Biography* On behalf of Mike, a great-grandson of Roxie, Jennifer Bryant wrote Culpepper Connections on 24 Apr 2012:
"Roxie (Possibly Roxana) Elmira Culpepper, was born June 1, 1879. Family lore has it that the Culpeppers were a well to do family and owned a furniture store in Houston Texas. A young man (William Jeptha Ward) came looking for work and started working there. Apparently they decided to marry, and her family disowned her for it. They married anyway. She died in 1929 and more family lore states that as she lay dying, her family (who had not had any contact that we know of throughout their married life) sent a mattress from the furniture store for her to lay on. Her husband threw it back out the door stating that they didn't want it. She died on January 9, 1929 in Houston, Texas."1
