William Culpepper

M, (1845 - 9 October 1882)
FatherAccountis Culpepper (c 1804 - bt 1858 - 1860)
MotherSusan (?) (c 1820 - )
DNA* William has been proven by DNA and genealogical research to be a descendant of Thomas Culpepper, who is a son of Henry Culpepper, Jr. and grandson Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, VA.
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Culpeper.
Birth*1845 William was born at North Carolina in 1845.
(Household member) 1850 Census1 June 1850 Susan, William, Joshua, Penelope and Margaret listed as a household member living with Accountis Culpepper on the 1850 Census on 1 June 1850 at Camden Co., North Carolina.1
Civil War*between 1863 and 1865 He served in the War Between the States between 1863 and 1865

William Culpepper of Camden County, North Carolina enlisted as a private in Company B of the 21st Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers on October 29, 1863. This was the Union force occupying Camden County at the time. William was 19 years old and the enlistment paper states that he was "a refugee from North Carolina who came into our lines to escape imprisonment by a band of Confederate guerillas." He spent the rest of the war apparently building trenches and such, and received a medical discharge on May 30, 1865. Interestingly enough, his pension and later the United States Army's widow's pension was the only thing that kept his family out of poverty in those desperate times.2
Marriage*27 March 1870 He married Virginia Marinetta Dunbar at Newland Twp, Pasquotank Co., North Carolina, on 27 March 1870.3
1870 Census*1 June 1870 He was enumerated in the US Census of 1870 at Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., North Carolina.4
1880 Census*1 June 1880 William was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census at Providence, Pasquotank Co., North Carolina.5
Death*9 October 1882 He died at Providence Twp., Pasquotank Co., North Carolina, on 9 October 1882.6
Burial*10 October 1882 His body was interred on 10 October 1882 at private cemetery north of, Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., North Carolina. If you travel on US-17 North from Elizabeth City, NC, turn right on Culpepper Lane into what is now Pine Lakes subdivision. Culpepper Lane veers right on Quail Run Road. Take an immediate left on Hunter's Trail West. At the end of this street you will find a heavily wooded lot. The graves and tombstones of William Culpepper (1845 - 9 Oct 1882) and his wife, Virginia M. Dunbar (27 Nov 1856 - 14 Feb 1921) are found on this lot. This was once farmland and is close to the Pasquotank River. Culpepper Lane is presumably named for this branch of the Culpepper family.
The tombstone inscriptions are:
WM. CULPEPPER, CO. B., 21ST CONN. INF.
VIRGINIA M. CULPEPPER, Born Nov. 27, 1856, Died Feb. 14, 1921.

Lydia Culpepper

F, (say 1760 - 17 September 1839)
FatherJeremiah Culpepper of Norfolk Co., VA (c 1731 - a 1761)
Mother(?) (?) (s 1731 - )
Birth*say 1760 Lydia was born at Norfolk Co., Virginia, say 1760.
Marriage*circa 1780 She married Lovick Pierce at Martin Co., North Carolina, circa 1780. Children: Reddick, Lovick II, Everette, three daughters.1

Married Namecirca 1780  As of circa 1780, her married name was Pierce.
Death*17 September 1839 She died at Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., Georgia, on 17 September 1839.
Biography*2003 Lydia's ancestry is currently unproven, but this writer speculates that she may be the daughter of Jeremiah Culpepper, because of her husband's association in deeds with Henry Culpepper, another suspected son of Jeremiah's. The papers at Emory University, referenced here in a separate note, have not yet been reviewed, but may hold clues or proof.2

Note*22 May 2003 From Walker Pierce, Austin, TX, 22 May 2003:
Reddick and Lovick II were born in the Halifax District of Martin County, North Carolina on 9-26-1782 and 3-24-1785, respectively.

Their parents Lovick (b. 1760-1) and Lydia Culpepper Pierce evidently moved the family in 1790 to the Barnwell District of South Carolina, as the family was enumerated twice in the first Census of the United States, once in each of the Carolinas. (South Carolina was the last colony to complete its census, and had been granted a 9 month extension, during which time the family had relocated.)

