IRVINE, Samuel - in the WFP 14/11/1867 - We are called on (says the "Ayr Observer" of Tuesday) to perform the sad duty of recording the death of Mr Samuel Irvine, book seller and stationer, which took place this morning. Mr Irvine was one of the oldest of our inhabitants, having obtained the advanced age of 97, and we should fancy he must have been the oldest man in business in the town, having been in the trade he carried on for considerably upwards of 40 years, and occupant of the shop he held to his death and that adjoining for 34 years. He came to Ayr a comparatively young man, and with no great interest, being then in the employment of Messrs Blackie, the publishers, Glasgow, but by steady perseverance and assiduousness, be succeeded in founding a good business. He had all along good health on his side; for we believe that till within a very few day's of his death he never had a serious illness, and he used it to purpose, for he was seldom absent from duty during his long service.
