There is some indication that the first Whitehursts in VA were Quakers, and even deportees from the mother country. The first primary source I've found in this country is in VA Patent Book 1 p. 396:
In 1636 William Whitehurst was one of a large list of transportees of James Vanevit for 1000 acres in Eliz City Co. (also John Wilcocks and Hugh Lawson)(Cf Cavaliers and Pioneers Nugent Vol 1, 1623-66 p. 50)

In 1648 Richard Whitehurst got 250 acres on Gayther's Creek, the south branch of the Elizabeth River. He also purchased another 300 acres the following year, (cf Pat Book 2 p. 198) and got 700 acres in 1651 for transporting 14 people. (Pat 2 page 350) (Was this Richard the son or brother of the William above? Some researchers have concluded that William and Richard were the same man.)

The Grand Jury for 1652 included Lancaster Lovett, Edward Cannon, Richard Whitehurst, and Andrewe Nichols . (Lower Norfolk Co. 1641-64 Court Minutes p. 20) (Lovett and Cannon were part of the Carraway extended family.)

In 1653 Richard Whitehurst was again on the grand jury, and Richard Ackton gave P/A dated 1650 to "well beloved friend Richard Whitehurst of the Eastern branch in Eliz River, to collect debts and transact other business in VA.

In 1665 William Whitehurst acquired 1000 acres at the head of Indian Creek adj. 700 acres granted to Rich. Whitehurst decd on 22 Nov 1651 and now due said Wm Whitehurst as his son and heir plus 300 acres for transportation of 6 persons. (Pat. Book 5 p. 529)

In 1689 John Whitehurst acquired 50 acres at the north end of a patent for 100 acres granted to William Rogers of Lower Norfolk. (Pat 8 p. 26)

1690 William and Rich Whitehurst acquired 1150 acres on Indian Creek, granted said Wiliam in 1665 plus 150 acres for trans of 3, including John Moore. (pat book 8 p 69)

C.A.Critchell in #312 of the Whitehurst Family Forum tells us that Richard Whitehurst was a "transported Quaker". (I'm seeking documentation for that data.)

To get the ball rolling I submit the following which is compiled from various sources including Rebecca Sanders Book "Grandfather of Us All", Will records of Norfolk County, Cavaliers and Pioneers, etc.

Richard Whitehurst was born in Trentham, Staffordshire England about 1606. He first appears in Norfolk County, VA records in 1648. It is unknown when he came to America and it is unknown if he was the son, brother, or same person as the William Whitehurst who appears in James Vanerit's headright claim of Oct 17, 1636.

Richard and his wife Ellen had the following children (birth order/dates are somewhat arbitrary):

William Whitehurst (c1633-1702)
Richard Whitehurst (c1636-1704)
James Whitehurst (c1639-1721)
Robert Whitehurst (c1642-1679)
John Whitehurst (c1645-1691)
Ellen Whitehurst (c1648-????)
Susan Whitehurst (c1651-????)
Princess Anne Whitehurst (c1653-????)

Joel Russell's listing of the 2nd generation agrees with that of bango, though he added a third daughter. *************************************************************************** This from richard2.htm in russell subdirectory: http://genforum.genealogy.com/whitehurst/messages/7.html

Joel also contributes this listing of

IIb. Richard Whitehurst (1636-1715) md Margaret "Mary" Nichols [md 2 Mary Batson this marriage omitted in Joel's 1998 posting]

Richard Whitehurst, son of Richard Whitehurst and Ellen was born about 1636. His wife is identified as Margaret Nicholas/Nichols, daughter of Richard Nichols. Richard and Margaret's children include:

William Whitehurst (c1662-1731/32)
Richard Whitehurst (c1665?-1765)
John Whitehurt (c1667-????)
Batson Whitehurst (c1670-1759)

IId. Robert Whitehurst (1642-79) md Ellinor Nicholas:
2. Robert (1669-1741) (died in Carteret Co. NC) Robert Whitehurst, son of Robert Whitehurst and Ellinor Nicholas (or Nichols), was born about 1669. His wife is unknown at present and his will was proven in Carteret County, NC in May 1741. Children mentioned include:

Samuel Whitehurst (1700-56) (will proved Nov 1756)
Ellinor Whitehurst
William Whitehurst
Sarah Whitehurst

The Nichols/Nicholas Family

The Nichols were said to have come to America as indentured servants of William Whitehurst; Whitehursts, Nichols/Nicholas and Goldsmiths were Quakers, but soon became Anglicans. (Cf C.A.Critchell in the Whitehurst Forum #342) Note that Andrewe Nichols was on the 1652 Grand Jury with Richard Whitehurst. The following marriages are of interest:

Richard Whitehurst (1636-1715) married Margaret "Mary" Nichols.
Robert Whitehurst (1642-79) married Ellinor Nicholas.
John Whitehurst (1645-74) married Mary Nicholas.
Elizabeth Carraway, born in 1651, married William Nichols in 1671.
In 1849 Peter Nichols married Rebecca Carraway in Craven Co., NC.

Andrew, Henry, and Richard Nichols were brothers:
Andrew's son William Nichols married Elizabeth Carraway in 1671.
Henry's daughter, Ellinor, married Robert Whitehurst.
Richard's daughter, Margaret, married Richard Whitehurst
Who was Mary Nicholas, the husband of John Whitehurst?
