Family tradition is that Elizabeth HOOKER was stolen from her home in England and sold into service. In 1679 she was a servant in the home of Solomon & Katherine KNIBBE in Henrico Co. Virginia, whose planta-tion adjoined that of Robert (King) CARTER where her future husband, Robert (Robin) POVALL, was a servant.

Born 1657 England [Henrico Co., VA, deposition dated 20 Jan 1679 declares Elizabeth HOOPER to be 22 years of age. 1

Married Apparently Elizabeth & Robert were married twice.

[Was the first marriage before 1683?] "Elizabeth HOOKER's identity was established as the daughter of Lord HOOKER of Malvern Hills, England.

At his death she, being his rightful heir, sailed for England to claim the estate. Before sailing Elizabeth married Robin POVALL. They remarried again in England to satisfy legal requirements." 2 2 Oct 1682 Robert POVALL did this day give notice of his intended voyage to England by setting up his name at the Court House Door according to law. 3 Sep 1683 Acct of Licenses returned to Town (Jamestown) viz; Robert POVALL for marriage with Eliza. HOOPER. (Gov. Fee) 20d [pence] or 200 wt. tobacco. 3

[Was this the Virginia license or the English one?]

"The Hooker estate was occupied a while and then leased for 99 years at the end of which period it is said it became escheated to the Crown. After abandoning the English estate the POVALLs obtained possession of their home, "Malvern Hills," in Henrico Co., VA." 2

Apparently Robert and Elizabeth were in England from 1683 until after June, 1685. See Robert's sheet showing a transaction in England on 24 Jun 1685 and another in Henrico Co. VA on 7 Oct 1685.

The information above is also reported in Genealogies of Virginia Families, from the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore Md. 1981. Vol. V p.279

Died Probably before 1728. Elizabeth is not listed in Robert's will.
