Biography; John Jefferson Holbrook
Neighbors were few and far between, roads an unknown convenience, and security of life not
a certainty when William Holbrook and wife, grandparents of the subject of this sketch, left their
home in North Carolina, and came to Indiana. One of their sons, John, father of John Jefferson,
was eleven years old upon their removal to Indiana. He became a farmer and devoted his days to
that calling, living in Union township, Shelby county, the remainder of his life. He was a member of the
Baptist church of Union township, and was an active worker. He did much to promote the usefulness
of the church and exerted a wholesome influence upon the life in the community. He died April 3,
1900. He was married to Mary Ann Brown (Husrt), and the following children were born to
them: Barbara, who married Sampson Meiks; Robert, William E., John Jefferson, Mary
Jane and James, both deceased; George W. and Levi.
John had no chance for education, but he received first hand discipline in the daily duties on the
farm, and this fitted him for the arduous labors that confronted him as a man. He remained at the par-
ental homestead during the life of his parents and managed the affairs of the home.
In 1895 Mr. Holbrook married Eva May (Jerold) Smith, who was born in Liberty town-
ship, this county, February 24, 1862. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jerold.
She had two children by her first husband, James W. Smith, viz: Jessie L., born January 25,
1885, and Ernest A., born March 22, 1890. Mr. and Mrs. Holbrook are the parents of two
children --- Carrie Dennis, born January 23, 1896, and Albert A., born November 29, 1899.
Mr. Holbrook has a well-ordered farm and a comfortable home, well supplied with the con-
veniences of modern farm life. The farm has been his home since the time of his birth, and he takes
great delight in giving the work of the place his personal attention. He is a progressive farmer and
devotes his attention to some extent to live stock. His methods of stock raising and agriculture are
in keeping with the progressive spirit of the times, and his prosperity is a monument to his thrift and
ably directed efforts. He has never sought public office, but takes a keen interest in the general
affairs of world-wide importance, and also of the minor affairs that go to make up the varied and often
complicated problems of local community life. He is a member of the Chrisitan Union church of Ray's
Crossing.

Biography; George Washington Holbrook
On the 27th of April 1853, there was born in Union township, Shelby county, George
Washington Holbrook, the son of John and Mary Ann (Brown) Holbrook, both pioneer
settlers on the county. John Holbrook was born in Stokes county, North Carolina, July 13, 1813.
When sixteen years of age he came with his parents to Indiana. There were twelve children in the
family and they located in Union township, this county, when the only roadways were blazed
trails, when the domestic animal was the ox, and the markets for produce were Lawrenceburg
and Cincinnati. Here the family was reared to maturity and the members have formed a part of
the county's substantial and progressive citizen, our subject's father having attained to a ripe old
age, his death occurring in 1900.
Mary Ann Brown was born in Harrison county, Ohio, in 1812, and came to Shelby county with
her parents when about thirteen years of age. Her ancestors were of Welsh descent. She was
married to John Holbrook in 1836, and died in 1898. She reared a family of eight children, viz:
Barbara, Robert Wesley, William Emmans, John J., Mary C. and James H., both
deceased; George W. and Levi.
Our subject was educated in the common schools of the neighborhood, attending for the most
part the old Bronson school, where the short winter terms limited the period for schooling to a
much shorter time than is offered to the children of the present day. He was brought up on the
farm and learned the lessons of thrift, industry and perseverance that have characterized him as
a man. In 1879 he was married to Missouri Ann Hawkins, daughter of John B. and Amy
(Linville) Hawkins. Mrs. Holbrook was born in this county on June 22, 1858, her parents on
both sides being among the early settlers of the county. Her father was born in Germany and came
to America when six years age. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Holbrook began their domestic
career as farmers. Two children have been born to them, viz: Cora L., born January 24, 1880,
and Thomas J., born July 6, 1883. Cora was married to Leonard P. Ford, and had a family
of three children, George F., Hugh M. and Bernice Mildred.
Mr. Holbrook has continued general farming and as a result of his industry and intelligent effort,
he has a well improved farm of sixty acres, a modern and comfortable home, and is held in high es-
teem by his many friends and acquaintances. He and his family are members of the Little Blue River
Baptist Church. Mr. Holbrook is a Democrat in politics, but has never sought office, preferring
rather to devote his thought and energy to his work of farming, but at the same time he keeps close-
ly in touch with all matters of public interest, and has positive convictions on the leading questions
of the day.

