Biography*

Joseph Culpepper was born around 1696 in Norfolk County, VA. He moved to Bertie County, NC in the early to mid-1720's, to an area which later became Northampton County. By the late 1730's he had moved to Edgecombe County, NC, where he died intestate around 1745.
     Since Joseph left no will, understanding the disposition of his land, and the disposition of the land of his brother Benjamin, is central to determining descendants of both lines.
     Joseph's son Benjamin apparently inherited all of his land by right of primogeniture. See the article on him for further details.
     Joseph's own ancestry is not in question, as he was a legatee in his father Robert Culpepper's will in Norfolk County in 1743, and no other early Joseph who could have been Robert's son.
     As mentioned, by 1725, if not earlier, Joseph was in Bertie County, NC, as in August of that year he witnessed two deeds there, one for William Whitehead and one for William Bennett. (Deed Book 1725-1727, B2, B14) Whitehead and Bennett owned land adjacent to each other on the Roanoke River.
     On 2 Aug 1727, John Bass, Jr., was granted "410 acres on the Northernly side of the Morattock [now Roanoke] River, joining the South side of Bear Swamp," adjacent to Robert House and Joseph Culpepper. (Abstracts of Land Patents by Margaret Hofmann, #2407 in her book, found in Patent Book 3, page 213).
     On the same day, 2 Aug 1727, Joseph Culpepper was granted 364 acres in Bertie County on the "Northernly parts of the Morratock [now Roanoke] River joining Robert Newsam and Robert House." (Abstracts of Land Patents by Margaret Hofmann, # 2435 in her book, from Patent Bk 3 p. 220).
     From the two previous grants, we can see that Joseph's land in the 1720's was near Bear Swamp in present day Northampton County, NC. So the land must have been east of NC State Road 305, and less than four miles north of present day Rich Square, NC (founded in 1750). Joseph may have lived in present day Northampton County, NC, from his first arrival in North Carolina, prior to 1725, until after the fall harvest of 1738.
     The John Bass, Jr., mentioned above, must have been related to Isaac Bass, who, some 30 years later, owned land on Peachtree Creek adjacent to Joseph's brother Benjamin. (Granville Grants Vol IV, by Margaret Hofmann, her no's. 963-5).
     On 5 Dec 1738, John Edwards [Sr.] of Bertie Pct. [later Northampton County], Esquire, deeded 320 acres in Edgecombe Pct. to Joseph Culpepper, for £16. The land was on the south side of the Morratuck River and the west side of Fishing Creek, and joined the land of Emanuel Rogers. (See more complete abstract above).
     As proven by the grant to the adjacent land owner, Emanuel Rogers, Joseph's new farm was near Beaverdam Swamp and present day State Road 48 and about 13 miles north of Rocky Mount, NC. The grant to Emanuel Rogers, was "on the South side of the Morattock River, joining Beaverdam Swamp (a branch of Fishing Creek). (Province of North Carolina 1663-1729 Abstracts of Land Patents by Margaret M. Hofmann, her # 2537, from Patent Book 3, page 246) Beaverdam Swamp is just south of Fishing Creek and just east of State Road 48.
     Joseph's new farm was about 30 miles west of his previous land on Bear Swamp in Bertie (later Northampton) County. Culpepper's Bridge, perhaps named for Joseph's nephew Benjamin, is on State Road 48 at Fishing Creek.
     A few years later, in 1749, William Culpepper got a grant in the same area. (Granville Grants Vol. I, by Margaret M. Hofmann, #645 in her book).
     Curiously enough, a land entry for a Benjamin Culpepper was adjacent to the land of John Rogers, thought to have been a brother of the above Emanuel Rogers. (Edgecombe County, NC Court Records, February 1741, Book of Rights, file # SS906, found at the NC Archives by Dick Culpepper).
     John and Emanuel Rogers may have been the sons of John Rogers, Sr., who died in Bertie (later Northampton) County, NC, in 1726. (Colonial Bertie County, NC, Deed Books A-H, 1720-1757, by Mary Best Bell, page 35 in the book, from Bertie Deed Book B, page 201, "Inventory of John Rogers, November 1726) Most of Emanuel Roger's land was north of Fishing Creek in the Quankey Creek area. J[ohn Rogers, Jr. owned land on Little Fishing Creek (a. k. a. Conway Creek), which was also north of Fishing Creek. In 1758 these areas north of Fishing Creek became part of Halifax County.
     In 1741 Northampton County and Edgecombe County were formed from Bertie County.
     In January 1741, Joseph Culpepper of Edgecombe County deeded to his brother Benjamin Culpepper, of Edgecombe Co, 160 acres for £8 on west side of Fishing Creek, which was one-half of the John Edwards tract mentioned above. Some 260 years later, this one key deed is the most troubling one to current researchers. One can only speculate why, but this deed does not adequately describe the land involved in this sale. Was this the east half, or the west half, of Joseph's original Fishing Creek property. We may never know. And the question is important. (A more complete abstract of the deed will be found above)
     Joseph's cattle brand is recorded in Edgecombe County in 1741 in the "Book of Marks.⁴.
