Elizabeth Dempsey wrote of Edna in a letter 28 Feb 1979: Mother is the only one of the eight children living. She is 88 and is very mentally alert. She cannot walk because of arthritis but is otherwise well physically.
3 Apr 1979, Mary Lillian Butler Pierce wrote that she and her sister-in-law "went to Ashland Nursing Home and visited Edna Dempsey. She was thrilled to death. ...her mind is sharp as a pin, slightly hard of hearing, a beautiful woman for her age."
