Biography* | | According to Mary Lillian Butler Pierce, 16 Apr 1979, Dovie "burned to death from a fire around a wash pot." In a 10 Feb 1994 letter Mary Lillian added that Dovie had two small children when she died. Mrs. J. E. (Ann White) Hicks wrote to Mary Lillian 8 Dec 1993: I found a letter to Grandmother Culpepper [Mrs. F. M. (Willie Gains) Culpepper] from "Addie" [Mrs. P. H. (Addie Johnson) Ford]. In it she writes of "Doves" (I think) getting severely burned from fuel oil used to start a fire around a wash pot. She rolled on the ground to put out fire and walked 1/2 mile to get help & died the next day. This letter was dated 1954.... She [Addie] called Grandmother "Aunt Willie." |
