26 August 2003 | You wished to get more on Allenson Powel Sr.'s family to help determine whether the Powels and Culpeppers had connections back in NC. Here is the bit of which I'm fairly sure. I have a few Culpepper names and references to pages from eary censuses in Nash County that I'll send if you are interested. Allenson Sr. was probably born within about a year or two of 1755, as censuses possibly suggest. He was the son of John Powel. I haven't examined the source myself but have seen a citation of pages 504 through 507 of Rowan County, NC, deed book 20-24, used from 1807--1818, for gift deeds made by John Powell to: his son Ransom Powell of Rowan County, his son Alanson Powell of Nash County; his son Willie Powell of Edgecomb County; his grandson Alenson Fort of Edgecomb County; and his granddaughter Martha Fort of Edgecomb County. The Powels lived or owned property probably in both Nash and Edgecombe Counties because when Nash was formed from Edgecombe in 1777, there was the following: " . . . Edgecombe be divided by a line beginning at the cool Springs, at John Powell's on Fishing Creek, thence running to the Falls of Tar [sic] River, from thence to the Widow Rose's on Contentney; and that . . . ." I have the censuses showing Allenson Sr. in Nash County from 1790 through 1820, although the 1790 one could be for an older relative (uncle?) by the same name. There is some reason to believe that there was an older Allenson Powel because a Edgecombe County deed made in January 1766 was witnessed by an Allenson Powel. A minor would probably not have been asked to witness a deed, even if legal, if other people were available; so, this implies a birth date of around 1745 or earlier for this Allenson. This would make him 65 or over in 1810, when the age reported was under 45, and those two ages should be fairly easy to distinguish between. As shown, the censuses show wildly varying ages for the oldest male in the family and have some minor inconsistency for the oldest female. I concluded that it is likely an older male (relative?) lived with them in 1800 and 1790, if it is our Allenson as head of household. The children's ages are fairly consistent and show that one of the oldest daughters (Tempy?) was married or left between 1800 and 1810. Allenson's family was in Henry County, TN, by 1827 because Allenson Sr. and Allenson Jr. are both on the tax list, with the elder paying on 150 acres of land and the younger paying only for one poll, implying that he had reached voting age. Allenson Sr., who apparently died about 1830, gave away some of his property to his children and grandchildren before his death. He apparently had at least eight daughters and one or possibly two sons. Not counting the 1790 census, there should have been three daughters born 1790 to 1800 and five born 1800 to 1810. From the Henry County, TN, records, I can account for Tempy, born 1789/1790, per 1860 census, (gift to daughter Tempy Culpepper, p. 343, Deed Book C, October 1828--August 1831); an unnamed daughter who apparently died by 1828 (gift to grandaughter Martha Ann Mariah Marshll, p. 1, Deed Book C, and also on minutes of court, 4 March 1828, p. 526); Nancy, born between 1790 and 1800, died 1840-1850 (deed to daughter Nancy Etheridge, p. 343, Deed Book C); Rocinda, born 1792/1793, died after 1850 (deed to daughter Rocinda Ellenor, p. 79, Deed Book C); Eliza, born 1803/1804 died after 1855 (deed to daughter Eliza Cole, p. 2, Deed Book C, and also court minutes 4 March 1828, p. 526); and Allenson Jr., born 1804/1805, died after 1880 (deed to son Allanson, Jr., p. 16, Deed Book C). I have been told, but have not verified, that Allenson Sr.'s children included Rebecca, born Nov 1809, died March 1882 in Johnson County, TX. I am uncertain whether Marshall is the husband of Allenson's daughter or his granddaughter Martha Ann Mariah, and I haven't found any Marshalls in Henry County in 1830 or 1840. My limited research hasn't revealed Nancy's husband, who died between 1825 and 1830, but she had a daughter Temperance, who married a Parker, and three sons, including Lewis. Rocinda married Ethelbert Ellenor, who died between 1830 and 1840, and they had at least two sons, William F. and John W. Eliza married Joseph Cole, who lived beyond 1880, and they had Joshua, Alison, Wiley, Nancy, James, Washington, Temperance, Celista, Joseph, and possibly Elvira. In 1830, Allenson Sr. doesn't appear on the census, but Allenson, Jr. has himself, one female 10-15 (wife Margaret?) and one female under 5. There is an Elizabeth Powel with a male 50-60 listed next to Allenson Jr., but she and the male were too young to be his Junior's parents unless someone mis-stated ages. By 1836, Junior had inherited his father's land because he is shown on the tax list with 150 acres. They were still in Henry County in 1840 with one male 5-10, one female 5-10, and two females under 5. Some of their older children, including the son, apparently died because the 1850 census in Benton County shows the oldest children as Mexico, 16, and two other daughters 10-15. Allenson Jr.'s and Margaret's children included (maybe more) Mexico, born about 1833; Louisa Mariah (nicknamed Eva or E), born some time between 1832 and 1836; Mary, born 1837/1838; Malvina, born 1841/1842; Martha Emily, born 1843/1844; Rebecca Ann, born 11 May 1846; James, born 1848/1849; Margaret Temperance, born 1850/1851; Nancy A. (probably Arbell, since she was also known as Nancy Bell), born 1 April 1856; and Mollie C.,born 20 July 1865. Mexico married Isaac Dortch 20 July 1854, per Benton County, TN, records. Louisa Mariah married John Stephen Matlock (also listed as Medlock) 31 December 1854, in Henry County. A Mary Powel married John Birdwell 25 June 