Noonday couple still in love after more than 75 years

By Jacque Hilburn, Feature Writer

It cost Bob Culpepper, 97, his last dime to claim his sweetheart and soulmate.

"I don't know how to say it, I just fell pretty deep for her," he said softly. "I gave the preacher who was marrying us the last dime I had. I didn't think much about it, I was very excited to marry this thing."

Recalling their long ago, two-year courtship, Thelma Culpepper, 93, said, "We met on a blind date. I don't know who fell for who first, we just fell for each other. And we've been partners ever since."

It's been almost 76 years since the couple wed. Both attribute hard work and clean living to keeping their enduring relationship fresh and alive.

Much of their success seems also to stem from attitude - there's not much they won't tackle.

He still mows the lawn, she still weeds.

They both cook, garden and play a mean game of dominoes.

As they say in the movies, it's a wonderful life.

"We're still going," Culpepper said, eyes flashing. "My going got tough, but I'm still going."

YOUNG LOVE
As Valentine's Day approaches, the couple, their hair glistening white, paused to reflect on their lives and relationship, and share a few words of advice for long-lasting love.

They recommend good communication, honesty and commitment to keeping a marriage strong, in good times and bad.

"Life wasn't always a bed of roses, but we survived," Mrs. Culpepper said.

The couple married Aug. 24, 1931 as the nation was gripped by the Great Depression.

He was 21, she was 18.

"We had a real hard life," Mrs. Culpepper said from their Noonday home of almost 40 years. "We didn't have a dime. Nobody had any money in those days."

It was a no-frills union - there was no money for a wedding or a honeymoon or a place to hang their hats.

"We stayed at my aunt's house," Culpepper said. "We were married on a Monday and by Thursday, we started picking cotton."

Ten months later, they became parents.

"After we married, I worked like he did in the field and helped him any way I could," Mrs. Culpepper said, grasping her husband's weathered hand. "We're best friends."

They eventually scraped up enough money to purchase a little land, a few head of cattle and a shell of a house.

It had no electricity, water or sewer, but it became home.

They sweltered in the summer and shivered in the winter. And along the way, they added a second child.

The Culpeppers said they stuck together through hard times, pursuing a variety of jobs to care for their growing family.

He farmed, hauled ice, delivered groceries, hauled lumber, drove a bus and cut hair.

She churned butter, sewed clothes and juggled kids.

"He used to go to town on Saturday and take what butter I would make," Mrs. Culpepper said. "He would hook up two mules and it would take him all day to get to Tyler and back."

When he arrived, there would be a line of townspeople waiting to buy it, Culpepper said.

The family survived on mostly homegrown early peas and sweet potatoes, and cornbread drenched in Mrs. Culpepper's rich creamy butter.

"We still eat pretty much what we want," Mrs. Culpepper said. "He still loves sweet potatoes, but I don't like the butter they make now. It's not real."

As the years passed, the couple said they didn't always agree.

"We never had a fight, but we sometimes argued," Mrs. Culpepper said. "No couple gets along perfect all the time. My advice to couples is to stay together. If you separate, you'll never get back together, I think. I could have left a couple of times, but didn't. We just talked it out and worked it out."

He added, "You should try to make a living and do things right."

CHANGING TIMES
By 1968, the couple purchased their dream home, a modest Ranch complete with plumbing, located just across the field from the farmhouse.

"It even had air conditioning in it," Mrs. Culpepper said. "We splurged a little. We really thought we had made it, and I guess we did in a sense."

Culpepper eventually opened a small barber shop beside his home and continued cutting hair until the age of 80.

They still live in that cherished house, the walls adorned with family pictures and mementos.

In the corner of the kitchen sits the old butter churn.

"We didn't have a lot of money, but what we did have really blessed our lives," Mrs. Culpepper said.

While the house hasn't changed much, the area around them has.

Texas Highway 155 divides the pastureland they used to farm, and new brick homes dot the hilly landscape behind their home.

Other things in their lives seem to stay the same.

Mr. Culpepper likes Coca-Cola and his wife prefers Dr Pepper.

Their son, Jesse Culpepper, still lives across the field.

And Saturday afternoons are spent with relatives, playing "Chicken Foot" at the dining table.

Although the pair remains largely independent, their daughter, Alma Barnes, has moved in to keep the happy couple out of trouble.

"There's never a dull moment around here," she said.

Her mission appears to be a losing battle.

With spring approaching, the couple said they already divided up lawn care duties.

"As long as we can, we're going to do our yard," Mrs. Culpepper said, peering at her mostly dormant backyard.

Her husband agreed, saying, "It costs too much to hire someone."5

Lew,

This is something you might be interested in..I found
a page reproduced of the original List No. 87, page
92, Wadeschweil, Switzerland.

I kept finding to dates for the departure of the
Theiler family from Switzerland.. on 1739 and on 1744.

When you read this page you will see how it could
have happened, But if you study this page however, you
will see the departure date is April 1739...this
Pastor Jos. Caspar Hofmeister was giving a account of
those who left his parish. This letter was written
April 10, 1744 same year 1744, as were the others
listed on the page.

They were recording names and dates of people from
their parishes who migrated before 1744. (it seems the
pastor did not like that)

I see both dates listed as departure dates online, but
I am convinced the correct one is April 1739.

Thought you might find this document helpful.
