His parents were George Schweyer and Sophie Mercker. - Margaretha was born 10 October 1793 at 4 p.m. in Ingwiller during the second year of the German Republic. (Alsace was annexed by the German Republic around 1791 and was given back to France around 1815). Her father, Frederic Schleiffer, was a farmer in Ingwiller. - Georg and Margaretha and their first five children were born in Ingwiller, Alsace. - They came to America from the port of LeHarve in France aboard the ship "Lorena." The ship had 385 passengers (all farmers) and landed in New York harbor on 5 June 1834. The family bought with them seven chests of possessions, one gun, one waggon (sic), and two hundred pounds of bread. They traveled from New York City to the Buffalo area on the Erie Canal. - Georg was one of the early settlers in Dutch Hollow. Peter Zittel was the first German immigrant to settle in Dutch Hollow in 1833. On 3 July 1834, Georg Schweyer, "late of Alsace in the Kingdom of France, now of Sheldon," bought two parcels of land north of Strykersville: 30 acres for $310 and 100 acres for $1400. On 19 August 1835, Margaretha Schweyer of Sheldon bought a plot of land (unknown acreage) near Wolf Creek in Sheldon for $650. - Their sixth and last child Margaret was born in America in 1837. - Georg applied for citizenship in Buffalo NY on 16 July 1840 and was granted citizenship in Warsaw NY on 22 February 1844. - Georg died in 1865 and Margaretha two years previous. They both are buried in the Dutch Hollow cemetery on Centerline Road. - The original spelling of the name (Schweyer) gradually change to the modern spelling Swyers. Variations have included Schweier, Schwier, and Swyears. To make it easier in this day of computers, the last name has been spelled with the modern spelling. C.F. (Buz) Swyers of western New York first contacted the Syers Seeker last fall. He has reason to believe that his family sprang from two German immigrants: George and Margaret Schweier. The following is a brief summary of their arrival in the America in 1812 and the first of their descendants. "Our ancestor, George Schweier, was brought into this world when George Washington was in this third year of office (1791) as the first President of our infant Country. "The Schweier family arrived in this Country from Germany in 1812 when the City of Buffalo was being destroyed by the British. After a long sailboat trip from Germany, they traveled by foot from what is now New York City. Walking out on an old Indian Trail which is now Big Tree Road or Route 20A, they settled for the winter in the Cazenovia Park area, where they built their log cabin homes. The local Indians were troublesome which resulted in the family pulling up stakes the following Spring and continuing their trek over the same trail where they finally arrived in a safer place which is now Strykersville, New York. "As far as can be determined, George and Margaret Schweier had two sons, Andrew and George. From this beginning the Swyers Family grew . . . . From : http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/3443/genswyer.html Jacob moved to Evans NY about 1849. His wife's name was unreadable on the 1855 New York census. Jacob died before 1861, and possibly his wife also. When his father's will was probated in 1861, the children were living in different towns in Erie and Wyoming County. In the 1865 New York census, one of the children was found living with a family who claimed him as an adopted son.