     On 27 Feb 1743, Joseph Culpepper took out a land entry for 300 acres in Edgecombe County on the north side of Swift Creek below the mouth of Tuckahoe Branch, including his own improvements. (Tuckahoe Branch on Swift Creek is not mentioned in "The North Carolina Gazeteer," by Powell. It does mention other Tuckahoes, and says that the Tuckahoe was a plant whose roots were eaten by the Indians.) The location of this grant on Swift Creek has not been positively identified. This writer thinks that it was probably near Hilliardston Community, in current day Nash County. This is the point at which Sandy Creek becomes Swift Creek.
     Back in Northampton County, on 6 April 1745, John Edwards was granted 595 acres on both sides of Bear Swamp, joining Joseph Culpepper's land, and at a point near the mouth of White Oak Branch, Solomon Fuller, William Boon, and the said swamp. (Land Patents, by Margaret M. Hofmann, her # 2839, from Patent Book 5, p. 223).
     And on 10 November 1745, John Edwards granted 139 acres in Northampton County on both sides of Bear Swamp to Thomas Hayes, for £20. The land joined Joseph Culpepper, Solomon Fuller, and William Boon, and was part of a 595 acre patent to John Edwards dated 6 April 1745.
     Since Edward's original patent (Patent Bk 5, p. 223, as found in Hofmann, Colony of NC Land Patents, p. 199) also mentioned the same adjacent land owners, this might suggest that Joseph Culpepper still owned his land in Northampton as late as 1745, having moved to Edgecombe County a few years earlier. It is not clear whether Joseph sold this land in Northampton prior to his death in 1745, or whether his widow or heirs sold it after his death. Whoever bought the land, unfortunately, did not record the deed.
     John Edwards Sr., gave his sons John Jr., and Thomas, land in the Rocky Swamp area north of Fishing Creek, in what later became Halifax County. (Edgecombe Pct. Deeds, by Margaret Hofmann, Book 3, p. 136, and Book 5, p. 192) John Edwards Sr. died in Northampton County in 1765, and his will does not mention a daughter who married a Culpepper.
     So while Joseph and Benjamin Culpepper lived south of Fishing Creek, some of their acquaintances lived north of Fishing Creek, such as John and Emanuel Rogers.
     Joseph died in Edgecombe County in 1745. His wife Martha was appointed administrator of his estate in May 1745, and in August was appointed guardian of their four minor children, John, Joseph, Argent, and Sampson. The children were all under the age of fourteen since their guardian was appointed by the court.
     At the time of his death, Joseph apparently owned one or possibly two tracts of land. He owned the west half of his 320 acre grant on Fishing Creek. And he may have owned a 300 acre tract on Swift Creek, for which no final patent has survived. This writer thinks that he owned both tracts, and that that both devolved by right of primogeniture, to his son Benjamin. See the article on Benjamin for further details.
     Joseph's widow, Martha, probably continued to live on the west half of the Fishing Creek property until she remarried, around 1751 to Benjamin Dumas. At this point, her son Benjamin sold his half of the Fishing Creek property to his cousin Benjamin, ferryman, whose own widowed mother already lived on the east half of the property.
     On 21 August 1753, William Wilder sold 100 acres adjacent to the widow Culpepper and the widow Mason and the south side of Fishing Creek. Witnesses were Thomas Mann, Benjamin Culpepper (B was his mark) and Nathaniel Powell (N was his mark). (Edgecombe Pct. Deeds by Margaret M. Hofmann, Deed Book 4, page 531) This land had been a grant to William Wilder on 2 May 1752. (Granville Grants Vol. I, by Hofmann, #1292 in her book, from Patent Book 11, page 304) From the description of the land, we can see that it bounded Joseph Culpepper's original Fishing Creek property on the west.
     The widow Mason, just mentioned, was probably Hannah, widow of Ralph Mason. (Estate Records of Edgecombe County, NC, by Joseph W. Watson, page 175) Later deeds show Ralph Mason's son Mark living adjacent to the Culpepper farm, so Hannah must have been deceased by then. (Granville Grants, Vol. I, by Hofmann, # 999 in her book, from Patent Book 11, page 237 -- see also #863 and #1292 in this book) Ralph's son, Foster Mason, also lived in this area, and his wife Elizabeth was a widow by this time as well.
     William Wilder, just mentioned, had married Elizabeth Culpepper, daughter of Joseph and Martha Culpepper, around 1745.
     According to testimony in court Martha Culpepper's second husband, Benjamin Dumas died 1 Oct 1763 in Anson County. He did not leave a will.
     Martha's will has been found in the court minutes of a case filed in Salisbury District by John and Joseph Culpepper, sons of Joseph Culpepper, Sr., against David Dumas, son of Benjamin Dumas and administrator of his estate. Martha's will was dated 23 Jan 1764 and was probated 26 Jan, 1764. (Rowan County Estate Records 1753-1929, under the heading "Benjamin Dumas, 1764" at the NC State Archives).
     In it she mentioned her "well beloved children" Joseph Culpepper, John Culpepper, Sampson Culpepper, Elizabeth Wilder and Sarah Culpepper. Sampson was called "my youngest son." Elizabeth and Sarah were not mentioned when Joseph died so they must have been over 21 or married.
     A daughter, Argent, was mentioned in Joseph Culpepper's estate, but not in his widow Martha's will.⁵

