Biography* | | Lawrence Decatur Chisenhall (1856-1921), one of five children of William Delaney Chisenhall and Sallie Reed of Alabama, and Virginia Ann Culpepper (1855-1927), one of 17 children of John Tyler Culpepper and Melvina Baker from Virginia, later Alabama, were married in Alabama in the middle 1870's, and as bride and groom traveled by train to Dallas, Texas. They were met there by friends, and went by horse and wagon to Marystown, Texas which was a township about seven miles south of Burleson. There they settled on 40 acres with a mule and began farming. Along with farming, Lawrence Chisenhall later built and operated a cotton gin in Marystown. There were ten children born from this union: Grace, Walter Delaney, Martin Brown, Marble Gertrude, Tollie Myrtle, Vera Mae, Sallie Lee, Willie Josephine, Lawrence Fletcher, and Mary Adlai (Cricket was her nickname, and the name she was always known by). The Chisenhalls were busy people. The family moved to Burleson in 1900 where the six younger children attended Burleson School. They bought a 230 acre farm about two miles south of Burleson which remains in the family. Part of this land was sold to the City of Burleson for a park which bears the Chisenhall name. The Chisenhalls also purchased land and built a home around 1901 at the corner of Bransom and Renfro Streets. That home was lived in for two separate periods of several years each by two of the grandsons, Winston Francis Taylor and his family, and Jack Chisenhall Taylor and his family. In 1964 it was moved to make room for the Burleson Post Office, and still is being lived in at 225 South Warren. In the early 1900's Lawrence Chisenhall founded a flour mill in Burleson, and called it Powder Puff Flour. This does seem an appropriate name since seven of their ten children were girls! Listed below are the ten Chisenhall children and those that they married: Grace married George Durham from Marystown; Walter D. married Mattie from Baird, TX; Martin B. married Edna Gordon from Burleson; Mable married James J. Walker from the Burleson-Everman area; Tollie married Charles Calhoun Taylor from Burleson; Vera married Claude W. Norton from Fort Worth; Sallie died at a young age; Willie married J. Grover Hackney from Burleson; Fletcher married Neltz Coleman from Ardmore, OK; "Cricket" married John D. Watkins from Tacoma, WA. At this writing, 1980, Willie Chisenhall Hackney is living and healthy in her 91st year, as well as John D. Watkins, "Cricket's" husband, who is in his 88th year. Shirley Taylor Miles. |

Susannah Culpepper

Married Name | 6 February 1837 | As of 6 February 1837, her married name was Branton. |
Death* | 15 April 1875 | She died at Homer, Angelina Co., Texas, on 15 April 1875. |
Biography* | | The following is from Beth Hillis of Magnolia TX (22 Jun 1996): Susannah married Arnold Branton, a son of Maturin Branton of Whiteville, Columbus Co. NC. Arnold left NC with an older brother, Ephraim Branton and his wife, Susannah Tatum, after the 1830 census, arriving in MS around 1834. An older brother, Reddick Branton, had left NC several years earlier and settled in MS. Arnold apparantly met and married Susannah Culpepper there in February of 1837 - they sold some land in July of 1838, then apparantly continued on their westward journey. Some of the Branton boys settled in Dale Co. AL with their families, but Reddick, Arnold and Ephraim continued west. Reddick died after 1840 and before 1850 in Lawrence Co. MS. Arnold and Ephraim were in Liberty, Ouichita Co. AR by 1845 as indicated by tax records. Ephraim stayed in Liberty, Ouichita Co. AR. where he died in 1857. Arnold and Susannah settled in Homer, Angelina Co., TX around 1850. Records indicated that they lived there until at least, 1870. I have not found any records of either of them after the 1870 census, nor have I found a grave site for either one of them. The family bible states that Susannah C. Branton died in 1875 - no mention of her husband, Arnold. Arnold served as a Judge and also Postmaster for the town of Homer, TX for many years, as well as being a farmer. His brother, Reddick, who lived in Lawrence Co. MS, was also a judge as I found many documents that had been recorded in that county with his name affixed thereon as the Judge. All records I have found on the Brantons in NC indicated that they were all very active in the local politics and matters in the court. They left a nice paper trail in NC. |

Henry Bailey Oliver
M, (24 March 1823 - 20 April 1906)
Name Variation | | He was also known as Bailey Oliver. |
Birth* | 24 March 1823 | Henry was born at North Carolina on 24 March 1823. |
Marriage* | circa 1855 | He married Cynthia Culpepper at Mississippi circa 1855. |
Death* | 20 April 1906 | He died at Attala Co., Mississippi, on 20 April 1906 at age 83. |
Burial* | say 22 April 1906 | His body was interred say 22 April 1906 at Jerusalem Cemetery, Attala Co., Mississippi. |
Biography* | | From Peggy Gresham, March 2004: "My great grandfather, Bailey Oliver married Syntha Susie Culpepper, daughter of Benjamin R. Culpepper and Mary Mason. Bailey Oliver was married in Washington Cty. NC to Elizabeth Furlough/Furlaugh and had a son Alexander Bailey Oliver and a daughter Mary Jane Oliver (my great grandmother). Bailey's first wife died and he migrated to Mississippi where he married Syntha Susie Culpepper and had 3 sons, William Nathan, Henry Daniel, and James W. Oliver (James died at the age of 3). After Syntha's death in 1885, Bailey married Mary Elizabeth Sartin Stephens and they had one daughter Daisy Viola Oliver.
The R in Benjamin, Syntha Susie, and the Henry Bailey Oliver were given to me by family. However, in all of my researching I have only found Benjamin Culpepper (with no middle initial), Syntha S. and Bailey Oliver .... Syntha S. tombstone only gives Syntha S. wife of B. Oliver. His tombstone only gives Bailey Oliver. I did not find Benjamin Culpepper's tombstone but have been told that he is buried in Jerusaleum Cemetery also. As for marriage license for Bailey's three wives, I have not been able to find them. The courhouses in NC burned and I have found no record nor have I found any records in Mississippi. At the Attala courthouse they told me many of their records had burned also. I do have notes and letters from many of the Olivers to Mary Jane. I know that my grandmother, Mary Jane Oliver Sparkman was rasied by her grandparents in NC until about 1868 when Bailey went back to NC to get her and her brother, Alexander Bailey Oliver. They were in the 1870 census of Attala County (Mary Jane was on the 1860 census with her grandparents, Joseph and Arphia/Arphy Furlough/Furlaugh. Her brother Alexander Bailey was in Nathan Oliver's household (Bailey's brother)."1 |

Biography* | | The country surrounding Nile, in Southeast Attala, is quite new and fresh, when compared with many other portions of the county. In traveling through this community, the observer will notice the absence of old, worn-out broomsedge fields, but instead thereof, a freshness which give the country the appearance of very recent settlement; for there are large quantities of splendid farming lands in this section, still covered with virgin forest, only awaiting the woodsman's axe to convert them to splendid farms. Very few of the settlers of fifty years ago in the community are now living. John L. Atkinson, BaileyOliver, William Culpepper, and Thomas J. Hanna are some of the old settlers still here. Of these, William Culpepper is one of the few survivors of that gallant company of "Minute Men," which constituted the first company that left Attala in 1861 for the Confederate war. Mr. Culpepper fought through the entire war, in the Army of Virginia, and bears evidence of his service in the shape of wounds received in battle. He lives a quiet unostentatious life, on his little farm commanding the love and respect to the surrounding community for 'Uncle Bill" as he is familiarly known, is a welcome visitor everywhere in the neighborhood, and even the little children are always glad to see and welcome him, in their midst.
