Biography* | 21 October 1957 | The following is excerpted from Part II of a ledger left by Josie Mary Culpepper Wilson Burger for her children, October 21, 1957: My father was born February 16, 1850. George Luther Culpepper. His mother's name was Mary. He can't remember his father, as they separated when he was about 4 or 5 years old. He lived with his mother and her mother until they both died. They were both gone by the time he was 18. He was born in Columbus, Georgia. After his mother's death, he drifted here and there and finally ended up on a round up of cattle and drifted into Texas, working cattle. He met my mother Mary Elizabeth Blackman, close to Dallas where she had lived most of her life. They married and to that union were born 10 children, of which I am the youngest. The names of my brothers and sisters: 1. Jimmie Nathanial Culpepper 2. Walter, died when 7 months old. 3. Charlie Humphrey 4. Emma Culpepper Holveck 5. Mattie Culpepper Owens 6. Dora Culpepper Childress 7. Minnie Lou Culpepper (Tucker) (Thompson) Baker 8. Georgia Bell Culpepper Quinn 9. Alva Jarrel Culpepper 10. Josie Mary Culpepper (Wilson) Burger (Mama had several nieces and nephews older than she. I stayed confused for several years.) All that I know about my fathers people are that he was a decedent [sic] of Lord Culpepper that landed in Va. Culpepper, Virginia is named after him. If my father ever had any brothers and sisters they were half brother and sister as his mother never married again and they lost track of his father and never knew if he married again. He has some cousins around Goose Creek that own a furniture store. Willie Culpepper was a had shell Baptist preacher and was my father's 3rd cousin. He had a cousin, Ace Williams, whom I never knew but heard him talk about. My father was a young boy during the civil war. He could tell some interesting things about the civil war and all down the years of settling this country. He could neither read or write but no one could beat him at figuring. He could count in his head as fast as you could on pencil and paper and come up with the right answer. He never had much money but feed and raised 9 children of his own, one that wasn't his (an orphan) and 7 grand children. He died at the age of 82 with 4 dollars in his pocket and owing no man. His hobby was fishing and he spent the last 7 years of his life (after Mama died) catching the biggest fish in the Colorado river at Wharton. He wasn't ever sick, if he ever had a head ache he never said so. He was as spry as any young man. Strokes killed him. He had three strokes but none of them crippled him. He was on the river fishing when he had his last stroke. That was on February 28, 1932 and he died March 19, 1932. His request had always been to be buried in a home made coffin. An old man named Null lived next door had promised him that he would build his coffin, so he did. He wore a long white beard and he always had a mustache as long as I can remember. He was six foot 2 inches and wore a 34-36 trousers. Rudolph, Sr. made the remark once that Grandpa Culpepper was the banana man mentioned in one of Horton Foote's novels. He would buy the bananas and then sell them on the street. Grandpa and Grandma Culpepper are buried in the City Cemetery in Wharton, TX. |

Research note* | 2006 | From Lew Griffin: I think George Luther Culpepper was the ten year old George Culpepper, found living in the household of Elizabeth Rowell, age 61, in the 1860 census of Muscogee County, GA. I presume this was his grandmother Rowell. Also in the household was a younger Elizabeth Rowell, age 25, and I assume this was George's mother, who had resumed using her maiden name. And there was Humphrey P. Rowell, age 21. If someone wants to look this up, this is family #688, on page 388 of the 1860 Muscogee County, GA census. All of these individuals were born in Georgia. In 1850, Richard and Seaborn Rowell were in Muscogee County, and perhaps one of these was the husband of the elder Elizabeth Rowell. The 1850 census records for Muscogee should be checked. Note that this agrees with Josie's 1957 account, in which she states that George's father left the family when George was four (around 1854), and that George and his mother lived with his grandmother. However, the mother's name appears to have been Elizabeth rather than Mary, so that is a discrepancy with Josie's account. Note that an Elizabeth Rowell married Jeremiah Culpepper, 20 May 1849, in Muscogee County, GA. This Jeremiah was probably the one who later married Mary Jane O'Ferrell, 30 May 1860, in Butler Co., AL. This couple (Jeremiah and Elizabeth) was in the 1850 Muscogee census with a five month old son, Daniel. I'm going to go out on a limb, a bit, and suggesting that Daniel was actually none other than George L. The birth date, early in 1850, is exactly right. I'm guessing for one reason or another, his name was changed to George L. sometime before 1860, and probably when he was four, after his father left. So it seems likely to me that George L. Culpepper was the son of Jeremiah Culpepper and (Mary?) Elizabeth Rowell, daughter of ? and Elizabeth Rowell. Note that George's son Jim named a son Rowell Culpepper. Further research on the Rowells in Muscogee County might help prove this connection. For instance, George L. may have been mentioned in his grandfather or grandmother Rowell's will or estate records. From Warren Culpepper: DNA testing has proved that George Luther Culpepper is a descendant of James Culpepper of Nash Co., NC (1728-1799). This is consistent with George being a son of Jeremiah, but does not prove it.14,15 |

Death* | 3 February 1959 | He died at Tallapoosa Co., Alabama, on 3 February 1959 at age 74.2 |
Research note* | 21 December 2010 | Shannon Barron Lake wrote Warren Culpepper: "The wife of James J. Howard was Epsey Dallas Thompson, the daughter of Jonathan and Isophina/Icyreny Thompson. This Epsey married first James M. Knowles 16 Oct 1861, second Franklin Knowles 24 Sep 1863 and last James J. Howard on 09 Oct 1870. Her first two marriages were in Chambers Co., AL and the last in Tallapoosa Co., AL. She wound up outliving all three husbands. She only gave birth to one son, James 'Jimmy' Knowles, by her first husband. There must have been complications with that first birth because she never had any more. This combined with the fact that James Howard didn't have any children prior to their marriage could be part of the reason that James adopted Lonnie. "One of the pieces of the puzzle I am trying to find is the family connection of James J. and Epsey Thompson Howard to Irvin and Joana Baker Culpepper. I have a cousin, Mike Howard, a direct descendant of Lonnie, who has been looking for the family connection or reason for the adoption for 20+ years. He had been looking for a family connection between the Culpeppers and either the Howard or Thompson families. However, I think it may be through the Bakers. Phillip Baker was a favorite family member of my great grandmother, Mary Pearl HARRELSON Barron. She told me the family connections but I was too young to be able to remember now. Mary Pearl is one of the many people that Lew and I have in common. Since Lew Griffin also has a connection to the Culpeppers but NOT the Howard or Keel lines then that makes me think that the connection may be through the Bakers. However, it could be through the Thompsons. The brick wall in the Thompson line is with Epsey's parents, Jonathan 'John' A. and Isophina/Icyreney (maiden name unknown) Thompson. So we don't know anything about their siblings or parents. "If you have any clue what became of Irvin or the Culpepper connection to the Thompson, Howard or Baker families please let me know."1 |