ANALYSIS OF PETITION OF EXECUTORS OF MARTHA DUMAS

A Petition in Equity was filed by JOSEPH CULPEPPER and JOHN CULPEPPER, executors of the estate of MARTHA DUMAS against DAVID DUMAS, administrator of the estate of BENJAMIN DUMAS in the Superior Court of Rowan County, North Carolina in September, 1764. This Petition was recently found and copied in the North Carolina Archives by Gertrude J. Stone. The location of the record is most curious. The Archives stamped the copy.

In actuality the Petition is a pleading in the Superior Court and belongs in its records rather than in the estate records.

All of the parties were residents of Anson County, NC. Accordingly, at first it seems quite odd that the case was filed in Rowan County. A knowledge of the evolution of English courts taught only in legal history courses and of North Carolina courts is necessary to explain the anomaly. Over the centuries a dual court system evolved in England. "Law" courts were more rigid. "Equity" courts were more free to fashion a remedy if the aggrieved party "had no remedy at law." The Petition filed in this case was in equity. Apparently, there was no equity court in Anson County and Rowan County had equity Jurisdiction over Anson County. Hence, the case was filed in Rowan Superior Court.

Under English common law, when a husband died, his widow had dower rights in one-third of his estate during the remainder of her 1ife. However, upon the death of the widow, the property enjoyed by the widow during her lifetime would go to the heirs of the husband. The Petition was a suit by the children of MARTHA Dumas by her first husband, JOSEPH CULPEPPER, claiming the dower property should pass to them under MARTHA'S last will and testament rather than to revert to BENJAMIN DUMAS' children, by operation of law.

The Petition establishes the following:

( 1 ) BENJAMIN DUMAS died without will on October 21, 1763.

(2) MARTHA DUMAS made her will on January 23, 1764 and died the next day on January 24, 1764.

