Founding of Abbeville

Joseph LeBlanc was born in 1763 and died in 1812. His first wife was
Marguerite Duhon. In 1801 He married Marguerite Bernard and lived at Fausse
Pointe, near St. Martinville. From Joseph's second marriage was a son named
Joseph. This Joseph LeBlanc is first known to have settled what is now Abbeville, La.
Joseph married Clarisse Trahan, daughter of Marie LeBlanc and Charles Trahan.
Joseph owned a small farm on the Vermilion River. Pere Megret went to Joseph
to build a church after several attempts to build at Perry's Bridge.
So in 1843 Joseph sold Pere Megret this land. Joseph's home was remodeled and
in 1844 became St. Mary Magdalen's Catholic Church. Thus making this land
"La Ville de L'Abbe" or Abbeville.
