The North shore of the Neuse passes successviely through 4 quadrangles. These four quadrangles comprise Pamlico Co., which was originally a part of Craven Co.:

A series of creeks flows down into the Neuse:
Lower Broad (It's north branch is Brown's Cr.)

Smith Cr. (Trent Cr. arises a couple of miles ne of the head of Smith Cr. and flows north and nw into the Bay River flowing eastward.)
Green Cr. (It's north branch is Kershaw (Cashaw)

Upper Broad, which forms the boundary between Pamlico and Craven

The Clayton, Carraway, Delamar, Carruthers and many related families lived for the most part along these creeks.

1733 John Carraway was overseer of the road to head of Brown's Creek in place of Thomas Fulcher. (a branch of Lower Broad)

In Hyde Co. Francis Delamar was an executor in the will of John Martin in 1737, as was also John Carruthers, Martin's brother-in-law. Wm and Elizabeth Carruthers were witnesses. Years later when James Clayton, Jr. moved to Craven County, he acquired one tract of land from Delamar and another from Carruthers. (In the will Martin mentions his "lower plantation at mouth of Broad Creek", which presumably may be very near the area where James Clayton, Jr. settled in Craven (now Pamlico) County.)

1738 John Carraway was constable from Beard Creek to Lower Broad.

1739 Thomas Carraway anf Furne Green, Jr. named commissioners of the roads from Beard's Creek to the mouth of Lower Broad.

In 1767 James Clayton had acquired property in Craven County on the Lower Broad Creek: two tracts from John Carruthers and one from Francis Delamar. James Clayton appears on a tax list in Craven County in 1769 with five slaves:

In 1774 James Clayton acquired more property in the Lower Broad Creek area from Joseph Brooks. (See Craven County deed books 14, 15 and 21.) The Brooks tract appears to be his last land acquisition except for a patent for 500 acres on the sound granted in 1782.
