Rev. Allison Culpepper of Webster Co., GA1

M, (circa 1784 - between October 1854 and 1857)
DNA* DNA testing of descendants of different sons of Rev. Allison Culpepper of Webster Co., GA show that the descendants are related to each other but not to the mainline of Culpeppers. Allison Culpepper was once thought to be a grandson of Joseph Culpepper Sr. (died 1745) of Edgecombe County, NC, and was perhaps a son of John and Agnes Culpepper, or of John's brother, Joseph. However, the DNA testing has shown that their is no paternal connection between Allison and Joseph or to any other line of Culpeppers who have been tested.
The best clues we have to Allison's ancestry are in two 1827 deeds in Jackson Co, GA. In Feb 1827, Allison Culpepper sold his 240 acres in Jackson Co, GA, two separate tracts on Candler's Creek, to Ambrose Yarbrough. Witnesses were Joel Culpepper and Dennis Duncan. The tracts had been granted originally to David Allen (40 acres) and E. Marbury (200 acres). The chain of title from these men to Allison Culpepper has not been found (Jackson Co. Deed Bk. L, both on p. 32). The Joel Culpepper who witnessed Allison's deed was the son of Joseph Culpepper III. Ambrose Yarbrough, who bought Allison's land, was a Baptist minister from Anson Co, NC. He was married to Elizabeth Culpepper, apparent daughter of John Culpepper. But Ambrose was closely associated with the family of Joseph Culpepper III, as well. He was a witness to the 1816 will of Joseph Culpepper III in Jackson Co. GA. Ambrose's daughter Frances married James Culpepper, son of the above Joel Culpepper, son of Joseph III. And it is significant that this 1827 record of Allison was in Jackson Co, where Joseph Culpepper III lived. Malachi Culpepper, the other known son of Joseph, Jr., was also connected to Jackson County. He received Revolutionary War Grants there between 1784 and 1793. (Miscellaneous Records of Jackson Co, GA, by Joseph T. Maddox, and Early Jackson Co Court Records).
Given all of these connections, it is quite possible that there is a maternal Culpepper connection. Or Allison may have been adopted. Future DNA testing may reveal a close connection to another surname, but currently, the likely surname of Allison's father has not been identified.2,3
Name Variation He was also known as Allanson.
Birth*circa 1784 Allison was born at Georgia circa 1784. His ancestry is unknown.
Marriage*circa 1804 He married Mary (?) at Georgia circa 1804.
Miscellaneous*5 October 1808 Allanson Culpepper makes affidavit before William O'Neal attesting to the Hood to Gilbert land sale. on 5 October 1808 at Laurens Co., Georgia.4

lot 131-6 in Gwinnett Co., GA.5
1820 Census*7 August 1820 Allison was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census at Jackson Co., Georgia.6
Deed*6 February 1827 He granted a deed to Ambrose Yarbrough, witnessed by Joel Culpepper of Sumter Co., AL on 6 February 1827 at Jackson Co., Georgia,

Two deeds, same date and page: (1) Allison Culpepper to Ambrose Yarbrough for $100: 40 acres on Candler's Creek, part of a tract granted to David Allen. Wit: Joel Culpepper, Dennis Duncan, and (2) Allison Culpepper to Ambrose Yarbrough for $240: 200 acres on Candler's Creek, part of 1000 acres granted to E. Marbury. Probate*1857 Probate action was taken on Allison's estate, with Reuben T. Culpepper and Benjamin Kemp as executor(s) in 1857 at Webster Co., Georgia
Biography* Allison was born in the 1780's in GA, according to census records, and probably in the early to mid-1780's, since his eldest child was born around 1804. The 1850 census lists his age as 61, which would place his birth around 1788-1789, but that appears to be in error.

In Nov 1822, Allison bought six head of sheep, for $14, from the estate of John Carmichael, deceased. (Jackson Co GA Inferior Court Minutes, 1809-1822).

In Feb 1827, Allison Culpepper sold his 240 acres in Jackson Co, GA, to Ambrose Yarbrough. Witnesses were Joel Culpepper and Dennis Duncan (see below).

That same year, Allison moved to Houston Co, GA, where he appears in a list of church members in June 1827 (History of Peach Co, GA, p. 150). Allison was a Primitive Baptist minister. During 1836-40 he was pastor of Sand Bed Church in Houston County, later known as Lake Baptist Church ("A Land So Dedicated," by B. Smith Hickson). This church was part of the Echeconnee Association of Primitive Baptist Churches. The original charter names as deacons Sampson Culpepper and Allen Sutton; clerk, James Holmes; and other members Joseph and Peltha Culpepper, Jardy Hargrove, Agnes Green, May Joyner, Frances Sutton, Temperance Baskins, William J. and Ann Collins, and Mary Haddock.