She died in Dallas, and was shipped back to Indianola for burial in the Choate's Prairie Cemetery. In 1977, on a visit to the old cemetery by this writer(Shirley B. Cawyer), we found her stone off the base. We hired a young man visiting the cemetery, to replace the stone;1860 buried after 14 Feb 1901 at Choates Prairie Cemetery, Indianola, I.T.1861
She was left an orphan when her mother died only a few weeks after her birth. A family named, Willingham, was coming to Texas, so Sarah and her daughters came on the train with them to Cooke Co., Texas. Sarah purchased 400 acres of land near Whitesboro, TX, made a few crop failures, and then migrated on to Indianola, I.T. with the Willinghams.
After arriving at Indianola, Sarah was hired by George Choate as a seamstress for his family. Choate provided a log house for the Heifner's to live in. He hired two of the daughters, Amelia and Josephine as house maids, to serve, cook, and do the usual household chores. Josie remembered a young man, name not known now, as working for the Choate family. The young man became ill with Scrofula, a type of tuberculosis. He was placed upstairs of the Choate home, with a stairway on the outside. The hired girls would place a plate of food through a small opening of the door for him. When he died, his clothes and bedding were burned, and sulphur was burned in the house to kill any bacteria of the disease.1864 From pictures we have seen of Sarah Jane(Shirley B. Cawyer) she was a small, dignified lady, white hair, but had been dark auburn in her youth. She had dark blue eyes. From her Irish heritage, we know she had a lot of strength, perserverance, and love of her family before 1901.1865

Obit for C.S. Brown:
In Memorium- Author unknown
IN MEMORIUM
CHARLES S. BROWN
1858-1923
When we behold
God walking through our household fold
And choosing there one of his own dear sheep,
Whom we would keep,
How can oureyes forbear to weep.
Where God doth ask,
Is it to give so hard a task?
That with so much ado and weeping,
We yield to His eternal Keeping?
Where he hath sown, can we forbid the reaping?
Take, then, the best
Fold them as lambs within Thy breast,
And with Thy Holy Spirit's dew,
So, blessed Lord, our hearts renew,
That we some day be folded with Thee, too.
Charles W. Brown, son of John H. and Sarah (Ellis) Brown, was
born July 27, 1858, near Harrison, Ohio, and died March 3, 1923, age
64 years, 7 months, and 4 days. He came to this State when he was
eight years of age. He was united in marriage to Lillie May Carter,
Oct. 6, 1880. She died in July 20, 1893. To this union were born
four children: one died in infancy; Mrs Fannie Dell Talbert died at
the age of twenty years, and Harry and Roy survive. December 6, 1894,
he was married to Elma L. Fisher, who survives. To this union five
children were born-- Doris, who died in infancy; Mrs Esther Goddard,
of Manilla; Mrs Helen Heaton, of Terre Haute; Florence Justine and
Jefferson at home.
There are eight little grandchildren to miss him-- Charles N.,
Rebecca, Glenn, Marjorie and Katherine Brown, and Glorine, Gene and
Melvin Junior Goddard, who will often call for Grandpa Charley. He
leaves one brother and two sisters to mourn his love: Rev. James L.
Brown of Clarksburg; Mrs Fannie Walker and Mrs Kte Linville, both of
Shelbyville. Besides his own immediate family, he will be missed by a
host of friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Manilla M. E.
Church.
What could our love have done?
We tried to hold him fast,
Cried, cried to the tender hand
That we might understand
The right way, day by day--
That he might stay.
What could our love have tried?
What secret, mystified,
Could we have found for his dear sake?
Heart break;
Light dies; Life's tenderest breath
Grows cold upon his lips, but death
Chose him for Love's sake;
Not by mistake.
Perhaps if we could see
Where he dreams now of you and me,
Look once upon his face,
We might be glad such grace
Was shown our Glorified, --
Be satisfied!