( 3 ) DAVID DUMAS applied for letters of administration for the estate of BENJAMIN DUMAS on January 24, 1764.
.
(4) The will of MARTHA DUMAS was proved on January 26, 1764.
.
( 5) The Petition was filed in September, 1764. However, for some reason, a Summons was not issued until March 22, 1766. The Summons set a court date of September 22, 1766.

The Petition sets out the verbatim text of the will of MARTHA DUMAS. The important parts are as follows:

(1) . . . I give and bequeath to my youngest son SAMPSON CULPEPPER ore Negro girl named Effey.

(2) .... I give and bequeath unto my son JOSEPH CULPEPPER, JOHN CULPEPPER, AND SAMPSON CULPEPPER, AND ELIZABETH WILDER, and SARAH CULPEPPER my well beloved children, an equal part and portion to each and every of them, to be equally divided..."

Some have speculated that Martha might have been Martha Mallory, since she had a grandson named Joseph Mallory Culpepper. However, as a Mallory researcher, and a descendant of Roger Mallory, immigrant to Virginia, I have found no evidence of this. Martha was probably from one of the Norfolk families who lived near the Culpeppers, or from an early Bertie County, NC family. No early Mallorys lived in either place.¹

Biography*

This Benjamin Culpepper is a rather elusive figure in our Culpepper family history. There are few records which can be attributed to him with certainty, other than one surviving fragment from his 1746 estate record, which has otherwise been lost. The following account of Benjamin is largely speculative in nature.
     Benjamin Culpepper was born in Norfolk Co., VA, perhaps around 1698. He was a legatee in his father, Robert Culpepper's, will there, which was probated in 1743.
     Benjamin probably married his apparent wife Martha around 1719 in Norfolk County, VA. Perhaps around 1721 or so, his eldest son, Benjamin Jr., was born. Benjamin and Martha probably had other sons and daughters as well, perhaps Robert Culpepper, and possibly, William Culpepper. This writer currently believes that William was more likely a son of Benjamin's brother, Robert Culpepper, Jr., and has listed him there. Likewise, Robert Culpepper of Anson is currently listed as a probable son of Robert Jr. of Norfolk, as well.
     Since Benjamin does not appear in Norfolk Co., VA tithable records during the years 1730-1736, he must have left Norfolk Co., VA, prior to 1730 to join his brother, Joseph, on the North Carolina frontier. At that time, Joseph was living in what is now Northampton County, NC. But prior to 1741 the area was part of Bertie County.
     By the mid 1730's the two brothers had apparently moved about 30 miles west, and settled on land on the south side of Fishing Creek, in what was then Edgecombe Precinct , NC (beginning in 1732) and which became Edgecombe Co., NC in 1741.
     This may be the Benjamin who witnessed the deed of John Rogers, Jr. "John Rogers, Jr., of Edgecombe Pct., to Edward Powers, 18 Jan 1735/6, for 14 pounds Virginia money, 170 acres more or less, on the north side of Fishing Creek, joining Goss and the creek, part of the land granted to William Goss on 10 April 1730. Witnesses John Williams ("E" his mark), Jacob Rodgers, Benjamin Culpepper ("B" his mark), and Robert Inman. (Edgecombe Pct, NC DB 1-143)
     In May 1741, Benjamin bought 160 acres on Fishing Creek from his brother Joseph Culpepper, for eight pounds, which was just what Joseph had paid for it. (DB 1, p. 379). Witnesses were Joseph's nephew Hopkins Wilder, and George Yate. It is impossible to tell from the poor desccription in the deed, whether this was the east or the west half of the original property. This writer believes, however, that it was probably the west half.
     On 22 May 1746, Martha Culpepper, thought to have been Benjamin's wife, was mentioned in Edgecombe County Court Records as the administrator of the estate of Benjamin Culpepper, deceased. Upon her request, the court ordered the sale of enough of the perishable estate of Benjamin Culpepper, deceased, to pay his debts. Perishable estate normally refers to crops, etc.
     Edgecombe estate records from this time period are not complete, for reasons unknown. So no further records from Benjamin's estate have as yet been found. But it would appear that the 160 acres he may have purchased from his brother Joseph, descended, by right of primogeniture, to his eldest son, Benjamin Jr.

