Inventories & Appraisements Dooly Co 1838-1847, Page 3: a Montrevilla Ray was listed as one of the buyers of the estate of Orman Eubanks in 1840. Also listed as a buyer is Benjamine Culpepper. Page 2 lists James & Joel Culpepper as purchasers of the estate of William Hall in 1838.

Volume II, Page 5 is the index of the Minutes Book "A": Benjamine Sr., decd., M. Ray adm., lists numerous pages in Book "A". Jane, orphan of Benjamine Culpepper, M. Ray guardian, lists 3 pages where information is found. Benjamine Jr., o. of Benjamine Culpepper, M. Ray guard., page 157A.

The above info does indicate a definite connection to this M. Ray & Benjamin Culpepper. That's why I think that Nancy is probably the oldest daughter (named after her mother). This information is from Patricia Long, whose e-mail is: [email protected]

Sinclair administrator on the Estate of Benjamin Culpepper late of said county deceased for leave to sell all the Lands and Negroes belonging to said Estate of said deceased in terms of the statute in such cases made and provided and no objections having been filed and whereas it appearing further to this court that a proper divison of the Negroes belonging to said Estate can not be effected among and between the distributees of said Estate without a sale thereof and that a sale of the lands belonging to said Estate of the said deceased will be for the benefit of the heirs and distributees and creditors of said deceased be it therefore ordered by said Court that said administrator has leave to sell the Land and negroes belonging to said Estate of said deceased he first complying with the statute in such cases made and provided by giving notice of said sale (last two words missing from my copy.)

Obituary*10 October 1940 Mr. James Henry CULPEPPER, highly esteemed citizen of Barney died at his home there Wednesday afternoon following an illness of several weeks. News of his passing came as a shock to his many friends throughout the county who were not aware of the seriousness of his condition. Mr. Culpepper had resided in Brooks County for a number of years, moving here from Texas as a young man. He was a prominent merchant at Barney and had been Justice of the Peace for that district for many years. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was active and devoted in its work, faithfully attending services and serving in various capacities. Mr. Culpepper was married to Miss Ida Virginia HIERS, who preceded him in death several years ago. He is survived by the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Ila HARRIS, Mrs. Leland MOORE, Miss Virginia CULPEPPER, Paris CULPEPPER of Barney, and Mrs. Mary MCMILLAN of Gainesville, Florida. He is also survived by several grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two brothers, Ed CULPEPPER and Frank CULPEPPER of Texas. The passing of this prominent Brooks County citizen occasions genuine grief among many friends who esteemed him for his many fine virtues. Quiet in manner, unassuming in nature, he was endowed with those fine qualities of character which made him a truly beloved and respected person. The services were conducted by Rev. S. A. DOUTHIT who spoke of the exemplary life and offered to the family the consolation of the scriptures. Wade CLANTON, with Miss Martha SWEAT at the piano sang "Abide With Me" and "Asleep In Jesus." Active pallbearers were R. L. GRIFFIN, A. J. ENGLISH, W. B. HOLWELL, E. R. SCRUGGS, R. A. LAWSON and J. I. MOODY. Honorary pallbearers included S. S. HIERS, W. R. BLEASE, M. L. HERRING. S. L. HALL, W. R. KNIGHT, D. H. PURVIS, C. GRAHAM and H. D. JORDAN. Funeral services were held Friday at Camp Ground.8
