Surname sometimes listed as POVAL, POEVALL, PUVALL POVEY, POVY, POVIE. [I wonder if the name may have evolved later to POWELL.] Given name considered by some to have been Robin.

"By family tradition, Robin (or Robert) POVAL (1650-1728) was from St. Martin-in-the Fields, London. He was stolen or indentured very young into service. He was a servant to Robert (King) Carter of Charles City Co., Virginia." 1

Was there another son, Charles? In 1717 he bought 100 acres in Henrico & Charles City Counties from James Powell COCKE. In 1719 he died, and John POVALL presented the inventory and appraisement of his estate. [These two items from Henrico Co. Original Papers, Package 1. Valentine Papers, Vol. III, p 1297]

ca 1683-1685 Apparently Robert and Elizabeth were in England, where Elizabeth HOOKER's identity was established as the daughter of Lord HOOKER of Malvern Hills, England, and as an heir to his estate. They occupied the HOOKER estate for a while and then leased it for 99 years, at the end of which period it is said it became escheated to the Crown. After abandoning the English estate, the POVALLs obtained possession of their home, "Malvern Hills," in Henrico Co., VA. 6 [Note: One of the very early battles of the Civil War was fought at Malvern Hills.]

24 Jun 1685 Articles of agreement made by and between George BLYTHE of ye Parish of St. Margaretts, Westminster, in ye Co. of Middlesex, souldier, decd. and Robert (X) POVALL of ye sd. Parish of St Martin's in ye ffields in ye County of sd. Mariner. The sd. BLYTHE for himself, Exors., admrs., assigns, &c. & for consideracons hereafter named; cove- nants, agrees, to serve the said POVALL from & after the Feast of ye birth of our Lord Christ next ensuing for the term of six years. The sd. POVALL in consideracon of sd. BLYTHEs services, promises to provide for sd. BLYTHE "good, wholesome & sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging & apparell during ye sd. term & at end of term" double apparell and three barrels of corn & other allowances according to the custom of the Country where he shall serve his time as afsd." POVALL ordered that 200 lbs. tob. & cask b deducted out of his bill to the sd. estate for a mare which at time of outcry was supposed to be running in the hundd. but now is made appear that she was then dead. 17

1 Aug 1692 Robert POVALL presented an acct. of 4112 1/2 lbs. tobac against the estate of Fr. Cleavely, decd. including Funerall charges &c. The Court ordered pd. out of estate of sd. CLEAVELY 3271 lbs. the rest of sd. account not being proved as ye law directs. 18

16 Sep 1728 Robert POVEALL signed a will appointing sons John & Robert POVEALL to be joint executors to divide the estate as they see fit without being appraised by order of the court. Bequests:

Son John - Half of the land and half of the personal estate. 2 young horses & "the bed that I now lie on."

Son Robert - Half of the land and half of the personal estate. If Robert dies without heirs the land would all go to John. [Note: Robert died four years later leaving a wife and two children, one of whom was appointed co-executor] The crop of tobacco on hand and 2 negroes.

Daughter Sarah ROACH - A negro girl now in her possession.

Daughter Mary CARTER - A negro girl.

Giles CARTER [son-in-law?] - Ten barrels of corn to assist in getting the crop of corn.

Witnesses: James Powell COCKE, Mary (X) COLEY, Ellinor (X) EVANS.