It has been suggested, however, that she might have married William Culpepper, her first cousin, possible son of either Robert Culpepper, Jr., or of Benjamin Culpepper, his brother. If so, this could account for William's apparent close association with Joseph's family.

Biography*

John Culpepper was the son of Joseph Culpepper, and the grandson of Robert Culpepper of Norfolk Co, VA. He was born about 1733 in Bertie County, NC. The area became Edgecombe County in 1741. John was about 12 when his father Joseph died in 1745. His mother, Martha Culpepper, was appointed his guardian, since he was under age 14.

John moved to Anson Co. NC with the rest of his family around 1753 or 1754, when he was about 20 years old. The Culpeppers appeared in deed records in Anson as early as July, 1754.

In December 1754, John witnessed a deed from Thomas Harrington to his step- father Benjamin Dumas. Benjamin was buying 270 acres on the north side of the Great Pee Dee River (Anson Co., NC Deed Bk. B, p. 409).

John witnessed several other deeds in the 1750's, but did not purchase land himself until 1763, when he was about 30 years old. In January 1763, John Brooks sold him 100 acres on Richardson's Creek, on the south side of Rocky River (Anson Co. Deed Bk. 3, p. 9). John Culpepper sold this land to William Brooks two years later at a steep profit (Anson Co. Deed Bk. 3, p. 239).

Meanwhile, in January 1765, John bought 200 acres from John Colson. This new tract was on Brown Creek on the south side of the Pee Dee (Deed Bk. 3, p. 173). In March 1767, John was granted 100 acres on Rocky River (Anson Deed Bk 7, p.120). He sold this tract about twelve years later, in December 1778, to Jacob Green. In October 1783, John was granted 150 acres on the south side of Rocky River and the south side of Richardson's Creek (NC Grant #556).

John served in the Revolutionary War as captain of "John Culpepper's Company, Colonel David Love's Regiment, North Carolina Troops" (see Georgia Pensioners, p.186, pension application of John Arnett, who served in this company from Anson County). John was in his late 40's during the Revolutionary War. He had been captain of a militia group in Anson County since at least 1770 ("Colonial Soldiers of the South"). John moved to Georgia after the Revolutionary War, and lived in Washington County, which had been formed in February 1784 from the Creek cession of November 1783. It is not clear whether John, or his son, John, Jr. who was born about 1766, was the first to move to Washington County, GA. One or perhaps both of them were there by 1786, if not earlier.

There are also early records in Wilkes County, GA, for John Culpepper. John Culpepper witnessed four deeds in Wilkes County in 1785. These records may refer to John, son of Sampson, who was aged 20 in 1785. In September 1790 John Culpepper, Sr. bought 225 acres on Clark's Creek from Elijah Clarke (Wilkes Co., GA Deed Bk HH-105). This was clearly the elder John, son of Joseph, but it is not certain that he ever resided on this land, which he sold a few years later from Washington County. John Culpepper was also a juror in Wilkes County in 1790, and this must be John the son of Joseph, since his nephew John had returned to North Carolina at least by 1788, the year of his marriage in NC.

Getting back to Washington County, a John Culpepper took out a warrant for land in Washington County in April, 1786, for 200 acres, which was adjoining John Culpepper in Washington County (Washington Co. GA Surveyor's Records, Books D-E, p.258). This may conflict with the records of the Surveyor General's Office of the GA. Dept. of Archives and History, which records a grant to John Culpepper, Jr, dated 24 May 1786, and registered 31 May 1786, for 200 acres in Washington County bounded on all sides by vacant land (Register of Grants Bk. KKK, p. 157.) If the first record is correct, then John Culpepper Jr. was granted land adjacent to his father's land. If the second record is correct, then John Culpepper, Jr. was probably the first in his family to move to Washington County, and was followed there by his father John.

In the following records, it is not always clear whether John Culpepper, Sr., or his son, Rev. John Culpepper Jr. of Hancock Co., MS, was the recipient of the grants. John Sr. was aged 53 in 1786, and John Jr. was about 20. In any case, John Culpepper (probably Sr.) was a Justice of the Peace in Washington County in 1786 (from the Card File at the Georgia Archives).

