Wife's General NotesMargaret was a determined, reserved, intelligent woman who, against her father's wishes, traveled to a college in the south to become a doctor. To earn money to become a doctor, she worked as a secretary. To earn money to become a secretary, she taught school. S. Jordan and Margaret lived across the street from the Daniel E. Penfold family. Often "Uncle Jordan" brought gifts of honeycomb to the family and returned home with fresh vegetables. A private memorial service will be held later this week for Dr. Margaret Penfold Gilmore, 96, a former teacher, business woman and osteopath who died Saturday (March 17, 1973) in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clinton C. Dolber of East Aurora.
Dr. Gilmore lived with Mr. and Mrs. Dolber on Two Rod Rd., East Aurora, for the past several years.
A native of Cheektowaga, Dr. Gilmore began teaching in a one-room school on French Rd., West Seneca, when she was 17 years old.
After teaching for 5 years and being graduated from Bryant & Stratton Business Institute, Dr. Gilmore worked in busines for about 9 years. She dealt with grain loads as an office manager in the Buffalo Chamber of Commerce.
In 1908 she enetered Kirksville College of Oseopathy in Kirksville, Mo., and began practicing as an osteopathic physician upon graduation in 1912.
In 1914 she married Dr. Stephen J. Gilmore, also and oseteopath, and the two became partners in their practice in Missouri and Iowa.
The couple returned to the Buffalo area after they retired in 1930. Mr. Gilmore died about 5 years ago.
Mrs. Gilmore has been president and chaplain of both the Women's Club and Mother's Club of East Aurora and was a member of the East Aurora Christian Church for many years. She was also in the Senior Citizens of East Aurora until recently.
