Martha Cartwright married William Carraway in Princess Anne, Va some time before 1753. Their children were Thomas, and likely a number of others. They were both dead by 1761 when James Carraway in his Princess Anne will named as an heir "Thomas Carraway, infant orphan to William and Martha Cartwright Carraway, decd." (The particular identity of this William Carraway remains uncertain.)
In 1729 William Cartwright was in NC and with John Carraway witnessed
John Wexdell's deed to John Keeling for 130 acres. It was adjacent to
property of John Bernard Sherwood. (It appears that all of these
people with the exception of Wexdell had come from Princess Anne Co.
VA.
In the 1753 will of William Cartwright in Princess Anne he mentioned daughter Martha Carraway. The executor was son Robert, who received the major portion of the property:
1753 - Will of William Cartwright, dated 20 May 1753, proved 17 June, Princess Anne Co., Va. Wife use of the Plantation during her widowhood. Son Robert Plantation whereon I now live. Gr-son William Cartwright Plantation whereon sd son Robert now liveth with reversion to son Robert. Daus: Elizabeth Har[er, Margaret Ddudley Martha Carraway, Frances, Anne, Sarah, Amy, Educating & bringing up my 3 children Anne, Sarah & Amy. Robert Cartwright moved to Craven Co. ca 1767 with a large purchase from John Tomlinson. The property was largely on the south shore of the Neuse, but questionably he may have also acquired property in the Lower Broad area:

The next document, a receipt, refers to the property on the sound and easternmost side of South River.
There was also a close association between Cartwrights in Hyde County NC and Claytons there, although no blood ties are evident. The Cartwrights in Hyde Co. were or at least became Quakers.
James Clayton, Sr., father of James Clayton of Craven Co., had come from Kent Co. DE in the early 1740's and patented a considerable amount of property along the shores of Lake Matamuskeet. He sold much of this property in 100-300 acre lots to a number of people and some 1000 acres of it to his son, James, before his death in 1761. At that time son James, as "sole heir", inherited the balance of his father's land.
James Clayton, Jr. continued to sell off most of the Hyde County land. Among the purchasers from his father had been James Hall, a man who appears to have been related to the Claytons in Kent Co. DE and who came south at about the same time that James Clayton, Jr. did. Near James Hall's property was that of Ezekiel Cartwright, who had purchased from James Clayton, Jr. in 1764.
In 1798 three Quakers, Ezekiel Harris, James Hall and Lemuel Cartwright were conveyed an acre on the lake by executors of John Moore, who had died in Jones Co. There was a Quaker Meeting House on this property. Elliott Clayton, grandson of the original James Clayton of Hyde joined this meeting in 1814.
We thus see an association in Hyde County between the Cartwright and Clayton families with a Quaker flavor and in Princess Anne Co. VA a family relationship between Cartwrights and Carraways, who later intermarried with Claytons.