COUNTY MOURNS DEATH OF CHARLES S. BROWN
WELL KNOWN FARMER PASSED AWAY SATURDAY NIGHT AT HOME IN UNION TWP.
The entire county mourns the death of Charles S. Brown, prominent resident of Union township, which occurred at his
home, Saturday night about 10:10 o'clock, as a result of a complication of diseases. Funeral services will be held at the Little
Blue River Baptist church, Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, the Rev. Mr Scull Officiating. Burial will be made in the Bennett
Cemetery, in charge of R.T. Stewart, funeral director.
Mr. Brown was perhaps one of the most widely known farmers of the county, and for the past many years had been
recognized as a leader in agricultural affairs of Shelby and adjoining counties. He was born in Hamilton county, Ohio, in July,
sixty-four years ago. When a young man, he moved to this county and for the past many years had resided on the farm in Union
township, where he died. He was united in a first marriage with Miss Lillie Carter, who passed away in July 1892. To
this union four children were born, one of whom died in infancy, and a daughter, Fannie, who passed away at the age of 20.
Harry and Ray Brown, by this marriage, survive.
He was later united in marriage with Miss Alma Fisher on Dec 6, 1894, and to this union five children were born,
one dying in infancy. Surviving are Mrs. Esther Goddard, of Manilla; Mrs. Helen Heaton, of Terre Haute; Miss
Justine, and Jefferson, both at home. He also leaves one brother, James L. Brown, of Clarksburg, and eight grand-
children.
He was a member of the Methodist church and was known by hundreds of residents of the county to be a
straightforward man of finest character. His death will be sincerely mourned by his many friends and is keenly felt by practically
every resident of the city of Shelbyville.

Obit of Fannie Dell Talbert
IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE
FANNIE DELL TALBERT
1885-1906
OBITUARY
"Death is the golden key that unlocks eternity". One of the
fathers says. "There is but this difference between the death of the
old and that of the young, that the old go to death and death comes to
the young."
FANNIE DELL, daughter of C.(harles) S.(ells) and Lillie May Brown
was born May 17, 1885, and departed this life March 7, 1906, being 20
years, 9 months, and 20 days old. She was married to Mellis Talbert
on the 16th of September, 1903. She united with the M. E. Church at
Manilla, Indiana, when a girl, of which church she was a member until
death.
When Fannie was seven years old she was bereft of her mother but
her loving grandmothers, Brown and Carter assisted the father until
her present step-mother became to HER a loving, kind and thoughtful
parent whose motherly care was reciprocated by her in an obedient,
faithful, true, filial love.
Fannie was a great comfort and stay to her father and was the
light of his home until she became the wife, companion and brave
helper in her husband's home. It is the testimony of one who knew her
in this relation, that no happier, sweeter or more blessed companion-
ship seemed possible. Fannie was kind, gentle and considerate to all.
She was remarkable for her even, mild and loving disposition. Her
friends, in the social circle, her schoolmates, her relatives all
loved her. She loved God and his Christ and longed for a larger ser-
vice to his Church.
Fannie was near to death a year ago but God gave her back to us;
but two months ago she was again smitten and became a great sufferer
until the end. Even in her most intense sufferings her patience, and
calm trust was an example to us all. Her husband and friends sought
every means to keep her but she went home. "To be with Christ which
is far better."
She leaves Harry and Roy, her older brothers who will sadly miss
her wise, loving and inspiring counsel and companionship and Esther,
Helen and Justine, her sisters who will look evermore in vain for her
home coming and fond caresses and Jefferson her little brother will
never more know the blessed sunshine of her loving presence. Her par-
ents will mourn, for how they needed the visits of one so true; and
Mellis will evermore try to answer that question in her last song.
"Will they Miss Me?" for no one can fill her place. Oh, if she knew
how large a place she holds in all our hearts! But we think of her
now as at rest in the bosom of her Lord.
I know 'tis the voice of the Savior that whispers
Home draweth nigh, Home draweth nigh;
I know we shall find in his kingdom of glory
Rest by-and-by, Rest by-and-by.1982
