon, all at home.

CARD OF THANKS -- We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who so kindly assisted and comforted us in our hour of bereavement and especially do we wish to thank all those who made the beautiful floral offerings.
Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Hanson

and Children.
