Father | Daniel Culpepper Jr. (c 1756 - b 20 May 1811) |
Mother | Mary (?) (c 1753 - ) |
Extinct Surname?* | The family branch headed by John Culpepper of Calvert Co., MD is believed to have no living male descendants with the Culpepper surname. If you know otherwise, please contact Lew Griffin using the link at the bottom of this page.
Birth* | circa 1776 | John was born at Norfolk Co., Virginia, circa 1776. |

(Heir) Will | 25 April 1811 | Daniel, John, Asa, Mary, Martha and Marina named as heir(s) in the will of Daniel Culpepper Jr. at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 25 April 1811.2 |
Employment* | John was apparently a cooper, as he inherited his father's cooper's tools.
War of 1812* | between 1813 and 1814 | He and Thomas Culpepper of Calvert Co., MD between 1813 and 1814 served in the War of 1812 in the Maryland Militia, 31st Regiment (Hodgkin's and Taney's).3 |
Research note* | That John Culpepper of Calvert Co., MD was the son of Daniel Culpepper Jr. [ID# 30] is speculative. Since John Culpepper of Calvert Co., MD and Thomas Culpepper of Calvert Co., MD both (a) lived in the same county, (b) served in the same regiment of the Maryland Militia, and (c) were of similar ages, they could be brothers. However, Daniel, the presumed father of John, mentions son John, but not Thomas in his will of 1811. It is also possible that John and/or Thomas are descendants of John Culpepper of Maryland Records in Calvert Co. MD should be checked. Apparently, the FHL in SLC does not have much that would help. Death* | before 1830 | He died at Norfolk Co., Virginia, before 1830. |
Biography* | Asa first appears in Norfolk County Personal Property Tax Lists in 1805. He was apparently a shoemaker, as he inherited his father Daniel's shoemaking tools in 1811. In Jul 1813, Asa bought 16 acres from Enoch Daley and wife Mary, for $50. Since he named a son Enoch, this may have been his wife's parents. The land was adjacent to the heirs of William Harper, the heirs of Willoughby Creekmur, and the heirs of Joshua Creekmur. Witnesses were Daniel Foreman, Stephen Creekmur, and John Daley (Norfolk Co VA Deed Bk 46, p.96). In September 1824, Asa "of St. Brides Parish" gave various bequests to his two children, Enoch and Betsey, "for good will and affection." He gave all his land to Enoch (Deed Bk. 51, p.353). In February 1825, Asa and wife Rebecca sold a tract of land to John Daily for $30. The land had belonged to Frederick Daily, deceased, an orphan of Enoch Daily, deceased (Deed Bk 52, p.267). Asa may have died soon thereafter, as he is not on the 1830 census in Norfolk County.