The next grant to a John Culpepper in Washington County was dated 26 April 1787 and registered 7 May 1787. This was for 200 acres bounded on the east by Thompson, on the south by Williamson's Swamp (Reg. of Grants Bk. NNN, p. 282). John got an additional 200 acre grant on the same date, and registered the same date, bounded on the north by Williamson's Swamp, and on the east by Curaton's land (Grants NNN, p. 339).

On 24 September 1788 (registered 25 September 1788) John Culpepper was granted another 200 acres, bounded on the east by Sampson Culpepper, and John Culpepper's land (Grants QQQ, p. 444). From an 1839 deed in Laurens County, GA we know this land later fell in Laurens County on Buckeye Creek (Laurens Co. GA Deed Bk L, p. 303). It was inherited by John's son David Culpepper of Laurens Co. GA, and his grandson, David Sneads Culpepper of Dooly Co., GA.

On 30 Jul 1791 (registered 1 Aug 1791), Sampson Culpepper was granted 200 acres in Washington Co. bounded on the northeast by his brother John Culpepper (Grants UUU, p. 596.)

On 9 April 1792 (registered 11 April 1792), John Culpepper was granted 350 acres in Washington County, bounded on the northeast by Fort's land and Thomas Gilbert's land, and on the south by John Culpepper's land (Grants VVV, p. 391). This was probably the grant mentioned in a June 1808 deed in Laurens County, GA, in which John Culpepper (Jr.?) sells 269 acres of a "June 1792 grant to John Culpepper on Buckeye Creek in Washington County" (Laurens Co. GA Deed Bk E, p.63)

In January 1797, John was a resident of Washington County when he sold his remaining land in Anson County, NC (Anson Co. Deed Bk 17, p.145). This was the 150 acres in Anson County that John was granted in 1783, shortly before he moved to Georgia. This proves that the John Culpepper in early Anson was the one who moved to Washington Co. GA.

He was also residing in Washington County in November 1799, when he sold his land in Wilkes County to John Hogan (Wilkes Co., GA Deed Bk SS-85). John and others in his family were in Washington County in 1803, when they registered for the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery. The 1805 and 1807 Land Lotteries distributed land in the original Baldwin and Wilkinson Counties GA, from the Creek cessions of 1802 and 1805. These two counties were soon broken up into many smaller counties. Jones County was created from part of Baldwin in December 1807.

By 1808 John Culpepper, now about 75 years old, had moved into this newly opened territory, perhaps to live his last years with a son or daughter. In March 1808, John Culpepper, of Baldwin County, gave all his real and personal property to his children Sampson, John, Aggy, and Polly (Jones Co., GA Deed Bk A-435).

In June 1808, a John Culpepper of Jones County sold 269 acres in Washington County to Dennis Williams. This was perhaps John Culpepper, Jr., selling his share of his father's land, or his own land, prior to his departure for Mississippi in 1810 (See Passports Issued by the Governor of GA). This was part of a June 1792 grant on Buckeye Creek to John Culpepper (Laurens Co., GA Deed Bk E-63).

Latter deeds in Laurens County show children of John's sons David and Henry also selling parts of John's original grants in Washington County. John had given his sons David and Henry their shares prior to his March 1808 deed in Jones County. John Culpepper probably died in Jones County at the home of one of his children at the age of 75, not long after his 1808 deed.¹²

Irish Culpeppers

Were there any Irish Culpeppers? From time to time, we have heard researchers who believed that they descended from Culpeppers in Ireland. Certainly, a number of English and American Culpepper women married men with Irish ancestry, and several of these are documented within our family tree. And presumably, although we have no specific evidence, a number of English and American Culpepper men married women with Irish ancestry. But to date, we have identified no Culpeppers, Culpepers or Colepepers who were born in Ireland or lived there for any significant period of time.

Once source of the misunderstanding is an article that appeared on David Culpepper and is discussed below. If you are aware of any Culpeppers of Irish descent, or if you are aware of other Culpepper Irish legends, please let us know.