1858 in Benton County, and, on the 1880 census, Allenson's daughter Mary was a widow named Trigg. I am told that her daughters Margaret and Susan were Birdwells, although they were listed as Triggs on the 1880 census. Mary lived until at least 1920, when she was living with her daughter Margaret Caplinger, also a widow, in Howell County, MO. Malvina Elvira probably married A. H. Beaton as Elvira 7 February 1860 in Benton County. Martha Emily reportedly married Christian Gardner 28 August 1864, but I haven't confirmed this. Rebecca Ann married Jacob Wyninger 20 August 1882 in Henry County. My research doesn't show a marriage for James. Margaret married Thomas Jefferson Matlock or Medlock 8 June 1864, and I don't have recorded here whether Benton or Henry County, although they lived in Henry County. Thomas Jefferson and John Stephen were probably related, and one was known as Tobe, but I don't know which. Nancy, my great grandmother, married three times and was widowed three times. First, she married Alonzo Marberry 28 September 1871 in Henry County; then, she married Alexander Dortch 1 December 1878 in Henry County; finally, she married Joshua Bradshaw 26 June 1879 in Henry County. The Marberrys have roots in Benton County and Henry County, and I believe that Alexander Dortch was brother to another of our family Dortches, Henry Clay Dortch. On 13 February 1887, Mollie married William Wyninger, who was her sister Rebecca's stepson, although Mollie and William were the same age. Although she had an older sister named Mary, Mollie sometimes also went by the name Mary, possibly because people assumed that Mollie was a nickname for Mary. Either Mollie or Rebecca was known as Pink, but I don't know which.4
EMail* | 31 January 2005 | You and I have corresponded about Margarett (probably Culpepper), who married Allenson Powel, Jr. I didn't realize at the time, but I have another piece of information that may support Allenson's wife Margaett's being Baalam's daughter. This is a picture postcard sent to my grandmother Lula Dell Bradshaw, granddaughter of Allenson Jr. and Margarett, by James Caplinger, Siloam Springs, MO, when they were both youngsters in the early 1910s. Lula Dell's address was Buchanan, TN. The ties of Lula Dell and James through the Culpeppers is not certain, however, because there is another connection. . Per the 1920 census (Howell Co., MO, ED 97, p. 89a), James W. Caplinger, 30, born MO, parents born TN, lived there, as did his brother Irving D., 37, born TN. One of their grandmothers appears to have been Susan Culpepper, another daughter of Baalam Culpepper. However, another tie between James and Lula Dell is that James's mother was Margaret Trigg (or Birdwell), daughter of Mary Powel, who was a sister of Allenson Jr. Mary Powel was apparently married to both a Trigg and a Birdwell, both of whom died young. Margaret Caplinger and her mother Mary Trigg also lived in Howell County in 1920. My mother always hinted at a relationship to the Culpeppers by saying that her grandmother and her aunt claimed kin with them; however, she would never really discuss it because there was a Culpepper man in the neighborhood whom she hated, possibly a singular occurence. It would probably have pleased her to know I've found that he probably belonged to a different branch.4 |

Biography* | The following is from Tadford Culpepper descendant Tommie Culpepper (source: Carolyn Jenkins and her daughter Libby Stalter): "There were five children born to this union: Mattie, the oldest and her husband Uhlman, had five children; but not much is known of them; Tommie was just little when his Aunt Mattie died. We think both she and her husband are buried in S. Pleasant Grove, but could find no stone. I have not been able to locate their children or grandchildren; I am still trying. Of course I mentioned Aunt Angle, Pappy's second oldest sister, married his Uncle Fate; Mammie's oldest brother; consequently there are double cousins here. I did mention about their children; evidently Tommie's brothers were good friends with the Evans boys and their sister Jewel. The other two Aunt Callie and her husband Tom Petty, had six children; I really didn't get to know their children; but Aunt Callie lived across the street from where Pappy and Mamie lived when we moved to Kentucky. Here children had moved away; some to Paducah, KY. and one to Detroit, Michigan. Her husband had died several years earlier. Uncle Perry, the youngest child, married Aunt Zora, they were busy farmers and hard workers. There really wasn't much visiting between families in the early days; everyone was busy trying to make a living. I did get to know their two boys, J. L. & Palmer; they also were good tobacco farmers and hard workers. J. L. just died a few months ago. They lived and farmed close to where their father Uncle Perry lived." Tommie remembers Julia (his grandmother). Tommie's family moved in with her for almost a year after his grandfather (Tadford) died. Tommie always says he remembers his Aunt from St. Louis, he doesn't remember her name, would come and visit them and roll her hair up on rags. Joe Hutson was a cousin of Joe Ben, Tommie's Dad. He raised his daughter Mittie after his wife died. She married Hiyt Roberts' brother. Tommie's father got $40.00 out of his father's estate. A lot of money at that time. |

Williams. From Libby Stalter: "Joey was a wealthy dentist and prodded the family to move to Missouri. The whole family moved except the two oldest children. ... they took 13 wagon trains." The moved was said to have been in 1892. "While clearing land in Missouri, Joey was dynamiting stumps to clear them. He was killed while dynamiting. The tree, however, remains, and pictures of it exist."