Allison was also a member at one time of what is now called the Poplar Springs North Baptist Church, of Dublin, GA. The church was founded by Allison's relative, the Rev. Charles Culpepper. Other early members of this church included Mary, Allison's wife, Sampson Culpepper, Sr., Josiah and Nancy Warren (parents of Rachel Culpepper, Charles Culpepper's wife), Sarah Frances Culpepper Gilbert and her in-laws, John and Elizabeth Gilbert; Peletithe Gilbert Culpepper, wife of Sampson, Sr., and daughter of John and Elizabeth Gilbert, and others. This information is from a letter written in 1991 by R. M. Johnson, then the historian of this church, to Culpepper researcher Charles A. Wynn, Jr. At that time, a 359 page book was available on the history of this church.

According to a book on Stewart County, in 1837, the Indian Dam Academy was founded. Trustees: Anderson Holt, Robert Hatcher, Ezekiel McMichael, Allison Culpepper, Richard A. Black.2
Note*16 December 1902 "A Short History of Sumter County, Formerly a Portion of Lee County"
By Joseph Absolom Cobb
Published December 16,1902 in Americus Daily Press

Shortly after the treaty with the Creek Indians, made at Indian Springs, on the 12th of February, 1825, and was ratified April 22d of the same year by the government, Lee county was laid off and surveyed and divided into districts and lots. The land was drawn for in 1827, when Jacob W. Cobb drew lot No. ___ in what is now known as the 28th district, and the following year he and Avery Wheeler moved to it, it being situated on Line creek, or rather in the forks of Line creek and Boggy branch, now known as the Gipson plantation, with a few other pioneer settlers, viz.: Thomas Key, Thomas Eaton Ward, Isom West, Edmond Nunn, ____ Dorminy, Hardy Pitman, Thomas Kimmey and a few others not now recollected, made the first settlement this side of Flint river.
In the year 1828 Jacob W. Cobb, Avery Wheeler, John W. Cowart, Thomas Key, Edmond Nunn, Isom West, Augustus Nunn and two negroes, Richmond and Judy, his wife, all cropped the Flint river at Shelby's ferry and settled about six miles this side on the waters of Line creek and commenced clearing up the lands just after the Creek Indians had moved across the Chattahoochee river into Alabama. The country was all new except a few little clearings that had been made by the Indians.
In 1829 the country began to be settled up pretty thick. Lovett B. Smith, William Jordan, who is now living, Ebenezer J. Cottle, Joseph H. Daniel, S. Montgomery, William Pilcher, S. Dozier and W. Reed settled in and around what was known as Pond Town. Jacob Little, William Hughes, Solomon Snelgroves, Peter Faust, Anthony Miller, Allison Culpepper and Leven Adams settled in the western part of the county on Kinchafoonee creek. Jacob Little on Muckalee four miles south of Americus at which place Little's bridge is now situated.
`In 1830, Hardy Hay, a man by the name of Dorminy, Elias Hodges, Lamb Hodges, Josiah Suggs and Johnny Suggs settled on what is now known as Philema creek.
Sumter County, Ga. was laid off from Lee county by an act of the legislature in 1831, and the following named persons were chosen to lay off the town: John W. Cowart, Green M. Wheeler, Wright Brady and Jackson Tiner. They selected the lot of land No. 156, in the Twenty-seventh district, on the waters of Muckalee creek and south of Little creek, now known as Town creek. The surveyors pitched their tent near where the Central freight depot now stands. After laying off the streets and court house square, the commissioners met for the purpose of selecting a name for the county site. Each had a name selected and agreed to put all the names in a hat and blindfolded the writer of this article and let the name that I drew out be the one the town should be named, when Lovett B. Smith, one of the commissioners, told the balance of them that he had selected a name that he thought would suit them all, and Americus was the name, which was selected and agreed to by all.
The early settlers of the town were Thomas Harvey, Green M. Wheeler, Wright Brady, Jacob W. Cobb, Gid. Thomas, Jackson Tiner, John Tiner, John Kimmey and others. The first house built was a small pine log house built by Pat Brady, on the lot known as Artesian corner. His stock of goods consisted of a barrel of whiskey, a box of tobacco, a box of chalk pipes, keg of powder, lead in bars and a small lot of gun flints. The next house was built by Jacob W. Cobb, on the corner where the tower now stands - Lamar and Lee streets - which was used for a hotel. The first term of the Superior court ever held in this county convened in this building, presided over by Judge Sturgis, of Columbus. The next house was built by Thomas Harvey, on the lot where now stands the McMath store. In 1834 a contract was let to Thomas Gardner to build a court house - a two-story wooden building - the lower story for a court room and the upper story for a jury room and for offices for county officials.
The first school house built in the town was constructed on Town creek, at the north end of Lee street, just above Elbert Head's fish pond, Thomas Harvey being the first teacher. The first church was built in the old negro cemetery, and the first sermon was preached by Allison Culpepper. The first campmeeting in the county was also at the same place in 1834, conducted by John P. Duncan and John Talley. On the 29th of August, 1834, Robert E. Cobb was born - the first white person born in the town.
After the court house was finished the court room was used for church purposes by the Primitives, represented by Allison Culpepper; Methodist by John Talley; Missionary, by Jonathan Davis, and Universalist by Rev. Shehan. The first Methodist church was built where the new church is now going up.
The first man murdered in the town was one Boasman, said to have been killed by James Little. The second school taught in the town was at the place opposite W.H.C. Dudley's, on the lot known as the Gibons Taylor lot, where a big sycamore tree now stands. The writer was going to school there when that tree was set out by the teacher, Horris Dickson.
The first lawyer in the town was E.R. Brown. The first doctor in the town was Dr. W.M. Hardwick. The first death occurring in the town was Kinchen Morgan, who died in the year 1835.
As this brings me up to the year 1836, I will stop here, and will probably in the future give a history of all the early settlers of the county, together with their customs and peculiarities. I am only writing from memory, and possibly may have made some mistakes.16

