Note*August 2015 From Jim Mittica:

Eleanor A. “Ellen” Gresham (02 Aug 1844-aft 1920). Ellen, of Chambers County, Alabama, was first married to my great grandfather, James Lawrence Prather (29 May 1842-15 Dec 1892) on 07 Sep 1865. After surviving the Civil War as a Confederate cavalryman, James Lawrence Prather died in Chambers County, AL after having been bitten by a rabid dog. Ellen survived on a Confederate widow’s pension. The records of her pension stop in 1915. There is a record of an Ellen Prather marrying E. G. Culpepper on 01 Apr 1915 in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama.... I believe this to be my great grandmother. As indicated on your site, U. S. Census records for 1920 show E. G. and Ellen Culpeper residing in an Alms House in Opelika. Both were listed as invalids.

I have been so far unable to locate any records of the deaths of Early Greathouse Culpepper or Ellen Gresham Prather Culpepper. It is apparent they were living in Opelika on 25 Jan 1920 when the census was enumerated but as to any records of them after that date, I am at a loss.11

Biography* From Barbara Kuhn Winslett, a granddaughter of Cordelia Koone, Jan 2000:
My grandmother, Cordelia Ann Culpepper Koone is buried at Bethany Baptist Church in Pine Mountain, Ga. She married James Franklin Koone on Dec. 24, 1885 in Harris County, Ga. They were the parents of my father Alvis Lloyd Koone (Kuhn).
I have a copy of a marriage license of my father's first marriage. It has him listed as Alvis Lloyd Koone of Columbus, Ga married to Beatrice Thomas. I do not have a record of my father's marriage to Sybil Aleene Dison, my mother. Sometime after his marriage with Beatrice and the time he married my mother he changed the spelling of his name from Koone to Kuhn.
James Franklin Koone was born in 1865 and died on Apr. 10, 1937. His father was Marion Koone was born in 1837 in South Carolina and died on Apr. 05, 1910. Marion's father was George William Koon Jr. was born in Mar. 17, 1802 and died on July 11, 1881. George married Nancy Abney. Nancy was born in Jun. 18, 1802 and died on Aug. 21, 1881.

The following is from Deborah Slaton, daughter of Barbara Lockard, Jan 2005:
These are the notes I found in Mom's files so far about Cordelia:
          Cordelia's children's names are:
               Minnie Koon - Mrs. Sykes
Maybelle Koon - Mrs. Sam Satterwhite
Clara Koon - lived in LaGrange, Georgia
               Ernest Koon
               Clinton Koon
               Alvis Lloyd Koon
"Aunt Delia" was what the Thompson girls called her. Molly Ledbetter and daughter, Dora, lived with sister "Delia" after the death of Molly's husband. One son died in Columbus, but I don't know which one. Cordelia Culpepper Koone and her family are buried in the new section of Bethany Baptist Cemetery, Pine Mountain, Harris County, Georgia. Ernest Koone, her son, told me he had new headstones erected for them.
Ernest Koon ran a nursery (plants) in Harris County. He was living in 1979, and I talked to him about the Culpeppers. He had everything written down, and there was no more than I knew. I have always wished I had asked him about the other families (Hammack - Ledbetter - DeLoach, etc.)

Samantha Jane Koone White, the youngest daughter of Ernest's son Henry and his former wife Carol, wrote in Jun 2006, that she is also interested in this line.5,6,8

Biography* Charles T. Culpepper was a Baptist preacher throughout central and south Alabama. Minnie, of course for those times, took care of the house. My mother told of how angry she would get as he sat on the porch singing hymns as Minnie carried buckets of water for household use. I never met him and have little memory of her and therefore will not judge the relationship they had. We called them Grandmother and Grandfather Culpepper and it is sad that we never knew the people they were. I hope I remember that in relating to my grandchildren. As you may have noticed, we Culpeppers tend to resemble one another. I stopped in Notasulga several years ago at the house I last remembered my Aunt Minnie living in and knocked on the door. No one was home but a door opened across the street and woman walked my way saying "I don't know who you are but I know we're related! You're a Culpepper." She turned out to be a cousin I had never met. [from Justin (Jeanne Culpepper) Christie]
