Larson 1st in computer games

David Larson placed first in the Northwest Region MECC Computer Contest and received a plaque and a certificate and the chance to enter the state-wide contest this fall.

David, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Larson of Beltrami, entered the computer games and computer art division in the Apple computer competition.

This was the 4th annual contest, sponsored by the Minnesota Edulational Computing Consortium (MECC), designed to promote and encourage imaginative use of computers by Minnesota students.

The state contest will be held in the fall in conjunction with the MECC fall conference.

David's entry was a computer game he called "Concentration". It was designed after "Hu Sker Du," he said.

David took about a month to design the game, which features 40 different shapes in 20 pairs. Each time the game is played by 1 to 5 players, the computer randomly places the shapes in different locations on the screen.

David started the game on his own time, but it ended up being a class project as well. He is one of the students in Gary Werner's Computer Programming Class.

David said he may refine the game before entering it this fall, and is looking forward to using the printout equipment the school board recently ordered, to complete his work on the game.

Judging was on originality, documentation, educational application, programming and overall appearance.