.... It appears that the ancestry of Allison Culpepper (Male, #4580) depends on information about the Jones and Marbury families. I am no where near proving it, but I believe Allison's father is a Jones and his mother a Marbury.

The Marbury connection relates to your entry at Culpepper.gen. "The best clues we have to Allison's ancestry are in two 1827 deeds in Jackson Co, GA. Marbury (200 acres)."

I belive the E. Marbury who owned the land was either Emily Marbury, d. 1831; m. James Jones, b. 1769, MD, d. 11 Jan 1801, Washington DC. Which would account for the 67-marker match between Edwin Hilary Jones and I; and perhaps for the unrecorded ownership of the land by Allison.

Or, E. Marbury could be one of her uncles: Eleazer "Eli" Marbury, b. Abt. 1703; or Eusebius Marbury, b. Abt. 1705; m. Catherine UNKNOWN. There does not appear to be another possible E. Marbury candidate. The Marbury family are notorious war profiteers (potentially, the worst in US history) who used their military rank to illegally claim land and make themselves spectacularly rich, with an extremely large quantity of land. It would not appeal to me to be a descendent of war profiteers, but I want to know who Allison's parents are, no matter who they are.

Biography* "William Callaway Edwards Family"
From History of Webster Co. GA, 1980:

On Christmas Day 1895, William Callaway Edwards married Mattie Manelta Culpepper (Patsy) and they established their home on Bear Creek in Webster County, adjoining the farm of her parents, Mark and Anne Culpepper. "Uncle Cal" as he was affectionately known (b. 24 June 1870, d. 14 July 1952) was the son of Van and Clarissa Wiggins Edwards. An interesting story is told that when Cal was only a few days old a tornado destroyed their home and its contents. After the tornado was over the baby could not be found anywhere. When a wardrobe which had been blown over was lifted up, the baby was found snug and safe underneath.

Five children were born to Cal and Patsy: Marcus (b. 8 Oct. 1896), Clara Belle (b. 13 Aug. 1898), Mary Will (b. 7 April 1900), Stanley (b. 28 July 1902) and Gordon (b. 20 Sept. 1904). Their mother died on April 3, 1905, leaving Mr. Edwards with five small children to care for. On May 16, 1909, he married Ola Eugenia Chambers and she became a much loved "step-mother" to these motherless children. This marriage was also blessed with five children: Gene (b. 3 Feb. 1910), Arnold (b. 24 Jan. 1913), Emily (22 April 1914), Evelyn (b. 11 Feb. 1917) and Guy (b. 16 July 1921).

The Edwards family moved to Chambliss during 1904 where they operated a small farm and a grocery store. This was known as the Mt. Olive community and there was a very active church and school there. The school was consolidated with the Weston School around 1925. "Uncle Cal's Store" was the center of activity for the entire community during the week, and the churches, Mr. Olive Methodist and Turkey Creek Primitive Baptist, was the focal point on Sunday.

At this time Webster County is not home for any of the Edwards children except Mary Will who married Cecil Alston and her home is in the Centerpoint Community, but she is a resident of the Magnolia Manor Nursing Home in Americus. They have three children: Sarah Goodwin, Beatrice Wheeler and Cecil Will Alston. Marcus is married to Mary Reddick and they have one child, Jack, and they all live in Dawson. Clara Belle also lives in Dawson. She has devoted her life to teaching. having spent over forty years in the school rooms of Georgia. Stanley married Margaret Fitzpatrick and he died on September 18, 1974. Gordon married Elsie Hill and they have one son, Bill, who lives in Phenix City, Alabama. Gordon died September 28, 1975. Gene (unmarried) died September 3, 1955. Arnold is married to Bonnie McDonald and they have two daughters: Mrs. Robert Wells (Linda) and Mrs. Robert Kinney (Lois). They all live in Albany. Emily is married to Henry Trussell. They live in Cuthbert and have one son, Henry III, who lives in Mobile, Alabama. Evelyn lived only one year, dying April 24, 1918. Guy gave his life for his country during World War II. His plane was shot down on June 14, 1944. None of the crew were ever heard from and they were all declared dead as of that date.
