Essie Culpepper

F, (21 November 1911 - 15 April 1993)
FatherArthur L. Culpepper (Sep 1870 - 12 Sep 1955)
MotherLula Neal Spivey (20 May 1873 - 11 Jul 1943)
Birth*21 November 1911 Essie was born at Norfolk Co., Virginia, on 21 November 1911.1
(Daughter) 1920 Census1 January 1920 Essie and Mary was listed as a daughter in Arthur L. Culpepper's household on the 1920 Census at Monroe Ward, Norfolk Co., Virginia.2
(Daughter) 1930 Census1 April 1930 Essie and Mary was listed as a daughter in Arthur L. Culpepper's household on the 1930 Census at Westhaven, Western Branch District, Norfolk Co., Virginia.3
Married Namecirca 1934  As of circa 1934, her married name was Calderazzi.4
Marriage*circa 1934 She married (?) Calderazzi circa 1934.4,5
(Daughter) 1940 Census1 April 1940 Essie was listed as a daughter in Arthur L. Culpepper's household on the 1940 Census at Western Branch District, Norfolk Co., Virginia.5
Death*15 April 1993 She died at Portsmouth (city), Virginia, on 15 April 1993 at age 81.1
Obituary*16 April 1993 Essie Culpepper Johnson, 81, of the 1000 block of City Park Ave. died April 15, 1993, in her home. Mrs. Johnson, a native of Norfolk County, was a retired head cashier from the Sears Roebuck Portsmouth store. She was a Catholic. Survivors include four daughters, Shirley N. Hartman, Patricia A. Cox and Mary L. Lawrence, all of Portsmouth, and Leslie D. Pleasants of Chesapeake; two sisters, Ethel Davis of Mathews County and Mary Edens of Toccoa, Ga; a brother Joseph Culpepper of Portsmouth; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Foster Funeral Home by the Rev. Albert Pereira. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. Friends may join the family from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and other times at 3404 Anita Circle, Miars Farm, Chesapeake.6
Research note*January 2003 Dorothy Harcum, in a Jan 2003 e-mail message to Pat Roberts, wrote: "Also went to Olive Branch Cemetery office to find out who was buried near Essie C Johnson (hoping her Calderazzi or Johnson husbands were with her). Much to my surprise, she was married a 3rd time to a Bridges (as evidenced by her father's obit). In Olive Branch's records, Essie C Bridgers bought the North half of lot 226, Mrs Lois F Morse bought the South half. I don't know who Lois F Morse was/is. The only person buried in Lois' half is Alfred M Morse who was buried 8-21-1957. But in the north half that Essie bought is where she was buried on 4-17-1993 along with Leslie D Brid 1-5-58. One space is open and one space is reserved for Shirley Neal Hartman... In Essie's obit, one of her daughters was Shirley N Hartman. As of 1-22-2003, it is obvious that Shirley is still living (or someone forgot that she had a space reserved in Olive Branch) and that Shirley's middle name was Neal. Neal was the middle name of her maternal grandmotherLula Neal Spivey Culpepper. And it is possible that the children mentioned in Essie's obit were Bridges(ers) children!
