Biography* | | Louis Jefferson Dean was the son of Joseph John Francis and Mary Bathsheba (Culpepper) Dean. His parents were noted in the 1850 census in Randolph Co., AL and this is where Louis Jefferson Dean is presumed to have been born. He was noted living with his parents in 1860 census records of the Wesobulga P. O. District, Randolph Co., AL. This was probably near Wesobulga Creek which appears to be northwest of Wadley, AL on what is now the border between Clay and Randolph Co., AL although it would have been in Randolph Co., AL in 1860. A 17 year old "Louis J. Dean" was noted as a farm laborer living with his parents in the 1870 census of Louina P. O. District, Randolph Co., AL. Louis Jefferson Dean's father is next noted in 1873 in Wesobulga Masonic records so the family apparently remained in the area near what is now the border between Clay and Randolph Co., AL until at least then.
Based on the 1900 census records, Louis married Mary Frances White in the mid-1870's. The couple is noted with their young family in Almond, Clay Co., AL in the 1880 census. Unfortunately, the only Almond, AL which has been found, is to the west of Wadley near the Clay Co., AL border but on the Randolph Co., AL side of the line. Also unfortunately, the 1890 census records burned and so it can only be noted that sometime after the 1880 census, the family moved to the Sand Mountain area of Jackson Co., AL to an area just across the county line from Henegar, DeKalb Co., AL. The community became known as Dean's Chapel and was apparently near the little town of Dutton, Jackson Co., AL since Louis Jefferson and his family were noted living in Dutton Beat in Jackson Co., AL in the 1900 census.
Wayne Dean wrote:1
Dean's Chapel, founded and built by my grandfather, Louis Jefferson Dean, when he took his family from Randolph County and settled in Jackson County, is still in use. It is approximately five miles south-west of the De Kalb County line. Everyone in that area knows its location. The cemetery is a few hundred yards from the church, about half way to my father's old home. The original log house was replaced a few years ago and one of my cousins still lives on the farm.... By the way, there is an older cemetery, a couple of miles from Dean's Chapel, where some of our ancestors are buried but most of the markers are eroded beyond recognition. It is just across the line in De Kalb County.
Louis Jefferson Dean died in 1922 at the age of 69. |

Biography* | | William Fletcher Dean was the son of Joseph John Francis and Mary Bathsheba (Culpepper) Dean. His parents were noted in the 1850 census in Randolph Co., AL and this is where Fletcher is presumed to have been born. A 12 year old "Wm. F. Dean" was noted with his parents in the 1870 census of Louina P. O. District (now Wadley), Randolph Co., AL.
It might have been around this time that an incident happened which Fletcher recounted to his granddaughter, Mrs. Ted (Estelle German) Canter. Fletcher Dean's mother told him to pick blackberries for a pie and he refused because he thought that he already had more than he could do for the day and his mother proceeded to throw a butcher knife at him which cut a gash in his head.3 This incident obviously made a lasting impression on him. Fletcher Dean's father is next noted in 1873 in Wesobulga Masonic records so the family apparently remained in the area near what is now the border between Clay and Randolph Co., AL until at least then.
In 1875, Fletcher Dean married Martha Tate. They homesteaded 150 acres on London mountain near Chandler Springs.4 London Mountain is in the Talladega National Forest in an area which was originally in Talladega Co., AL but which is now on the Clay Co., AL side of the Talladega/Clay county line. It is due west of Lineville, AL and appears to be halfway between Ashland in Clay County and Waldo in Talladega Co., AL.
After the log house that the family lived in was destroyed by fire around 1920, Fletcher sold the land to his sons, John and Leslie, and did sharecropping in Barfield and Saks, and then he moved his family to the Friendship community and worked on the Mellon farm in Oxford, AL.4 Barfield is northeast of Lineville in Clay Co., AL. Saks is near Fort McClellan in the vicinity of Anniston in Calhoun Co., AL. Oxford is southeast of Anniston in Calhoun Co., AL and Friendship is in the Talladega National Forest near Oxford.
In addition to farming, Fletcher Dean canned and sold vegetables in nearby cities.4 He was a religious man who always carried his Bible.4 In the mid-1930's, Fletcher Dean and his wife, Martha, broke up housekeeping and went to live with their children.4
In 1937, he lost his wife of 61 years. William Fletcher Dean died in 1940 at the age of 84. |

Biography* | | Elias Washington Dean was the son of Joseph John Francis and Mary Bathsheba (Culpepper) Dean. His parents were noted in the 1870 census of Louina P. O. District (now Wadley), Randolph Co., AL so this is where Wash is presumed to have been born. His father is next noted in 1873 in Wesobulga Masonic records so the family apparently remained in the area near what is now the border between Clay and Randolph Co., AL until at least then. Wash's parents then moved to the Sand Mountain area near the border between Jackson and DeKalb Co., AL. The area where they settled became known as Dean's Chapel community which is in Jackson Co., AL across the county line from Sylvania and Henegar which are in DeKalb Co., AL.
Based on the 1900 census record, Wash apparently married Mattie Beulah Payne Allen around 1893 or 1894 and they settled down to raise their family. Around 1911, they moved their family to southern Georgia and eventually settled down in Baxley, Appling Co., GA.1 This is where Wash died in 1940 at the age of 70. |

I don't know Uncle Wash because he died when I was only two years old, but Aunt Mat was always a favorite of mine. She would visit my Grandmother (Sophronia Allen) Dean just about every summer. She knew lots of jokes and was a lot of fun--and she made the best taffy candy you ever ate. She died a year after my Grandmother.
Mat's favorite expression was "Bless Pattie."2 She was living with her daughter, Thelma, at the time of her death. |
