Mary E. Rutland

F, (19 October 1870 - 1 August 1902)
FatherHamilton Cooper Rutland (c 1844 - )
MotherLibby Ivy (c 1848 - )
Birth*19 October 1870 Mary was born at Mississippi on 19 October 1870.
Marriage*18 April 1896 She married Matthew Martin Culpepper at Simpson Co., Mississippi, on 18 April 1896 at age 25.1
Married Name18 April 1896  As of 18 April 1896, her married name was Culpepper.
(Wife) 1900 Census1 June 1900 Mary was listed as Matthew Martin Culpepper's wife on the 1900 Census at Covington Co., Mississippi.2
Death*1 August 1902 She died at Covington Co., Mississippi, on 1 August 1902 at age 31.3
Burial*say 3 August 1902 Her body was interred say 3 August 1902 at Rutland Cemetery, Covington Co., Mississippi
Probate*7 August 1902 Mary's will was probated at Covington Co., Mississippi, on 7 August 1902. H. C. Rutland, Mary's father, was both named both Administrator and guardian. Petition filed and letters granted. Inventory filed Jan 1, 1903. Attorney for est, W. H. Livingston..3
Biography* Mary Rutland Culpepper died in 1902 and Matthew remarried another woman also named Mary. However, BLM records show Mary E Culpepper, formerly Mary E. Rutland, patented 160 acres in Covington Co, June 16, 1906. And, it doesn't say, Estate of M. E. Culpepper, dec. (Addendum by Warren Culpepper: Unless the BLM records specifically identify Mary E. Culpepper as the former Mary E. Rutland (which they don't in the online version which I have access to), then the Mary E. Culpepper with the land grant is most likely #3441, the wife of Isaac Jefferson Culpepper, and not the Mary E. who married Matthew Martin Culpepper)

Matthew and Mary had a daughter, Bertha, b in 1902. This is confirmed by the probate of Mary's brother's estate in 1927. William N. Rutland had 3 heirs. Richard Rutland, Frances Rutland and a neice, Bertha Gentry. Bertha is found in 1920 living next door to Hamilton Cooper Rutland, Mary's father, and in 1930 her youngest son is named Matthew. I am thinking that she named a son after her father, after the death of H. C.3
