She was a steady and consistent Christian, and daily sought the promotion of the Redeemer's kingdom on earth; her life was blessed and happy, and her end was peace. Being the founder and patron of several benevolent and charitable institutions the poor have, by her death, lost a kind and charitable friend.

FERGUSON, Samuel Johnston - D14/6/1929 - Samuel Johnston Ferguson died on 14th June, 1929. He was the Governor of the Reformatory School in Stranraer. Here is the the Notice of his death in the Free Press. We regret to annouce the death of Mr S.J. Ferguson, late governor of Stranraer Reformatory, which took place on Friday last. He had been in failing health for some time prior to his last illness. Coming to Stranraer a quarter of a century ago. Mr Ferguson had already a reputation as a governor of an industrial school, and those who knew the kindly interest he took in the boys under his care can testify to the value of his work in this sphere during his governorship at Stranraer. Prior to this he had been in the Cameron Highlanders and was present with his regiment at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir . He was a keen sportsman , and bowling, shooting and angling were among his interests.

This is the Pulpit Reference for Samuel Johnstone Ferguson who died on 14th June, 1929. With Thanks to Wigtown Free Press. At the close of the morning service in Sheuchan C.F. Church on Sunday, Rev. Thos. Russell said:- "Before we separate I would like to say a word about one of our members who
passed to his rest on Friday - Mr Ferguson, the late governor of the reformatory, than whom, as long as he was able, no one was more regular in his attendance at this place of worship. I am constrained to do so because no one could have served his day and generation, in many spheres more wholeheartedly, and more faithfully than he did. He had been richly endowed with strength of body and alertness of mind, and throughout the long years he shouldered his responsibilities readily and always without slackness. Born at Muirkirk nearly 70 years ago he found his way in his early manhood to the industrial area of Lanarkshire, and there he became employed in the ironworks about Mossend and Motherwell. His vigour of personality took him ultimately into the army, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He was sent out to Egypt with the force commanded by Sir Garnet Wolseley on the expedition made necessary by the rebellion of Arabi Pasha. He was with his regiment, the Cameron Highlanders, at the battle of Tel-el-Kabir, and after the settlement of affairs in Egypt was one of the non coms retained for the reconstruction of the Egyptian army in which he held commissioned rank. Marriage, however brought him back to civil life, and on his return to this country he took up reformatory school work on securing an appointment in Mossbank industrial school. After some years service there he and his wife were appointed governor and matron of the reformatory school in Stranraer. The appointment was made at a time of great difficulty, financial and otherwise for the school, but his faithful service, kindly control, and capable management through more than 25 years service gave abundant justification in the election which the directors made. He knew how to manage and control boys without oppressing them, and to maintain discipline without (fuss). He was always interested in the boys and nothing delighted him more than to hear they were making good. He was kind to them, caring for their bodies as well as for their souls, and nothing irritated him more than to hear of any of the boys when they were away from school, being neglected or slighted in any way. His was that practical kind of Christianity which lays emphasis on the (kindlier) aspects of human life, and which at the great assizes, will not go without its reward. Probably the work he did as recruiting agent in Stranraer during the war has not been sufficiently recognised but knowing the soldiers' life as he did, and the whole army routine, his service given loyally during that time of stress and
national anxiety was invaluable. He had boys of his own in the fighting line and no finer testimony could be paid to him than that, he thought of others' boys when they went away, and when they came back as if they were his own, sparing neither time nor trouble in order to secure their well-being. There are many who will remember him as a lighthearted, open handed, sympathetic, generous (soul?). We knew him here in the church as one who, while he was able, was always in his place, giving an example to the boys of a faithful and reverent worshiper in the House of God. No one could have responded more readily or more generously according to his means than he did to the maintainances of the church's cause in all departments of it's work. Some years ago he was elected a deacon, and while failing health prevented him from doing all he would have liked to do in his office, yet, to the very end he was keenly interested, and liked to know all that was going on. The claims of the young people appealed very specially to him, and year by year, as the time for their summer outing came round he made it him business to see that so far as he could make it the day would be right for them. In Mr Ferguson's death the church has lost a good friend, a loyal supporter, and a useful and very helpful member, and I am glad, associated closely as I was with him, both outside and inside the church, to pay this tribute to his memory. He had great force of character with the instinct of command which fitted him absolutely for the position he held. He had kindness of heart and a real (solicitude) for the welfare of others which kept him from all uncharitableness of speech or conduct, and which won for him the respect and esteem of the community. Now he is gone, and no words are more appropriate as we stand by the bier of our dead friend:- "Now the labourer's task is o'er * Now the battleday is past. * Now upon the further shore. * Lands the voyager at last. * Father in thy gracious keeping * Leave we now thy servant sleeping."

FORSYTH, Rev. J. LL.D. - in the WFP D13/7/1843 - At Belhelvie, Aberdeen, the Rev. J. Forsyth, LL.D., minister of that parish, the inventor of the percussion gun, and a near relative of Lord Brougham. (The Rev James Forsyth served Belhelvie from 1766-1790 when his son, the above Alexander, succeeded him. Alexander was the one who received renown for inventing the percussion lock not his father James. I was unable to find a date of death for his father, but his father James would have had to be approximately 100 if he lived to 1843. The other option is that this is in fact an error and it should have been Rev A. J. Forsyth. This seems odd since this was inserted July 13, 1843 and the Death Notice for Alexander was inserted two weeks previous on June 29, 1843, so the staff at the WFP should have picked up on it - addenda as per Randy)