Lovick, Sr claimed and surveyed 657 acres on Tinker's Creek in the Barnwell District of South Carolina, and by September 3, 1793 had cleared and cultivated enough of this land to record and file the deed. This is approximately 25 miles east of present-day Augusta, Georgia. While they lived on Tinker's Creek, four daughters were born.

He sold 150 acres of the land in 1801 and the rest in 1804, moving to Baldwin County, Georgia with Lydia and their youngest children, Sarah, Polly, Martha, Mary and Susan. A third son, Everette Hamilton Pierce, was born in 1809 in Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., Georgia. Later two more daughters were born, Ann and Lydia.

(Reddick and Lovick II did not remove to Georgia in 1804 with the rest of the family, instead remaining in South Carolina with their mother's sister. That same year they joined the Methodist Church and both became itinerant ministers on January 1, 1805 at the Methodist conference at Charleston.)

Margie Butler, on 28 Aug 2003, wrote: "I ran across information on the Culpepper family, contained in the Special Collections, Robert W. Woodruff Library, Emory University... I have cut and pasted information from the library website which will give additional information on the collection at Emory."

Hello Lew,

I see you are the contact for this CULPEPPER and related families website for updates and adding to the tree, etc....I've been researching my CULPEPPER branches and am a descendant of Lydia (nee CULPEPPER) PIERCE. She married Philip LovickPIERCE. I see the website has a lot of blanks about Lydia and her descendants and ancestors. It's looks like there is split opinion as to who her parents may be.http://www.culpepperconnections.com/ss/p490.htm This is the page from the CULPEPPER website where I found your email. This page shows her father maybe as Jeremiah CULPEPPER However, in the book The Pierces and Their Posterity by Clara Waldron I found at the Georgia State Archives it says "Lydia CULPEPPER daughter of Daniel CULPEPPER II and Anise LEWELLING, Lydia born 1764 in prob. Norfolk, VA and died Sep 17, 1839 Milledgeville, Baldwin Co.,GA." So I'm not sure what to think about this ancestry of hers. Confusing. I can't figure out who Daniel is on this tree.

The book "The Pierces and Their Posterity" I viewed at the Georgia State Archives on page 72 shows Lovick PIERCE and wife Lydia attending the Milledgeville Methodist Church from 1811-12.

I descend from Lydia's son Everett Hamilton PIERCE b 1809 in Baldwin Co.,GA and died about 1857 probably in Milledgeville, GA. He married Emily Frances MULLINS born about 1826 Georgia and died about 1855 around Milledgeville, GA. Everette and wife Mary Frances MULLINS were listed in my Grandmother's Bible. I walked the Old Milledgeville Cemetery in Milledgeville, GA and could never find a stone for either of them. I also found a book with the listings of those buried there and no listing there as well. I'm guessing maybe I need to try some of the church cemetery's up there next probably the Methodist church.
However I was able to find quite a bit about Everett at the GA State Archives on his career. There is a lot I have to follow up on about him though. In a card catalog drawer at the archives in card catalog 104 "Surveyor General, Jun 30 1828- Nov 10, 1828, Baldwin Co.,Justice of Inferior Court. I need to look into that one further but this was what was on the card.
In the source Milledgeville Newspaper Clippings by Tad Evans, Vol 12, p. 391 at the Georgia State Archives-Morrow, GA. "Everett Hamilton Pierce, Secretary, Jan 21, 1830, appointed colonel-list military appointed notice, clippings from Southern Recorder Vol XII 1867-1872"
Everett is listed as E.H. PIERCE in 1830 Census, head of house, living in Baldwin Co.,GA.

In 1837 in the source The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Georgia, 1837 Philip T. Schley of Lodge: Columbian No. 28 Secretary.: Everett H PIERCE of Lodge: Benevolent No. 6 That was on a card in one of the catalog drawers as well.

Everett is in the Aug 7, 1850 US Federal Census in Milledgeville, GA listed as E.H. PIERCE b Georgia, 41 years old, occupation: clerk, married, living with a John MORRIS 30.

