Biography* | | Henry Freeman Kirk was the son of John Wesley and Florela Caroline (Culpepper) Kirk. He was born and raised on his father's farm at Flatrock, near Almond to the west of Louina in Randolph Co., AL. According to L. Hoyt Kirk,1 the farm was on what is known locally as Cotton Ridge about four miles west of what is now the town of Wadley, AL. Henry was noted there with his parents in 1900 census records.
In 1904, Henry married Nancy Jones and they settled down to farm and raise a family and were noted in the 1910 Randolph Co., AL census records. A son, L. Hoyt Kirk, wrote about his memories of the farm:1
We lived between Wadley and Malone. Malone is no longer on the map [there is a town, Malone, which shows up on highway maps to the northwest of Wadley], but back then there was a post office and three stores, churches, and several homes in and around Malone, a depot on the railroad. The last time I was there, trees were growing between the brick walls of what used to be a large two story house with stores and the post office on the ground floor.
In 1923, Henry moved his family to Boaz in Marshall Co., AL. Hoyt Kirk wrote: 2
You spoke of Mount Vernon, we lived out off of the Mount Vernon Road. Take a right off of Mount Vernon or come down the old Boaz Highway toward Albertville less than a mile. Take the left and cross the railroad track and take a left. I plowed the fields along the side of the railroad track just before you cross what we called Slab Creek.
Henry eventually moved his family to Sand Mountain, near Henagar, in Jackson Co., AL. because it was a better farming area.3 Henry died in 1969 at the age of 86. |

Biography* | | Ulus Parker Kirk was the son of John Wesley and Florela Caroline (Culpepper) Kirk. "Ulus" (also spelled "Eulas" on the marriage record) was probably a nickname for Ulysses. He was born and raised on his father's farm at Flatrock, near Almond to the west of Louina in Randolph Co., AL. According to a nephew, L. Hoyt Kirk,1 the farm was on what is known locally as Cotton Ridge about four miles west of what is now the town of Wadley, AL. Ulus was noted there with his parents in 1900 census records.
In 1909, Ulus married Margaret Harper and Ulus and Margaret were noted in the 1910 Randolph Co., AL census records. According to Hoyt Kirk,1 Ulus moved to Ashland, AL about 1924. Hoyt added:
There is a funny incident about his leaving the farm. He was living on a farm which my grandfather owned and after harvesting what little crop he made he told my grandfather that he was leaving the farm. My grandfather asked him what he was going to do, and Ulus said, "I am going to move up to Ashland and put up a cafe." My grandfather said "Now, by grassis, you are going to move up and go just broke as a hain."2 And Ulus said "Papa, what in hell have I got to go broke on?"
Ulus did move to Ashland and went into the cafe business next to his brother Dan's meat market. After a few years Ulus went to work with Dixie Constructing putting up electric power lines in Mississippi and later he constructed electric power lines in the north Alabama area for T.V.A.3 and wound up with the Cullman Power Board in Cullman where he worked about 35 years until his retirement.
Ulus died in 1962 at the age of 71. |
