Husband's General Notes
From http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/3443/gengerha.html John and Katherine came to US in 1838 when their son Frederick was 2 yr old. The journey by sailboat took 60 days. On board ship, the family cooked own food. The ship landed in NYC and the family came to Buffalo by way of the Erie Canal and canal boat. John bought a farm in Dutch Hollow near the corner of the Bloecher Road and Dutch Hollow road. The property was later owned by the Hallbauers and then sold to Henry James Kelver. John and Katherine and children farmed land and started a small store. They hauled their farm produce to Buffalo with a team of horses and wagon. The trip took the most part of 2 days. The roads were mere trails and paths at that time. The first improved road was a corduroy road (crosswise logs filled with dirt). This was between East Aurora and Buffalo. The corduroy road later replaced with planks of wood, bricks, and finally concrete and asphalt. John and Katherine were loyal members, ardent supporters and faithful attendants of St John's Lutheran Church in Dutch Hollow. Mrs Lany Torge, sister to John, came to America and settled in Wales Hollow, NY. A niece of John came to America and settled in Newark, NJ, where most of her descendants live 1880 Census Census Place: Sheldon, Wyoming, New York Source: FHL Film 1254948 National Archives Film T9-0948 Page 281C