David Culpepper, born 15 Dec 1768
An article from Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Vol. 3, page 60, reads as follows [the text in brackets are comments by Lew Griffin]:

David Culpepper is the ancester [sic] of a number of Wiregrass Georgians. He was born in Ireland, Dec. 15, 1768, son of John and Agnes Culpepper who came to this country about 1780. David had two brothers, Sampson and Charles Culpepper, who also lived in Laurens County. [Charles was actually David's first cousin, the son of his uncle Sampson Culpepper]

The Culpepper were among the earliest settlers of Laurens County soon after its creation and were there as early as 1811 or before. [Actually, they settled on Buckeye Creek, in what later became Laurens County, in the 1780's. See the article on David's father, John Culpepper, in the Family Tree] David Culpepper married Elizabeth Hogan, born March 6, 1775, daughter of Griffin and Mary Hogan. They had four known sons, possibly other children.

I read your article on "Irish Culpeppers" which proposed that there were no American Culpeppers descending from Culpeppers born in Ireland. The myth was said to have originated from a report in Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia. I do not know when Wiregrass was written, but if it was done after about 1935, it likely got its information from Crisp County, Georgia: Historical Sketches by a Judge W. Fleming (Probate Court Judge). He lived in my hometown of Cordele, Crisp Co. GA. In discussing Judge Fleming's book with a number of local people over the years who personally knew the good Judge, I am informed that he made quite a few errors and did not verify a lot of his information. I became convinced that he was in error when he stated that our Culpepper Ancestor (John of John and Agnes) came over from "Ireland." My Uncle, Dr. Leon Raines Culpepper, had picked up on this error around 1960 or earlier, and marked it in his copy of the book.

Leon was the owner of the David Sneads Culpepper Family Bible, and personally gave it to me on March 1, 1985. The volume was in shambles when he got it, but he sent it off and had it refurbished to a beautiful condition. A musician and college professor, Leon did extensive research on the Culpepper family history in the Washington Library in Macon, Ga. I remember him stating that our Culpepper ancestor was "definitely from England, not Ireland." He told me he would go "straight to the stacks" in the library for his research. Leon was the one who put together a "Culpepper Family Tree" which was in at least a dozen different sheets and which had to be spread out on the floor to fit the pieces together. It started with John and Agnes Culpepper and went forward with hundreds of names included--a tedious, time-consuming, scholarly work to say the least. Copies, bought for $1.00 each, are in scores of Culpepper homes, but do not bear Leon's name as the author, owing to his modesty and lack on interest in notoriety."

Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia was published in 1951 by Folks Huxford (another Judge). So he probably did copy the story about Irish Culpeppers from the book Melton mentions by Judge William P. Fleming, Crisp County, Georgia: Historical Sketches, which was written in 1932 according to the LDS library catalog.^12,13,14

I, Sampson Culpepper, of the State of Georgia, and County of Laurens, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following to-wit:
     First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Martha Culpepper during her natural life 200 acres of land where I now live; two feather beds and furniture together with all my household and kitchen furniture and
plantation tools of every description and two cows and calves and eight head of hogs.
     ITEM. I give to my beloved son Thomas K. Culpepper all the notes or the obligations which I have paid the money for which was given by him todifferent persons.
     ITEM. I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Mary Smith one feather bed and furniture which she has in possession.
     ITEM. I give and bequeath to my beloved sons John C. and Joel Culpepper all my land and premises with all my household and kitchen furniture and plantation tools and stocks of every kind and description to be equally divided after the death of their mother. I give to my son John Culpepper one bay mare filly to be his property. I give to my son Joel Culpepper one sorrell mare filly to be his property. I give and bequeath to my beloved grandson, Blount Culpepper, one cow and calf or ten dollars in money. (The grandson, Blount, has not otherwise been identified)
     I do hereby nominate and constitute and appoint my son John C. Culpepper and Joel Culpepper sole Executors to this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th, of March 1822.

