Biography* | | John Frank Dean was the son of Louis Jefferson and Mary Frances (White) Dean. He was first noted as a three year old living with his parents in the 1880 census of Beat 11, Almond, Clay Co., AL. The only Almond, AL which has been found, is to the west of Wadley near the Clay Co., AL border but on the Randolph Co., AL side of the line. Since Clay Co., AL took the western part of Randolph Co., AL when it was formed on 7 Dec 1866, it seems likely that John Frank grew up in the border area between Clay and Randolph Co., AL. The 1890 census records burned so it is difficult to know at what point the family moved to the Sand Mountain area of Jackson Co., AL just across the county line from Henegar, DeKalb Co., AL to the community which became known as Dean's Chapel.
The family apparently settled near the little town of Dutton, Jackson Co., AL since that is where John Frank was noted with his parents in 1900 census records. Not long after this, John Frank married Anna Adams and they settled down to raise a family. John Frank remarried, presumably after the loss of his first wife, and his second wife outlived him. John Frank died in 1956 at the age of 79. |

Biography* | | Martin Luther Dean was the son of Louis Jefferson and Mary Frances (White) Dean. He was first noted as a one year old living with his parents in the 1880 census of Beat 11, Almond, Clay Co., AL. He probably spent his early childhood west of Wadley near the Clay Co., Randolph Co., AL border. The 1890 census records burned so it is difficult to know at what point the family moved to the Sand Mountain area of Jackson Co., AL just across the county line from Henegar, DeKalb Co., AL to the community which became known as Dean's Chapel.
Martin L. Dean appears to have been listed twice in the 1900 census, with a birth date of Jan 1881 in Jackson Co., AL and as a boarder with a birth date of Jan 1879 in the household of William A. Culpepper, in Randolph Co., AL.
Martin married Mary Browder and they settled down to raise their family in Jackson Co., AL. Martin is said to have moved his family to Texas or Oklahoma. Several of his sons served in World War II. Martin Luther Dean died in 1954 at the age of 75. |
