NOTES:
- Pattillo's Station post office actually was in Beaumont, before it became a city. George Pattillo was postmaster at this time.
- Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar was the second president of the Republic of Texas.
- After his term as president, Mr. Lamar became an ambassador to Nicaragua. He took all of his papers with him, and on one occasion the trunk with the papers fell out of a wagon into a mud hole, and much was ruined. This particular letter survived.

His Excelency [sic] M.B. Lamar
Dear Sir Enclosed you will find the Petition of Jessee Ashworth Praying Permition [sic] to remain quietly in This Republic until the next meeting of Congress. Mr. Ashworth is a man under a good character and in good standing
in the country where he has migrated from. I have myself been aquainted [sic] with him for the Last fifteen years, and know him to Be a quiet and unasuming [sic] good citizen. You will confer a favor by paying some attention To the petition. Mr. Ashworth is not only a good Citizen but a man of some property and will be of some benefit to the government.