I was able to find the marriage certificate for Everett and wife Emily Frances MULLINS as well as Indexing Batch No M71204-2,System Origin; Georgia-EAsy,Source Film No. 415154 on the website beta.familysearch.org. The marriage is also listed in the Baldwin Co.,Marriage Book: 1835-1852 on-line in Georgia's Virtual Vault. The newspaper Federal Union I found this little bit "December 9, 1851 Federal Union Married-On the 20th of Nov.,by the Rev. S.G. Daniel, Mr. EVERETT H. PIERCE of Baldwin Co., to Miss EMILY F. MULLINS of Hancock Co..

I found the obit of of Everett and Emily Frances oldest daughter Mary Frances (nee PIERCE) BABB and her burial stone in the cemetery in Black Springs Cemetery when I visited that area in 2010 Mary Frances was born Feb 6, 1853 in Hancock Co.,GA and died in Macon, GA on Oct 7, 1931. She married Charles BABB. She had nine children.

In Milledgeville, GA Newspaper Clippings (Southern Recorder) Vol IX, 1853-1857 on page 38 and 39 it reads " Tues May 7, 1853, Whig Reorganization,at a meeting of the Whig party of Baldwin Co., at Milledgeville on the 7th instant the following were present....(there were 13 listed and one was Everett H. PIERCE.

Everett and wife Emily Frances had a second daughter they named Lydia Elizabeth (nee PIERCE) MOYE born Feb 28, 1855 in Hancock, GA and died Nov 1, 1889 in Devereux, GA. Information on her marriage found here: LDS family search: Source:Georgia Marriages, 1808-1967, Lydia E. PIERCE, Indexing Project # M71301-2,System Origin:Georgia-easy, film # 222075,Lidia (misspelled)same marriage Index # M71301-1 ,film # 222074. She was married to John Wells MOYE (his 2nd wife) on Jan 5, 1875 in Hancock Co.,GA. I found her large elaborate headstone n the church cemetery that listed the names of her parents and her husband at the Island Creek Cemetery in Devereaux, GA. This was my Great Great Grandmother. I also have her obit and her photo and her husband John Wells MOYE photo and obit and the obit of his first wife. He was married three times and it appears the first two wives might have died as a result of childbirth. Lydia (nee PIERCE) MOYE died a couple of months after the birth of her last child. Lydia (nee PIERCE) and John had seven children. I descend from their son Virgil Scott MOYE who married Jennie Eve DAVIS and then their daughter Lydia Lee (nee MOYE) WOLLAM (my grandmother) who married Kermit WOLLAM. John MOYE had two babies that died as infants with his first wife Virginia WOOD as well. He didn't have any children with his third wife Cornelia BLOUNT but she ended up raising his seven children he had with Lydia his second wife. My grandmother had Lydia (nee PIERCE) MOYE and John MOYE listed in her Bible. As you can see there are a lot of Lydia's and it can get confusing.

In a book at the Georgia State Archives called Life and Times of George Foster PIERCE..with His Sketch of Lovick PIERCE D.D.his Father, by George G. Smith.with Introd by Atticus G. Haywood. # BX8495.P54356 page 7 "Everett PIerce "the youngest brother..was a Secretary in the Executive Department of the State of Georgia, under Troup, Forsyth and Gilmer"

It appears that Everett Hamilton PIERCE and wife Emily Frances (nee MULLINS) died young and left their two young daughters under 5 years of age orphaned. I've never been able to find the girls in the 1860 or 1870 census so I don't know who they went to live with.

Maybe adding this info to the tree will get some more activity going on Lydia (nee CULPEPPER) PIERCE branches if this is added to the CULPEPPER CONNECTIONS website. And hopefully maybe we can figure out who her parents are either Jeremiah's CULPEPPER line or Daniel CULPEPPER. If you have any ideas let me know. Thanks for the help in advance.

                                                     Best Regards,
                                                     Lydia Nelson Friedland.3

Lovick Pierce

M, (circa 1761 - 1821)
FatherPhillip Pierce (s 1750 - )
MotherMartha Andrews (s 1733 - )
Birth*circa 1761 Lovick was born at Halifax Co., North Carolina, circa 1761.
Marriage*circa 1780 He married Lydia Culpepper at Martin Co., North Carolina, circa 1780. Children: Reddick, Lovick II, Everette, three daughters.1

Death*1821 He died at Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., Georgia, in 1821.
