The Rev. Samuel Pattillo b. Jan. 25, 1771, Charlotte Co., Va., d. June 4, 1841, Covington, Newton Co., Ga., bur. West View Cemetery, Covington, Newton Co., Ga., married (1) Frances Hall in Greene Co., Ga., April 14, 1795, b. Feb. 19, 1771. He married (2) Martha Bailey July 16, 1815, Madison, Morgan Co., Ga., b. Aug. 17, 1790, Madison, Morgan Co., Ga., d. Sept. 14, 1842, bur. West View Cemetery, Covington, Newton Co., Ga. The announcement of her death was reported in the Oct. 21, 1842, Southern Christian Advocate (Ga. Mag. F. Huxton, 1961-62, p. 70).

Samuel Pattillo was taxed in McKeever's Mulberry Fork District in Jackson Co., Ga., 1803-1805. He was a fortunate drawer in the 1805 and 1821 Land Lotteries in Georgia, drawing first in Jackson County and second in Lee County. He is also listed in the 1832-1833 "Gold and Land Lottery." In 1820 census of Morgan County, 1830 census of Walton County and 1840 census of Newton County.

Rev. Samuel Pattillo and others purchased a piece of land in Newton County, Ga., to build a house of worship for the Methodist Episcopal Church from Julian and Cloe Bailey March 9, 1830. This same year Samuel Pattillo of Walton Co. purchased land in Covington, Newton Co., Ga., for himself (Film No. 42492 pt 5 SLC).

He had 9 children by Frances (Fanny) Hall and 9 by Martha Bailey. These are all listed in book mentioned above. Outstanding descendants include Rev. Charles Leroy Pattillo who organized the Pattillo Methodist Church in Decatur, Ga. He was born Aug. 19, 1849, and was the great-grandson of Samuel Pattillo, Jr., present (1986) President of Oglethorpe University, Atlanta, Ga., who is the great-great-grandson of Samuel Pattillo.

One grandson of Rev. Samuel Pattillo was Charles Henry Pattillo b. Sept. 18, 1846, Harris Co., Ga., d. May 3, 1860, and bur. by grandparents in Covington, Ga. He was the son of Samuel Henry Pattillo.
