Ernest was listed as a student on the 1870 Census at Greensboro, Hale Co., Alabama. The census record did not make it clear which school the Culpeppers were attending. However, since they were sons of a prosperous family in nearby Wilcox County, most likely they were attending Greene Springs School, which operated from 1847 to 1884 as one of the State's academies. Called "Rugby" of the South, it prepared a number of Alabama leaders and was one of the first schools to add the study of science and government to the usual classics. (A historical marker for this school is located on Alabama Highway 60).⁵

Biography*

Ernest A. Culpepper spent his life farming the family land. He was called "Cap'n Ernest" by those who worked for him and presented an imposing figure riding over the land on a solid white horse! He was well known and respected because he treated folks right. It is said that he had such a strong, loud voice that you could hear him from a long distance. E.A. Culpepper was appointed Postmaster of Culpepper, AL on December 3, 1890 and was, in fact, the only postmaster of Culpepper.¹

Biography*

Alonzo Culpepper left behind a record, of sorts, in that he was the Census-Taker in 1880 of Lower Peach Tree, Wilcox County, AL! His beautiful handwriting and signature are forever a part of the county's history. It is sad that he died a young man while attending medical American Medical College in St. Louis.¹

Rosaline Adel Culpepper married William Monroe McGee at the Methodist Church, Hopkinsville, Kentucky. She was a nurse in the mental hospital in Hopkinsville. They had one son, Culpepper McGee, who married Bess Hopper of Nashville, TN.
This family was active in the Methodist Church. Rosaline and Monroe were very devoted and proud of their son's career with the L&N Railroad. Rosaline died nine days after her husband and the primary cause of her death was influenza contracted by her exposure to the cold when seeking help for her sick husband. She was 84 years old and the last surviving of the eight children of Erasmus and Rebecca Jane Culpepper.¹

     This weekend I had the good fortune to meet some new Culpepper cousins at a reunion in the Ozarks region of Missouri....
     After the reunion today, I drove back up to St. Louis to spend the nightbefore my flight back to Atlanta Sunday morning. I remembered that in the Places section of Culpepper Connections, I had posted info on a Culpepper's Restaurant in St. Louis. With a little time on my hands, I decided to go to Culpepper's for dinner tonight.
     I asked my waitress if she knew anything about the owners. My question was aimed at further improving our Missouri Culpepper info. She said she knew nothing other than the owners were a group of businessmen, that they had several locations in St. Louis, and the chain had been around for a long time.
     As I was eating a delicious Chicken Rueben sandwich and sipping a beer, she came back to me smiling with a framed newspaper clipping. Written in 1971, the clipping described the founding and early days of this well-known and popular St. Louis institution. But then my heart fell as I saw that the restaurant was not founded by a Culpepper, but by someone named Foy Culpepper Waldron in 1935.
     I mentioned to my waitress my disappointment, but she astutely pointed out that perhaps Foy Culpepper Waldron's mother was a Culpepper. I agreed to the possibility and started thinking about all the Missouri names I had seen in the last couple of days. But I struck out. There were no Foys and no Waldrons.
     But the food and beer were good, so I ordered another cold one and pondered this a bit further. I thought of the irony that my great-grandfather's first wife was named Susie Elizabeth Foy. But they were Georgia and Florida Culpeppers. Then, out of the blue, I recalled that one of the daughters of my great-grandfather was named Mary Foy Culpepper (born 1879) and she married Roman Simeon Waldron (in 1898). Voila! While I personally knew nothing about my Great Aunt, Mary Foy Culpepper Waldron, or her descendants, I checked our web site records tonight, and sure enough, she died in St. Louis in 1949. So the founder of Culpepper's in St. Louis (Foy Culpepper Waldron) had to have been her son, and that makes him my first cousin, once removed.
     Of course, since he's long deceased and his family is no longer involved with the restaurant, that's no big deal other than the fact that I wasn't even thinking about discovering such a close relative when I walked in. Genealogical searches can lead to interesting surprises.
     As a closing note, all of us Culpeppers can take a little pride that he chose to name the restaurant, not after his own name, but after that of his mother: a Culpepper.

P.S. If you're ever in St. Louis, I do recommend the restaurant. I thought the meal was great even before I discovered the close connection.

Then, at some unknown date between 1910 and 1920, she relocated to Atlanta with her daughters (Louise and Clara Belle) and sister (Adelle), and opened a boarding house at 704 Piedmont Avenue. Since most of White Springs burned in 1911, it is possible that the relocation occurred in the aftermath of that fire.

It is not known how long before Harry's death that they were living at this particular address, but in the period prior to his death, this residence was an old home that had been divided into several apartments. In November 2003, this beautiful home, in the heart of the McIntosh historic district, was in excellent condition.)¹¹

Obituary*

Uncle Joe Culpepper, father of J.A. and L. C. Culpepper, died at his home four miles west of Montier, with Bright's Disease at 5 o'clock P.M., Sept. 9, 1899.
Mr. Culpepper was born in Henry Co., TN in 1824. He moved to Shannon Co. in 1892 and settled on the farm where he died.
He leaves a companion and 11 children - 5 sons and 6 dau, a number of grand- and great-grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his demise. He was a kind husband, a good father, a good neighbor and was respected by all who knew him. I have known him ever since I was a small boy and he was one man that I never heard any man say aught against. If he ever had an enemy, we never knew of it. He possessed the principle that it takes to make a true man. (J. M. Overcast, Montier, Mo, Sept. 11, 1899.)⁶