Sampson's date of birth is based on the known births of his children, making him 26 years old at the birth of his first child.
It is possible that he could have been a bit older, and could have served in the Revolutionary War from North Carolina. There are five extant Revolutionary War pay vouchers in North Carolina for one or perhaps two men named Sampson Culpepper. Any or all of these vouchers could apply to this Sampson. At the moment, this writer has no evidence that he was born prior to our current estimate, 1770. Further research is needed on this. See the article on Sampson Culpepper, uncle of this Sampson, for further details on these vouchers. The signatures on each of these five vouchers need to be compared with this Sampson's signature on his will.
Sampson's middle name "Templeton" is from the Culpepper files of researcher and author Joseph T. Maddox. His source is not known, and has not been independently verified. Current evidence does not show that Sampson used a middle initial in signing official documents.

I am trying to find my gggggrandmother who was named Agnes b. @1770 in NC who resided in Washington Co., GA. I always seem to get thrown to your site so maybe there is some reason for it. I note the sitewith Agnes Culpepper b. 1772 Anson Co., NC(daugher of John Culpepper) and resided in Washington Co., GAwas done in 2004. Do you know or know of anyone who may have new information on her. This Agnes would fit so well to be my ancestress. My gggggrandfather, Elisha Bland, was in Wilkes Co. GA as early as 1798 and received a headright grant in Washington Co., GA 1807. His wife was named, Agnes and Agnes may have been married before marrying Elisha.
In any event, I won't go into anymore details but if you know of anyone I could contact who may have new info on Agnes Culpepper, I would so much appreciate your putting me in touch with them. Thanks for any help.

That David is a known son of John and Aggy, is proven by an entry in his son, David Sneads Culpepper's, family Bible. The original Bible, in the possession of Perry Melton Culpepper, Jr., reads "David Culpepper son of John Culpepper and Agness his wife was born Dec 16 1768." (See the page for David Sneads Culpepper for more information on the bible and a transcription of it.) One can also follow chains of title to land which David Sneads Culpepper owned, which he inherited from his father David Culpepper, land originally granted to John Culpepper. This birth date is from a Bible, said to have originally been the property of David Sneads Culpepper (29 Jul 1814 -- 5 Mar 1886), son of David Culpepper and Elizabeth Hogan. It was given to his youngest daughter, Julia Emma Culpepper Brown, who is thought to have made many of the entries in it. She died childless and at her death it was given to her great-nephew, Samuel Jackson Culpepper, son of Thomas Albert Culpepper. Samuel died on 3 July 1970, in Crisp Co. GA, but the Bible had been given to his youngest son, Leon Raines Culpepper in 1962. On March 1, 1985, Leon, who did not have any natural male children, gave the Bible to his nephew, Perry Melton Culpepper Jr., son of Perry Melton Culpepper. Leon had the Bible sent off and repaired, but the original cover was retained. When the Bible was received by Perry Melton Culpepper Jr., there was a small photograph of Julia Brown taped on the inside leaf in the front. This information provided by Perry Melton Culpepper Jr., March 1985, who sent a photocopy of the Bible pages to Lew Griffin

Biography*

According to the David Sneads Culpepper family Bible, "Agness" was the wife of John Culpepper, and the mother of their son David Culpepper, who was born in 1768. If a biography of Jonathan Yarbrough is accurate, then John was married twice, and his second wife was Mary. John and Mary Culpepper were said to have been the parents of Jonathan Yarbrough's wife, Elizabeth Culpepper, who was probably born in 1779 or a few years thereafter. This writer therefore presumes that Agnes was John's first wife, and the mother of his older children, and that Mary was his second wife, and the mother of John's younger children. Since we do not have exact dates of birth for most of John's children, it is not entirely clear to this writer which of John's children are by which wife.

Biography*

Sampson Culpepper's wife is unknown, but it is clear that he married as he had at least one daughter, who was under the age of ten in the 1820 census of Hancock County, MS. The 1820 census lists another woman in his household aged 16 to 26, so she was born between 1793 and 1804. This was probably Sampson's wife, and she was probably born around 1793. This would make her about 19 years old when Louisa was born. She probably named her daughter Louisa after her mother. She seems to have died soon thereafter as no further children have been found for this marriage.
