Although the family originally stopped at Moody, TX, they moved to Jud in Haskell County, TX, where William Ray was a tenant farmer on the J. F. Jones farm from 1906 to 1944. The town, near Rule, TX, no longer exists. William was a member of the school board and the Methodist Church. When William Ray retired from farming, he and Ruby moved to Rochester, TX. |

Mrs. West died Monday at 2:45 p.m. in Haskell Memorial Hospital after a month-long illness. The Clay County, Ala., native married A.F. West June 30, 1901 in Eagle Springs. He died May 24, 1964. Mrs. West was a member of the First United Methodist Church here. Survivors include four sons. A.Y., of Carlsbad, N.M., C.W., of Rochester, and Sam F., and Pete, both of Lubbock; two daughters, Mrs. L.A. Todd of Wichita Falls and Mrs. Bill Anderson of Brownfield; a sister, Mrs. Florence Burk of Seymour; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and eight great-great- grandchildren. |

On p. 75, Mrs. West wrote that Ardie moved with his family from Mississippi to Texas around 1897. In 1901, he married Dora Ray and in 1906, they and their two young sons, Alpha Young West and Sam West, settled down to farm in Haskell County. In 1912, Ardie rented the J. L. Jones farm near Jud where the family continued to live until 1935. There, Ardie was a member of the school board and the Board of Stewards of the Methodist Church. From 1935 until 1950, Ardie and his family lived on a farm near Rule which was owned by their son, Sam. Ardie was a member of the Rule Masonic Lodge. He also played the banjo. |

Biography* | | The following is from p. 291 of Mrs. Nan Overton West's book The Wests and The Rays and Allied Lines Clarence, who was called "Gay," ... played professional baseball for Gulf Oil Company in the Oil Belt League and the West Texas League. During the depression years of the 1930's, Gay worked as a pumper in the oilfields near Throckmorton, TX. In 1939 he was badly burned in an accident at a well and spent over a year in hospitals in Lubbock and Odessa. His treatment required 223 pieces of grafted skin. He later worked for Gulf Oil in Odessa, TX. During World War II he worked at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX, and at the Alamogordo, NM, Air Base. From 1945 to 1968 he and his family lived in Missouri, where he and Alma both worked at Boeing Aircraft Co. While living at Belle Plaine, he was with the Police Department and was the first person to arrive at the scene of a tornado at Udall, KS. His assistance to storm victims was recognized in an article about the tornado, later published in Reader's Digest Magazine. After retirement, he lived in Rule, TX, for ten years until his death 4 Jan 1978. |
