Biography* | | The following is a 1951 article from an unknown source: WIDOW OF 1919 CHIEF Top Cattlewoman Arrives in Town By ROY RODDY The widow of the man who presided thirty-two years ago at the last Texas cattlemen's convention held in Dallas arrived at the Baker Hotel for the 1951 edition. She was Mrs. W. W. Turney of El Paso, the top cattlewoman of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and Dallas' No. 1 guest at the 3-day meeting this week. "My husband was president of the association the last time it met in Dallas, in 1919," she said. "That was a long time ago. I don't remember too much. But everyone was perfectly lovely and charming in every way." An elderly woman with greenish hazel eyes, Mrs. Turney is gracious, alert and merry. She has lived much of the history of the cattlemen's West. "My father was S. R. Guthrie of Murphysville in Brewster County--a town that later become Alpine. He had the 101 brand," she said. "He was a friend of George Miller and, later, of the Miller Brothers. They used my father's brand to form the 101 Rodeo." She said she retained the 101 Ranch and was active in the association until late in 1949, when she sold out to Massie West of San Angelo and Ozona. Her husband, who died in March 1939, was an El Paso attorney and cattleman. He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1892. After serving in the House four years, Turney spent six years in the Senate. "His presidency during the 1919 Dallas convention was the second one he'd had in the association. But I can't recall what year his first presidency was," she said. "But I have very delightful recollections of the 1919 convention. I remember the annual ball was in a huge room where the columns were entwined with American Beauty roses." She pointed to the vivid red roses on her coffee table--a gift of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce. "Everyone has done so much, I'm overcome with kindness." Actually, John W. Carpenter, head of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce, had tried to send a special car to El Paso to bring Mrs. Turney to Dallas for the convention. "But I had business in Marfa and San Antonio," she explained. "So we just drove over." Sunday saw a steady stream of incoming cattlemen registering into downtown hotels. The chamber of commerce's hotel committee reported that registrations Monday probably would be equally heavy. The convention's public program will open Tuesday and continue through Wednesday. Monday's program will consist of committee meetings and a director's meeting at 2 p.m. in Hotel Adolphus, Ray W. Willoughby of San Angelo, association head, said. Iva and William had no children. The following is from p. 52 of The Homes of El Paso 15.__1205 Montana. Built for W. W. Turney in 1909, James T. Hewitt and H. T. Ponsford were the contractors. Two story, Greek Revival, with two story columns with Corinthian capitals; Captain's Walk on roof; typical Greek dentils on architrave frieze; Brick construction with side porticos, one flat and one semicircular. This house was the scene of many civic and social events while Mrs. and Mrs. Turney lived here. It serve as headquarters for Bundles for Britain during World War II. It has been converted to serve as the El Paso Museum of Art. The front was glassed in and the side porticos removed and large wings added to house the Kress Collection in one wing and the other is used for travelling shows of paintings. |
