James Franklin Koone1,2
M, (1865 - 10 April 1937)
Father | Marion Koone1 (1837 - 5 Apr 1910) |
Birth* | 1865 | James was born in 1865.2 |
Marriage* | 24 December 1885 | He married Cordelia Ann Culpepper at Harris Co., Georgia, on 24 December 1885.2,1 |
Death* | 10 April 1937 | He died on 10 April 1937.2 |
Burial* | circa 12 April 1937 | His body was interred circa 12 April 1937 at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery, Pine Mountain, Troup Co., Georgia.2 |
Biography* | From Barbara Kuhn Winslett, a granddaughter of Cordelia Koone, Jan 2000: My grandmother, Cordelia Ann Culpepper Koone is buried at Bethany Baptist Church in Pine Mountain, Ga. She married James Franklin Koone on Dec. 24, 1885 in Harris County, Ga. They were the parents of my father Alvis Lloyd Koone (Kuhn). I have a copy of a marriage license of my father's first marriage. It has him listed as Alvis Lloyd Koone of Columbus, Ga married to Beatrice Thomas. I do not have a record of my father's marriage to Sybil Aleene Dison, my mother. Sometime after his marriage with Beatrice and the time he married my mother he changed the spelling of his name from Koone to Kuhn. James Franklin Koone was born in 1865 and died on Apr. 10, 1937. His father was Marion Koone was born in 1837 in South Carolina and died on Apr. 05, 1910. Marion's father was George William Koon Jr. was born in Mar. 17, 1802 and died on July 11, 1881. George married Nancy Abney. Nancy was born in Jun. 18, 1802 and died on Aug. 21, 1881. The following is from Deborah Slaton, daughter of Barbara Lockard, Jan 2005: These are the notes I found in Mom's files so far about Cordelia: Cordelia's children's names are: Minnie Koon - Mrs. Sykes Maybelle Koon - Mrs. Sam Satterwhite Clara Koon - lived in LaGrange, Georgia Ernest Koon Clinton Koon Alvis Lloyd Koon "Aunt Delia" was what the Thompson girls called her. Molly Ledbetter and daughter, Dora, lived with sister "Delia" after the death of Molly's husband. One son died in Columbus, but I don't know which one. Cordelia Culpepper Koone and her family are buried in the new section of Bethany Baptist Cemetery, Pine Mountain, Harris County, Georgia. Ernest Koone, her son, told me he had new headstones erected for them. Ernest Koon ran a nursery (plants) in Harris County. He was living in 1979, and I talked to him about the Culpeppers. He had everything written down, and there was no more than I knew. I have always wished I had asked him about the other families (Hammack - Ledbetter - DeLoach, etc.) Samantha Jane Koone White, the youngest daughter of Ernest's son Henry and his former wife Carol, wrote in Jun 2006, that she is also interested in this line.1,3,4 |

1850 Census* | 1 June 1850 | Jane was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census on 1 June 1850 at Richmond Co., Georgia.6 |
Research note* | Robert Culpepper apparently died before 1830 as his wife Jane appears as family head in the 1830 census, and his orphans were winners in the 1832 Georgia Gold Lottery. Since the 1840 and 1850 censuses show children in Jane's household who were born after 1830 (Mary Ann, Julia Ann, and David P.), it is not clear who their parents are. It is possible that Jane was the mother and the father was someone to whom she was not married. Or, these may be orphan children from another Culpepper family. Since the 1850 census does not state relationships, other records are needed to solve this mystery. If you can help shed light on this, please contact Warren Culpepper.7 |

Short and Samuel W. Bailey post $4,000 bond for Nancy Culpepper to be administrator of the estate of W. Walter Culpepper, dec’d.10 |
(Witness) Research note | Robert Culpepper apparently died before 1830 as his wife Jane appears as family head in the 1830 census, and his orphans were winners in the 1832 Georgia Gold Lottery. If you can help shed light on this, please contact Warren Culpepper.11 |

At the same time, their father changed his last name and that of the boys to Hager, reversing a family name change that had been made 50 years earlier by Cassandra Culpepper.11 |
Note* | Susan Van Ord wrote on 23 Aug 2007: "I'm a descendent of Cassandra Culpepper, b. Abt 1824 in Franklin Co., GA (I think). Her husband, Thomas F. Hager, went to fight in the Mexican War (1846-47). He was also, by chance, one of the '49ers who walked to California, found nothing and walked back to GA. Anyway, he didn't ever come back from the war. She said he hadn't been kill in the war -- he just didn't want to come back. So she went back to using her maiden name! She had a son named Andrew Culpepper Hager, b. 1853 in GA, d. 19 May 1890 -- probably in Augusta, Richmond, GA. His son, my grandfather, was William Garland Culpepper, but his surname at birth was Hager. Grampa's brother, James Monroe Culpepper, killed a man and Grampa and all his siblings changed their last name to Culpepper until Grampa was able to get Uncle Jim out of the country. Then Grampa went back to "Hager" as did most of the rest of his siblings. The girls used Culpepper until they married.12 |
